Battlestar Galactica discussion with spoilers as it airs

I didn't think the previous threads were quite right for this
thoughts so far:
I miss the original theme
blue prints of the original cylons was a nice touch
the new cylons aren't too bad
Starbuck may not have taken things too seriously but the character never would have insulted and then struck a superior officer
was that a modified original theme I heard when the tv show with Baltar started?
the museum with the original cylon, basestar and fighter was nice

the new cylon fighters look more like Kilrathi fighters from Wing Commander 1 and 2

Pretty decent so far. Some good ole tributes...

Different show than original (as expected), but decent so far (needs a lot more Sci-fi is my only complaint right now). Long way to go.

Just waitin' and seein'. Will it be a train wreck(that I can't help but continue to watch), or will it develop into something decent? New cylons were nice, hope we see more of them. The Starbuck character seems okay so far.

Need a little "By your leave" action.

Well, as a fan of the original, I must say I liked it. Liked how hey handled the space flight, actually using thrusters instead of having the magical ability to turn in space, along with the lack of over the top sound in space (similar to Firefly's approach)! Liked the low tech look of the Galactica. Liked most of the new characterizations, although It seems that Appollo has a major attitude problem with pops(which could be interesting).

The Cylons certainly seem like they have a major problem with humans what with killing babies and all!!!

I'll be tuning in for the whole series. I'm certainly glad I avoided most of the spoilers and didn't pass judgement on the show without seeing it like many in the other Galactica threads.

Trying to keep on open mind about the show I ended up liking the show. I loved the little touches to the old show. The museum the old cylons. The old theme played in the background.I liked the direction they went with Baltar. The effects were really well done. The score during the space battles was really good as well Edward James Olmos(I think looks better without the mustache) was great as Adama. Look forward to part 2.

Having never seen the old show I really liked the show. Ill be tuning in to catch the next few episodes. I really like how the sc-fi channel does their mini-series (Dune).

DAMN! This was good!

I can’t remember the last time I saw spaceships that didn’t make bank turns.

Without going into nit-pic mode, I’d have to say there’s nothing about this I didn’t like.

The “kids” are gonna hate it: not enough action.

When's the DVD coming out?

I enjoyed it, and I'm not having to take it as "just another space show" to enjoy it, I'm actually going to call it BG

Whew?

I think the folks at Sci-Fi Channel can breathe a big sigh of relief.

From what I've seen so far it's a much better show than I anticipated. I think the more "adult" tone of this miniseries actually works, and I think with the right writers we could actually have a potentially decent TV series. (ducking brickbats )

I liked the new pilot a lot. I'm calling it that cuz I just get the feeling that there's gonna be a whole series, or a series or mini-serieses

I always loved the original show (not to the fanboy level, but still) and I think the first episode was graet. It did seem a little slow starting out but I guess it's just that everything needed to be established. Once the poo started hitting the fan it got really good. I liked the original cylons in there, in the blueprints and the museum or whatever that was, and I thought I heard the original theme played when the vipers did the fly-by in the ceremony.

Some things I miss (and it has nothing to do with anyones gender), the vipers didn't have the old laser gun sound And in the civilan scenes on Caprica, people are wearing normal cloths that we would now. I even saw a shot of a hippie guy with dreadlocks and a hippie shirt. One thing I don't like is when sci fi cloths are way over the top, but here it seemed like a guy in a normal business suit just didn't seem right. I bet if we could zoom in we'd see L.L. Bean on the tag I know it's prolly because they're trying to make the connection with earth, etc, but still. Anyway those are minor things. I thought part 1 was great, and I'm kinda sad that we're only getting 2 episodes.

From the reviews and bad buzz I wasnt expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it. Even with the small amount that we have seen of Starbuck I already find her annoying.

I liked ! Never saw a lot of the original and was expecting the *worst* from previews and such.

Nice going scifi ! (I can still hate Bonnie silently of course)

All right...it's time to call out all those who "bashed" this program before it even aired. This was a REALLY GOOD show! Far better than most pilots (or mini-series) I have seen in the sci-fi realm.

I'm looking forward to part two tonight!

I'm certainly not in the "love-it-death" camp, but ended up enjoying it. The first hour nearly put me to sleep, but certainly picked up the interest level after that. I expect the second half to be more to my liking.

I guess the one thing I disliked the most was Baltar's betrayal. I was really hoping that one element would be carried forward from the original. If this mini-series ends up being a pilot, I don't see how Baltar can serve as a constant antagonist. He fully regrets what he was responsible for and I can't see him going full-on evil. Even when he had the chance to save his own skin, he didn't.

I also hope we get more Cylons than just Number 6. They sorta feel like the "faceless" enemy right now.

The Carnivale thread said it too: Paramount shoulda kept Ron Moore over B&B.

