I recently got a copy of this.. it's just excellent. Very well done. If you're in the market for a good series to watch/own grab a copy of this right away.

spainlinx0 02-20-04 03:40 PM

I also bought it the other day, but I had watched all the episodes that aired, when they originally were on TV. Of course I was disappointed to see it cancelled, but I wasn't surprised. So far the 2/3 commentaries I listened to were good.

Rypro 525 02-20-04 04:23 PM

well, i think Serenity wasn't shown first because either joss or fox wasn't satisfied with the finished product and had a few reshoots.

It was Fox - they made Joss & Co. write a second pilot over a weekend because they thought the original version didn't have enough action or some such thing.

*Spoilers on unaired episodes below*

Anyway, I meant to post this a couple of months ago: I watched the unaired episodes and really enjoyed 'Trash' but the other two were really so-so. In this respect Fox did air the best episodes, albeit out of order. 'Heart of Gold' seemed like some bad skinemax plot and 'The Message' just didn't get to me. Except the ending - some real emotion acting as a real funeral for the show.

Jay G. 02-20-04 06:44 PM

FOX didn't like the original pilot, so Joss went back and did some reshoots/editing for the pilot. However, FOX also wanted to see how the show would work as an hour-long show, so they asked Joss and Tim to write an hour long episode to show what the show would look like on a weekly basis. And just in case FOX didn't like the new pilot, the episode should also work as a first episode. So Joss and Tim wrote "The Train Job" in one weekend. FOX liked it enough to approve the series.

Then Joss turned in his new version of the pilot "Serenity," which Joss prefers and is the version found on the DVD set. FOX decided to go with "The Train Job" first anyway. Now, it may be that FOX still didn't like the pilot episode, although they eventually aired it. However, Joss got the distinct impression that nobody even watched the new version of it, it was never considered as being shown first after its initial dismissal. Remember that FOX premeired both FIREFLY and JOHN DOE on the same night. FOX may have just liked the idea of a one hour premeire, since it allowed them two premeire to shows in one night.

As for the unaried episodes:
Spoiler:
"Trash" is one of the show's best episodes. It helps that it was written by Ben Edlund, and features the return of one of the more interesting guest characters. And I actually liked "Heart of Gold." It wasn't the best episode, but it was far from the worst. A good, solid episode that explores Mal's and Inara's feelings for each other. "The Message" was problematic for me, however. Overall it was good, but the ending relied on a contrived scenerio where the heroes don't let someone in on a plan for no good reason. Letting him know the plan wouldn't have done any harm, and it most likely would've done a world of good.

Finally, I think the main reason that FOX went with "Objects in Space" over any of the other unaired episodes was that it was a Joss Whedon episode, written and directed by him.

crankyman 02-21-04 09:29 AM

objects in space was just brilliant. great story and great character acting. my favorite of them all.

fox airing them out of order is really what killed the show. i started watching them when they originally aired and was just a bit confused and the show just didn't click with me.

now that i have the dvd set...and watched them in order i'm extremely pissed this isn't still on the air. stupid studio execs.

General Zod 02-23-04 09:23 PM

Just finished watching the latest one.. Excellent series..

I noticed universal pictures has "Serenity" coming soon. You can check their web site here. ... W00t!

That being said, I'm really, really glad I didn't watch it on TV. Because this is just one more reason to truly hate FOX. I got to the end of the series and almost cried because there aren't going to be any more episodes. I loved the entire crew of Serenity. They did such a good job casting the characters. And who can't love Nathan Fillion as Mal?
Spoiler:
Come on, he freakin gouged out Xander's eye in Buffy.

Gilgamesh1082 - please consider spoilerizing your thread. I've been reading this and the "Firefly - good blind buy?" threads considering a purchase and, like many others, I've been watching Buffy / Angel exclusively on DVD. I've completely avoided all Buffy / Angel threads so as to avoid spoilers past Buffy 5 / Angel 3. I was prepared for a few minor Firefly spoilers, but not expecting a major character spoiler for another show! :-( Bummer.

Bcolon 03-23-04 07:29 PM

I just finished the boxset and am now extremely depressed that, that is all I am going to get. I have started watching less and less tv over the last few years, so it is rare when I find a show I actuallylike these days. It was spectacular. Jos Whedon is one of the most talented guys in Hollywood right now, but did he really think taking a genre show to a major network was a good idea? Buffy would have been canceled after one year too if it had aired on Fox. Firefly would be thriving right now on WB or even UPN or Sci-Fi. Hopeully the movie will be sucessful and they will try to launh a new tv series.

Gah, my bad. That quote was made about 4 months ago and I figured that everyone who had wanted to see the last season of Buffy had done so. Especially considering that the last season played like 3 times on FX in the past 4 months. And that the show had ended a year before that. And you could find every episode on Bittorrent on any given day. :(

I'll go back and spoilerize it though on your recommendation.
Again, I am truly sorry.

Firefly was the subject for a 4 comics storyline in the online comic strip PVP:

The author also wrote some comments about the show.

There are a lot of occasions in my everyday life were I say "Ha! That's going into the strip." It's rare that an idea translates almost VERBATIM into four convenient panels, however. Today is one of those days.

I got the Firefly DVD set for my birthday because so many people told me that the show was great and that it was a tragedy that it got dumped. Today's strip is almost EXACTLY what happened when my wife and I sat down to watch the pilot last night.

You guys were right. Firefly is AWESOME. It's great.

Well, at least the FIRST episode is. I have no idea about the rest yet since I'm forbidden to watch them alone. Doing so would be committing DVD adultery.

