Actor Who Played Wilson On 'Home Improvement' Dies

Hindman Was 61

POSTED: 7:02 a.m. EST December 30, 2003

NEW YORK -- He was little more than eyes and a forehead peering over the backyard fence.

Earl Hindman, the actor known to millions as the odd neighbor in the long-running television sitcom "Home Improvement," has died of lung cancer at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut. He was 61.

Hindman's character Wilson doled out bits of folksy wisdom to Tim Taylor, the embattled main character. The show was an ABC hit through the 1990s and is still seen in syndication.

Before appearing on the show, Hindman played Detective Lt. Bob Reid for 16 years on the daytime drama "Ryan's Hope."

Hindman also acted on the stage and in movies. He was born in Bisbee, Ariz., and studied acting at the University of Arizona.

Wow, that's sad!

This is sad to hear, he was the main bright spot of Home Improvement, though it did get tiring after a few years of Tim having to learn his lesson over the fence. Still, he was a very strong presence when onscreen.

Was there ever a reason given for not showing his face? Even on the final episode he came out with a little piece of fence he held over his face. Kinda silly at that point.

just a gimmick. Originally, I think the viewers were supposed to perceive it as a form of Tim's conscience.
