November 23rd, 1963 - a very important date indeed

40 years ago, a significant event occurred on Television. Well yeah, there was that whole Kennedy thing. I guess that was kind of important too - but that not what I'm talking about. No, I'm going on about a certain children's program in England that was destined to become unbelievably huge. Star Wars huge. Who shot JR huge. The last episode of MASH huge.

Doctor Who turns 40 today. And I couldn't let the day slip past without some kind of commentary.

So even if Buffy did bump you off the Battle of the Cult TV Programs - yeah, lets see how many people religiously watch THAT show come half a century from now - I'll still raise a glass to ya.

Now, if you'll excuse me - I'm off to watch all my Who DVDs. See you in about 80+ hours.

Doctor Who has meant many things to me in my lifetime. I've just been reading the many viewer memories and recollections over at Gallifreyone. I would've liked to add something there, but didn't have the time. Anyway, believe it or not, it was my interest in Doctor Who that made me remember the other special meaning to Nov 23, 1963 i.e. the assassination of JFK. So a long time ago in school, there was an extra credit question on a history test, and the question basically asked what happened on Nov 23 1963. Because of Doctor Who, I answered it right. The points were enough to just edge me into the "A" territory for that class.

Awesome, is it not?

cheers! to the next 40 years of Who!

The special meaning was it was the day AFTER the assassination of JFK?

Aldous Huxley died on 22-11-63, also. I've always found that oddly interesting.

I'm more concern with the way the assassination of JFK effected live news coverage. the the shooting of oswald was the first on live tv. news jouranlist were flooding the station and I would have to say that, that day in particular is one important reason why we have the news coversage and the 24 hour news stations like we do today. a landmark in tv indeed.
