Asking for a recording: "illegal"??

Hey all,

Just wondering something...

There's a show airing in Canada (one shot deal) and I was wondering if asking our fellow Canadian DVD talkers for a favor is illegal on the board.

Can anyone shed some light?

If the person providing the copy is not making a profit off of providing it to you, I believe it is legal. For example, if you pay them just for the cost of the tape and shipping, it should be fine. If you give them a couple extra bucks for their effort, I believe that would make it illegal.

In the US, at least, I believe that it is NOT legal to make a recording and then give it to someone else. I believe that recordings are supposed to be made only for personal use in time-shifting.

It falls under distribution of a copyrighted material. it's a bit gray really. on a legal stand point time shifting has to be done for yourself in that sense.

I wasn't talking about the legalities in the US.

More talking about...ummm...how "legal" it was to ask a fellow DVDtalker to do a favor for you. aka posting about it.

There's a Sarah Mclachlan special that is airing in Canada and I'd love to get a copy on SVHS or DVD if possible. No satellite broadcasting here
