The Talisman is definitely a top tier book in King’s catalogue.

Will now be a Netflix series from The Duffers under their new Upside Down Pictures production company.

A series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s 1984 novel The Talisman which the Duffers will craft alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television. Created by Stranger Things’ Co-EP and writer Curtis Gwinn, The Talisman tells the story of a young man who moves between New Hampshire and an alternate world called ‘The Territories’ to obtain an artifact that will save his mother’s life. While The Talisman shares otherworldly qualities with Stranger Things, “It’s much more fantasy. It has sci-fi. It has horror elements. It has a lot of heart. It has everything that we love. And it’s got the best werewolf character I think, ever,” Matt Duffer told Deadline in yesterday’s in-depth interview.

Yeah, I just heard about this. I was remarking in the Stranger Things S4 thread about how I was reminded of The Talisman due to the nature of the ST story, and then there is even a character reading the book in one scene. I am excited about this development and hopefully there will finally be some movement on filming this.

Me too. When I read it way back when, I thought it would be cinematic but would be way too long for a movie. Glad they waited on it.

I'm a Stephen King completionist. Read everything he's done up to a couple years ago(so about 4-6 recent books I've yet to read), except for two classics, The Talisman and Black House. I've tried the Talisman multiple times but never make it very far.

I'd be down for this so I can finally see what the fuss is about.

Talisman was one of the best stories I ever read.

I fucking love the Talisman. Really hope they can do it justice.

I have tried to read Talisman but never got around to it. A small paperback still sits on my bookshelf but I think due to my faded eyesight I can no longer read the print. May have to try it on kindle or large print. Are the King and Straub portions pretty distinct? I have read several King books but should I try reading on by Straub so I'll know? Nevertheless, these guys seem like the right ones for the job; just hope it actually happens this time after close to 20 years in developmental hell.

It's incredibly cinematic, it has so many aspects that would translate wonderfully to the screen, but yeah, a movie wouldn't be long enough to do it justice. I always thought the same thing about The Sandman comic, I'm so happy that they are both becoming television series.

I wonder if that's why it never clicked for me. Maybe it's Straub's writing style I just can't get into. Story-wise it always sounded interesting enough.

I've only read one Straub book, Ghost Story, and it didn't really click with me because of his writing style. The Talisman seemed to blend the styles seamlessly for me, so I couldn't really tell which parts were King parts and which were Straub parts, I always wondered about how exactly they collaborated on this. On the other hand, when I started reading The Black House, the first couple chapters weren't really doing anything for me, and I almost gave up in disappointment. Luckily I stuck with it and it got much better, I wonder if the beginning was more in Straub's style but King's style kicked in after two or three chapters. I need to read that one again, its been awhile.

I know I read this book years ago but I can't for the life of me understand why this has been bounced around development hell for so long? Is there anything wonky that would make this so hard to produce? I mean FFS we are getting a Derry prequel series made out of thin air.

And why can't they give the Dark Tower a series and finally do that proeprty justice? :(

I think that the story is too sprawling and epic for a two hour film to do it justice. IMO only a television show could adapt it properly, and now with so many channels and streamers in competition for new content, a good opportunity finally arrived.

Amen! Same thing, The Dark Tower could only work as a television series, even more so considering we are talking about seven books, some of which are very long. I don't know whose stupid idea it was to try it as a movie series, and have the first one be a laughably short 95 minutes. I was happy that it wasn't successful, because it was the wrong way to adapt it, fingers crossed that it can be properly developed as a television series (but if King adapts it, he really needs to improve the ending, oof!)
