Looks like NBC is trying to kill Third Watch! Post #1

This snippet is part of a larger story!

http://www.msnbc.com/news/981933.asp

NBC hopes its quirky new dating show “Average Joe” can spark some above-average viewership for the November “sweep” ratings survey.”

THE NETWORK SAID on Friday that its latest reality offering, which offers 16 ordinary shlubs a chance to win the heart of an attractive former beauty queen, will premiere Nov. 3, and run for six weeks.

To make room for the unscripted relationship series in the Monday 10 o’clock hour, NBC will move its police and fire drama “Third Watch” to Fridays at 10 p.m. starting Oct. 31.

The original occupant of that Friday slot, critically lauded but low-rated crime drama “Boomtown,” was benched by NBC earlier this month and replaced with repeats of the popular detective series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Click on the link for the rest of story, but the bolded above pretty much gives you the idea that NBC is giving up on Third Watch, moving it to Friday night, when a lot of people are out and not watching TV. Myself, I have Tivo, so it doesn't matter when it's on, but this is not a good move in my opinion. They will lose viewers on Friday nights!

NBC lately has been trying to quickly catch up to FOX and ABC in the "America's Dumbest Networks" ratings...

If they eventually get rid of this show I will be pissed. If they just get rid of Tia Texada's character, Sgt. Cruz, they wouldn't be having these problems. Or maybe if they hadn't killed off half of the cast the last couple of years.

Superficially speaking, i'd have to disagree. She's the reason I tuned in to the show [well, my laziness at not programming the VCR to stop recording after Las Vegas helped a bit too].

I love the character of Sgt. Cruz. I just wish they wouldn't try to quickly tie up the loose ends from last season, like they have, with the FBI getting everyone off the hook. It was just a little too convenient for me.

I've been tuning in for a few years now (since before they killed off Bobby Cannavale) and she wasn't on the show until last season. I haven't cared for her from day one. She's not attractive and all she does is make a snarly face or stares w/ her eyes and makes ****ed up expressions w/ her mouth. My other problem is that the cops on this show are uniforms, and until recently Cruz wasn't in uniform. I just don't care for her character, that's all.

The girl I liked on the show was Alex (Amy Carlson), but they killed her off at the end of last season. Now she was cute.

I do like the additon of Nia Long to the show, I've always liked her.

Moving a TV show is rarely a good sign, but I think there is another way to look at this.

Friday is nowhere near as bad as Saturday. Law & Order SVU did well in the same slot and I think the guys at NBC think a cop show can do well there. That's why they gave Boomtown a very limited opportunity at picking up the Friday night SVU audience. Now it's Third Watch's turn.

And while this doesn't apply on the West Coast where I live, didn't they just move Third Watch away from Monday Night Football in many parts of the country? I would think that might help an action oriented drama like Third Watch, as long as they make sure current viewers are well aware of the move. You're right that moving a show always carries some risk, but there's a chance this could benefit the show.

I don't think I've ever heard of the networks playing the same show on different nights in different time periods, on a consistent basis. It would totally screw up the Nielsen ratings!
