Well that clears that right up thank you very much JMS.

Chew 03-22-04 12:49 PM

BendOverBoy??

The fun never ends, eh Bando?

Bandoman 03-22-04 01:37 PM

Someday I'll have my original name back...someday...

dstrauss 03-22-04 08:06 PM

Close, das. I'm hearing it's a theatrical release from Winchester Films in the UK, but then again, that's news from three months ago and I haven't checked to see if anything has changed since then.

Derrich 03-22-04 09:34 PM

I'm beginning to think JMS is a little full of himself. B5 is great and all but really, there was less secrecy surrending the SW prequels. No matter what he announces, it'll be at least a year(maybe 2) before it's released. It'd be better to just say 'I'm working on the script for a B5 related feature' instead of shooting riddle on the net.

Lucas didn't have to contract out to other studios/investors. He could announce whatever and whenever he damn well pleased, without violating a contract.

JMS doesn't have that luxury.

Derrich 03-23-04 12:42 PM

I don't believe that a studio or investor would say to the creator of a highly anticipated show 'Don't tell ANYONE, or else!'. We all knew about Firefly before Joss's pet project was 'officially' announced. The same goes for the New Stargate Series and the SG-1 feature(which was replaced with another season on SciFi). JMS does this a lot. Telling everyone that something big is going to happen but he isn't allow to talk or the world will cave in. And by doing so, making the announcment seem to be REALLY big.

He's grandstanding. And even though I love B5, JMS is the creator of a show thats been gone for 5 years and spawned 2 failed sequels. He needs to get off his high horse.

I think you’re wasting your time. You’re suggesting that a Sacred Cow is anything but perfect. I’ve said as much about Joss, and they posted a “click this link to automatically put Wizdar on your ignore list” thingie.

BTW, you’re not suggesting JMS has anything to do with the new Stargate abortion, are you? I don’t know one way or the other – just curious.

das Monkey 03-23-04 03:16 PM

To be fair, <b>Wizdar</b>, what got people upset about your comments wasn't the implication that Joss/JMS were flawed, but the implication that we only liked their other work because we're mindlessly following them around and blindly praising them as gods. As you've recently learned with <i>Firefly</i>, this is not always the case. And I suspect you'd like <i>Jeremiah</i> too.

I hope that you're not implying that I'm blindly defending JMS here, Wizdar. I'm not a JMS Kool-Aid drinker or anything... I just don't see how giving fans a not-so-subtle heads-up about a potential new project (and being a little playful about it) equates to the man "grandstanding" or being "full of himself" or "on a high horse". That level of hyperbole seems a bit extreme for posting a little riddle on the net.

The guy isn't allowed to make a formal announcement, but he wants to let everyone know that "something" is going on. I don't see the issue.

Derrich 03-24-04 12:33 AM

I dont believe for a second that JMS is under some wierd gag order. I can tell you right now what Speilberg's next 2 movies will be. I can tell you who the major players are for the next Batman movie. But God forbid JMS confirms that he's working on a film version of a TV show. The people controlling JMS are so worried that if word gets out the profits will vanish that they won't allow him to even say he's working in it? It doesn't make sense and the only reason he gets away with it is because people go around calling him the 'Great Maker'.

Wizdar 03-24-04 12:54 PM

To be fair, das, it seems (to me, at least) that there are those who would consider Joss’ shopping list a work of genius. While I’ve grown to like Firefly, I certainly don’t think it’s high art. I wonder how it would have been received had it preceded Buffy?

bboisvert, I wasn’t actually addressing your comments, although I can’t deny the possibility of being influenced by them. I have a soft spot in my hard little heart for folks who take an unpopular viewpoint, which Derrich appears to be doing.

And, to be fair, there are times when I’ve wanted to put Wizdar on my ignore list. -ptth-

To my detriment, I often forget that folks take me much more seriously than I [usually] intend. Or that some opinions are more important to the poster than I realize.

B5Erik 05-23-04 01:38 PM

So has anything been announced about this "project?"

I'd love to see something new from the B5 universe - especially if the original cast was involved (at least some of them). Of course, any plans to include Dr. Franklin will have to be changed with the sad passing of Richard Biggs, but maybe a credit dedicating the (fill in the blank...show, movie, whatever) to him would be nice.