I could go on a lengthy rant right now about fans and their tendancy to ruin good things before they happen, and this was almost one of them. I never understood the negative feedback surrounding this series before it ever aired, as if anybody complaining about the show before it aired knew what the hell they were talking about. Fans have ruined many good potential movies, TV shows, DVD releases, and more. I think the lesson learned here is keep your mouth shut before something comes out then give it a chance. I was one of the rare ones on here that acutally posted I was looking forward to this, and I was not disappointed at all.

On Nov 11th, I wrote this email to a friend:

You know, I was watching the first disc to my Battlestar Galactica set this morning and early on in the first episode, the Cylons completely decimate the Battlestar Atlantic. The entire thing just blows up in front of the eyes of the crew of the Galactica, and what do they do? They just go on their business as usual!!! I am thinking one of those Battlestars has got to be just as huge, if not larger, than both WTC towers put together, not to mention they had a full compliment of crews, and no time to evacuate before the Cylon attack. And there are like 10 other Battlestar ships that are likewise destroyed, leaving Galactica the last Battlestar ship. Like 11/12ths of this star voyaging civilization is wiped out in just a matter of a day! As if the Atlantic wasn't enough! I just have to wonder if they made this show today if they would handle Galactica's responses just a little differently, considering their reactions were not too realistic compared to the real life reactions we saw when a similar disaster happened in our world.
I was impressed, greatly impressed, with the sheer amount of humanity they put into this new series. When they learned the news of millions losing their lives, nothing was easy about it, nobody just went on with their business. Even the loss of 80 or so people on the Galactica was handled with great humanity and care. That has been my major complaint about sci fi over all, that people, and MASSES of people, die all the time with little or no emotional impact on the community they were a part of. This is clearly Galactica in the post 9/11 world, and clearly sci fi in a post 9/11 world, and I think it's far better because of it.

And I also think that this series is far better. I loved nearly every aspect of this series, especially the way they handled how the homeworld came to be compromised and ultimately destroyed. I went into this series with no hopes either way, neither for it to suck or for it to be great, and everything I saw made me just love it. Who were the "fans" that were complaining about this? I am glad the fan reaction to this series didn't kill it before it hit the air.

The only thing I really missed, though, was the Egyptian influence on the series. Where were the pyramids on the homeworld? And the Egyptian inspired designs for the costumes? Other than that, I had no problems with any of the "changes" they made (like the changes they made with Starbuck. Who cares? Does the character stand well on her own? That's all that matters here, people, and I think she does. Who cares if the original Starbuck wouldn't strike a superior officer? She did, deal with it.), tho I am purely looking at this series as a re-imagining of the orginal concept, as it didn't strike me as a prequel or a sequel to the original series. It really seems to be a remake.

I don't think he was trying to be the "BIG" man and do the right thing as far as the lottery was concerned, remember when his name was called his first reaction was "I didn't do anything.". I'm thinking he was/is afraid of being found out. Remember, his first reaction with Cylon chick was wether or not anyone knew about his involvement. She even made the comment on how he was ignoring the fact that his civilization was being wiped out and that all he could htink about was saving his own neck.

I'm thinking once he realizes he got away with it, he'll be really bad. I'm sure the Cylons will or maybe already have made him an offer he can't refuse.

How? Give some examples, if you don't mind.

If you’re suggesting others have an influence on your opinion, then I would suggest the opinion is not really your own.

------------

My opinion on the Baltar thingie: this was a “gotcha” to the fans of the original. We’ve had several nods to the original (the plans, the “museum,” the music during the flyby), so why not give us a little joke?

I mean, tell me you didn’t think Baltar was gonna pull a fast one when the old lady handed him the winning number. Huh? About the only thing that would have capped the scene for me would be him geeking the camera.

I'm thinking Number 6 is the evil one, and Baltar is just a patsy in this incarnation.

I liked it. A good concept and though I don't know htat much about the original, I think there's some good stuff here.

I like the casting. The sets, ships and costumes all have a good look.

Heck, it's Sci-Fi and it's free. Would take something of far lower quality to not have me tune in.

I''ll watch tonight, too.

I liked the look and the story overall, but I didn't really like many of the main characters at all. I found Adama boring, Apollo a whiny brat, Starbuck annoying, and Col. Tigh unlikeable. I thought the most interesting scenes were the ones with the Cylon and wish they had more of that.

Damn. It was actually good. I was all prepared to go into an rant about how they screwed up BSG but they didn't. They even had all of the little touches that old fans can pick up on. The old Cylon blueprints, the original theme during the ceremony, etc.

For once, SciFi did a good job. Was this the guy who could've taken over Star Trek? The new BSG makes me think he would have done wonders with Enterprise.

I was very impressed. People need to get over this feeling that their childhood memories have been assaulted just because the remake dares to deviate from the original. If someone doesn't like it after it has aired, that's fine. Slamming it before you've ever seen it is just ridiculous.