Firefly

Well, we finished the Firefly DVD set last night and it was a very sad moment. The last thing I watched on the DVD was the cast and crew featurette. Everyone involved clearly loved the job and were genuine friends. Ron Glass said that he was looking forward to the day when talking about his Firefly experience didn't make him cry. It's a real injustice that this show is off the air. It really never got a chance.

Good news, though. The Firefly movie has been greenlit and I suspect that with the success of the DVD and upcoming movie, we'll probably get more firefly shows in the future. Here's hoping.

Oh, and everyone at The Firefly fansite: I saw your post and didn't get that email you sent. I'll do my part to get the show back on the air when the movie comes out.

No big, and I appreciate your comments. I wasn't going to mention it as I can see it was written a while back, but people do dig up old threads when researching purchases (as I obviously did, looking for opinions on Firefly). Just wanted to avoid someone else reading the same thing. You'd be surprised how many of us have been catching up on those shows through DVD. Thanks for adding the spoiler.

Changing subject, I decided to order Firefly based on all the positive comments and reviews on the forum. Looking forward to watching it.

Edited for typo.

Gizmo 03-24-04 01:25 AM

I'm sorry, but why should he have to put that as a spoiler? That episode is close to a year old! When can we not put spoilers? 10 years after the show aired? C'mon, I can see a few weeks, maybe a couple of months, but a year is pleny of time where we can discuss Buffy (yes, even though its FireFly thread, it still relates to Buffy).

I'm not sure how a thread about people's opinions of Firefly "relates to" the plot of Buffy. The shows share a creator obviously, but that doesn't mean that you'd expect discussion of Buffy's plot in this thread.

In response to your question (though it may have been rhetorical), there is no time expiration on spoilers. Just because something is "close to a year old" doesn't mean it can't be spoiled for those who haven't yet viewed it. By that reasoning, no-one could ever spoil the plot of anything merely because it has been out for a while. Are you saying that the other spoilerized comments in this post didn't need to be, because Firefly has already aired on TV?

Season 6 and 7 of Buffy are not even out on DVD yet, so clearly there are plot points or character developments that aren't known to people who view the series on DVD. I'd refer you to the sticky moderator thread about spoilers at the top of this forum (there's also another one in the movie forum):

A Guide to Spoilers & Tags: How-To, Don't Put Spoilers in Thread Titles, Tag Teasers

Don't spoil films for your fellow members, use SPOILER tags (learn how inside)

Besides, although disappointed, I was polite in my suggestion, and Gilgamesh1082 was gracious enough to add a spoiler tag, so I'm not sure why you have such an issue with it. I even said it was no big deal, and that I was just trying to prevent someone else having that plot development spoiled for them.

And it was something I didn't mind doing either. I put up something that was a spoiler, didn't spoilerize it, and got called on it.

USBrit 03-25-04 02:19 AM

Thanks again Gilgamesh1082, really. My apologies to everyone for hijacking the thread, and if I ruffled any feathers.

Back on topic, based on the info here and in the "Firefly good blind buy?" thread, I decided to order. I just got an email from Amazon that it shipped so I can't wait to dig in. I honestly can't remember ever being this intrigued about a show I missed on the air. As a fan of Whedon's work (great character development, dialogue, story telling), I'm really looking forward to watching it. Unlike Buffy / Angel (which I still haven't convinced my husband to watch), he's going to watch this with me. He loves westerns and anything different so I'm confident he'll give it a chance. Thanks for all the info.

You're gonna love it. But you're gonna cry your eyes out at the end because there aren't any new episodes coming. And lets face it, a 90-120 minute movie is no 22 episode season.

Perhaps the great DVD sales will help get this picked up on another station, or perhaps FOX would pick it back up, like Family Guy.

Anyone but Fox would suit me just fine. I don't want to get a teaser season from them again. ;)

I bought the DVD and thought it was great series. Too bad there are only 14 episodes. Why didn't FOX give it more chance?

Stu 17 04-02-04 06:32 PM

I was down at my grandmas house, nearby Wheeling WV. It was about 6 am when I woke up, had the local country music station on. 98.7 I believe. I kid you not I heard a commercial advertising the premiere of a new show on Fox called Firefly. It got my hopes up, but obviously it was just small market radio filling time. Dang.

Wizdar 04-02-04 08:12 PM

Maybe they're just now getting the TV signal? -eek-

Barry Woodward 04-03-04 02:29 PM

I have to take issue with the fact that this series was made and with such blatantly obvious "sources" and they haven't been acknowledged by the creator of it or anyone invoved. At least not to my knowledged it hasn't. If they have please correct me so I don't look like a total jack-ass.
The great thing about Joss Whedon is he's up front about what influences his work. In many interviews Joss has said he had never seen Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop prior to the creation of Firefy and was bewildered by accusations that he ripped them off. Whedon has said the civil war book "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaaraas and Stagecoach were the primary inspirations of Firefly. Any similarities between Firefly and Outlaw Star are coincidential and perhaps a result of the creators of both shows drawing on some of the same influences.

Jay G. 04-03-04 04:38 PM

He's also mentioned the STAR WARS influences in the show, notably the the original inspiration for the show was combining "Fallen Angels" and the Millenium Falcon. He also mentioned that "Bobby Fett" was the inspiration for Jubal Early in "Out of Gas."

peon73 04-05-04 02:04 PM

i rented this via netflix because i was a little hesitant about buying it without having had seen it yet. and i must say, this is one of the best series i've ever seen. the season can stand on its like band of brothers, in my opinion.

Houstondon 05-31-04 07:28 PM

Any word on the upcoming movie is it stalled out again?