In a posting by JMS a month or so ago, he made reference to punching a 2.35:1-sized hole in a wall, which would seem to imply that there's a theatrical movie in the works.

And, this is completely unofficial, but the rumors have always been that if a Babylon 5 theatrical movie was made, it would cover the telepath war. It is interesting to note that neither the novels, comics, telefilms, or "Crusade" covered this seemingly important part of the B5 timeline.

Here's the Lurker's Guide page to the "theatrical movie" that's been discussed for years: http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countr...guide/116.html

Chew 05-24-04 06:21 AM

Does that mean plenty of Bester? Koenig must be happy, the non-Trek roles have been a little sparse on the big screen lately. ;)

Chew 07-24-06 05:28 PM

Bumping a two year-old thread as there was apparently something much more concrete at the ComicCon over the weekend:

JMS says:

The biggest announcement I'll paraphrase: Every 6 months, I get together with WB to discuss what to do something with B5. The DVD sales have raised over 500 million in revenue. Now, I produced B5s 110 episodes at about 90 million dollars. Somehow, B5 is still 50 million in the red. Every time I mention that to WB they say We made a good deal, huh? Anyway, they asked if I wanted to do a feature film but I declined mainly because I can't yet picture structuring a B5 movie as long as [Andreas Katsulas] and [Richard Biggs] insist on staying dead. Maybe in a year or two I'll be able to but right now I can't do something big and those two roles will NOT be recast.

So I thought about it, and I suggested a bunch of short films. Little mini-movies or an anthology show set in the Babylon 5 universe. I pick a character and develop an hour-long story around that character. Stories that I wanted to tell during the B5 series but never had the chance to develop. They said, Okay. I said I wanted complete creative control. Do not change my words that I write, and I want that in writing. They said, Okay. And I want to direct. They said, Okay.

This project was green lit less than two weeks ago. Its going to happen. Production starts in September in Vancouver, Canada. Post-production will occur from October to February with a release of the first three anthologies in the second quarter of 2007.
and

J. Michael Straczynski announced a new Babylon 5 project.

It's called Babylon 5: The Lost Tales.

It will be a direct to dvd collection of 20 minutes stories set in the b5 universe that will feature the prominent characters.

These stories will expand on the characters that were previously established. The only character he mentioned would not be covered would be G'Kar since he believes no one should ever voice G'Kar except for Andreas Katsulas, who passed away earlier this year.

Warner Bros has greenlit the project and he says production starts this September, hoping for a DVD release in the second quarter of next year.
It's all quoted from AICN, so let's not start holding our breaths just yet.

20 minutes? Can't do a whole lot of B5-size epic in that! I guess I was excited a couple years ago, but the death of several important actors and the anthology aspect sorta results in a "m'eh". :(

das Monkey 07-24-06 05:40 PM

JMS is rarely effective in small doses. His expertise is slow development of characters through massive story scope. I'll be shocked if this is any good and will buy it the instant it goes on sale.

das

Derrich 07-25-06 12:56 PM

This is not good. And it's a cop out. a bunch of 20 minute dvds? Am I reading that right? Are they gonna sell for $4 a pop?

B5 took 2 years, about 40 hours to get good. But JMS thinks he can wrap stuff up in 20 minutes?

I think the Star Wars tv show has a better chance of being good.
D

Chew 07-25-06 01:41 PM

The article says "collection" of 20 minute stories. So, I think we might have 6 on a single disc?

cornflakeguy 07-25-06 09:52 PM

The only thing that is fishy about this is that WB agreed to the whole thing so quickly. They must have money to burn...or...they are so flabbergasted at way DVD's sell.

Is that $500 million figure correct? The B5 DVD's have made THAT much money?

I guess thats the reason WB is so quick to agree. They know B5 crazies like das (and me) will snap it up.

Superman07 07-26-06 06:53 AM

Well they were reunning around $100 a pop for the longest time. Looks like they are down around the $60 range now. But figure $100 a season times at least 3-4 years - can make a pretty hefty profit. Heck, if that is correct I'd be interested to see how much Star Trek has made of dvds.

 That was my reaction as well.

Josh-da-man 07-28-06 07:50 AM

You know what really kills the "Lost Tales" concept for me?

I just know... feel it in my bones... that one of them will be about Lochley.

dstrauss 07-28-06 11:55 AM

jms said that each story would be a half hour or so, 3 to a disc.
