The L Word -- Showtime

http://www.sho.com/site/lword/about.do

The SHOWTIME Original Series, THE L WORD, is about a group of young women in Los Angeles, their lives, careers, and romantic relationships - both gay and straight.

Jenny Schecter (MIA KIRSHNER) is a gifted young writer of fiction who has just graduated from college and arrives in Los Angeles to begin her "adult life" with her boyfriend - soon to be fiancé - Tim Haspel (ERIC MABIUS). Tim and Jenny reside in West Hollywood, next door to Bette Porter (JENNIFER BEALS) and her partner Tina Kennard (LAUREL HOLLOMAN). Bette and Tina have been a couple for seven years and are trying to find the perfect sperm donor to help them start a family as they struggle with their relationship. Bette's and Tina's close network of friends includes Shane McCutcheon (KATHERINE MOENNIG), who is the resident heartthrob; Dana Fairbanks (ERIN DANIELS), a professional tennis player not yet out of the closet; bisexual journalist Alice Pieszecki (LEISHA HAILEY); and Bette's half-sister Kit Porter (PAM GRIER), who is a musician and a recovering alcoholic. In the two-hour pilot, Jenny's plans for her future are shaken when Marina (KARINA LOMBARD), a beautiful and compelling woman who owns a West Hollywood café, makes a pass at her at a party hosted by Bette and Tina. Amid denial and confusion, Jenny starts to question her sexual orientation and her love for Tim. Her attraction to Marina is powerful and ultimately irresistible. Meanwhile, Bette and Tina, stunned at how difficult it is to find a suitable sperm donor, attempt to seduce a handsome, young artist on the night that Tina is about to ovulate. The seduction attempt fails, but the encounter does serve to rekindle, at least momentarily, Bette's and Tina's passion for each other.

 How come nobody has posted about this? ;)

I'm sure we've talked about this before, back when it was announced. I know I'm anxiously awaiting its premiere.

I've already added it to my glut of Sunday night shows to Tivo.

Giantrobo 01-12-04 09:40 PM

I'm sure it's a great dramatic show...however, based on the trailer I must say...

Wow!

The thought of Karina Lombard and Mia Kirshner gettin' it on together makes me want to subscribe to Showtime.

I'm pitching a tent just thinking about it.

Jadzia 01-12-04 11:48 PM

I guess this show will get a lot more straight male viewers for Showtime than Queer As Folk.

I wanna see Pam Grier's juggs!!
They were beautiful back in the 1970's.

I just hope they F*** each other as much as the boys from 'Queer".

It seemed to me 'Queer' was a gay porno with dramatic breaks in between the Suckin' and F****n'.

So did anybody see this tonight?

It has some women in it that I really enjoy in their other work.

Feedback people. :)

I saw it. I really wasn't drawn in by the character's or the writing. It went on too long. I can't put my finger on it, but I just was not engaged. I just kept on waiting for it to end. The "cool, wife-beater wearing lesbian" wasn't as fun a character as I think the writers intended her to be. The main character wasn't interesting to me in the least, even though she was supposed to be some deep soulful writer. I will tune in next week, but I'm not expecting much.

As for the sex scenes, they were good. :) However why are the girls in this show SOOOO skinny? I'm not a fan of the anorexic look, and this show seems to have it in abundance.

Patman 01-19-04 08:03 AM

I won't be seeing it until the repeat Wednesday showing because "Curb Your Enthusiasm" ran long, and I was recording the "Actors Studio with Charlize Theron" at 11 p.m. last night.

Besides the stereotyped characters (I'll assume the characters will get more rounded in later episodes, although Eric Mabius' character is too freakin' perfect), one of the things that bothered me was the quick jumps from story to story. There were times a scene lasted barely a minute, and it seems like I was watching a series of sound bites. Even with 1-1/2 hours, it felt like there were way too many characters which diluted the whole thing.

Naked Mia Kirshner

Not to say it's a bad thing, but the emphasis on the sex scenes made it feel like an overly long episode of "Red Show Diaries" ;)

Wednesday can't come soon enough!

Mamma Mia! I've been waiting to see more of sweet Mia since I discovered her in Atom Egoyan's Exotica, one of my favorite movies. She looked fine in the unknown film Century Hotel and I even watched her in the ridiculous but fun Wolf Lake. Showing up on 24 was a surprise and this was an even bigger surprise. She's a bit scrawny these days but she is so cute and adorable. That scene towards the end of the show - WOW! (not to mention the earler one when she came home to her boyfriend). :)
The L Word has potential, but don't expect the slickness of Sex and the City (which I bailed on after season 1) or Queer As Folk (which mixed preachiness in with with the sex, techno and camp). TLW is comparatively low-key but still funny in spots, especially when dealing with straight men. The women are MUCH hotter than SITC and the Samantha/Brian-type rock chick character will keep up the "fresh meat" parade.
One quibble - I've worked in San Francisco for 30 years and have never seen so many attractive dykes in one place (maybe i don't get invited to the right parties). I know the show is set in Hollywood, but c'mon, there must be a few Jane Hathaways and Tugboat Annies in the crowd somewhere.

Frank TJ Mackey 01-19-04 01:07 PM

I've hardly seen the lovely Jennifer Beals in anything since "Flashdance" years ago.

I do remember her in "The Anniversary Party" though.

Pam Grier seems totally out of place in this show.

Patman 01-19-04 01:09 PM

Jennifer Beals was also in "Rodger Dodger".

Mia was recently in "Not Another Teen Movie" which is a recommended by me. Pretty amusing film.

Jepthah 01-19-04 02:13 PM

I must, must, must find a way to watch this (not a Showtime subscriber) now that I find out Mia was...was she in fact, fully nude? -eek-

Jonny2k1 01-19-04 02:34 PM

I actually liked this show quite a bit, and not just for the great nudity (although that didn't hurt.) I was starting to get into the characters. Jennifer Beals and Mia Kirschner
