Thank you das and all the rest

I'm starting a new job next week, and today was the last day at the old one. Ever since I knew I was going to get a new job, I started putting money aside, and today I spent it, the first and last indulgence for some time. Thanks to you gang, and the first ten episodes I watched on Sci-Fi, I picked up Babylon 5 seasons 1,2 & 3 today (two were used and all were cheap!).

Thanks!

Welcome to the adventure. I hope the show brings you as much enjoyment as it has for so many of us around here. Am I to assume you're preparing some marathon viewing over the weekend, or will you spread the episodes out over time?

das

P.S. Best of luck with the new job!

I doubt a marathon is in order, as the weekend is chock full of KILL BILL, cycling, and whatnot, but sometimes I can't sleep, so I'll probably get a good crack at it. Or I'll get sucked in and suddenly it'll be Sunday afternoon and I'll be watching episode 2.16 or something.

I actually don't want to go too quickly, as I understand that the Season 3-ending cliffhanger is a doozy, and Season 4's not out until January!

I got them at Soundgarden in Fells Point. Season 1 was new for $59.99, and the other two were used for $15 less each, but except for some minor wear to the outer case, they are in new condition. They do seem to have the best DVD prices around, especially on the new box sets. Buffy Season 4 was only $32.99 new, but I think I spent enough for today.

Probably a wise move. I've seen the series probably 30 times now, and after a DVD marathon a few weeks back, even I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for Season 4 ... and I know what happens!

Update on my biggest blind buy ever

I really have to slow down. I'm three episodes into Season 3, and I have more than a month until Season 4 comes out.

I liked the first season more than I expected, but I would have to say my point of no return was -- what a surprise -- 2.9, The Coming of Shadows. I was into it before, but wow. And you all say season three is even better.

Without trying to sound too Mickey D's, I AM lovin' it.

I have avoided all the commentaries and almost all of the documentaries so far, and the extras I have watched I don't look at until the end of whatever season they're attached to, so that seems to have kept me from finding out too much. Hell, in all the praise I heard for the show, I only heard one spoiler that turned out to be important, but it wasn't too surprising:

Spoiler:
the Vorlons let lesser races think they're gods, but I was already suspicious of that deliberately mysterious Kosh anyway.

Of course, the big Deep Discount DVD coupon let me order the first 2 seasons of Farscape, so I won't be without another adventure soon. And I did the same thing with that that I did with Babylon 5 -- I listened to Senor Monkey, I watched the first 8-10 eps on SciFi, and went for it.

Thanks!

damn you people and your Babylon 5 praise!! you really make it sound too good to pass up. last time i saw threads praising a show this much was when Buffy was startin its run again on FX, and that went from becoming a "stupid teen show" to probably one of my favorite shows ever. now that i've just recently finished Buffy, i've been needing something to fill the void (besides Angel of course ) guess i'm gonna take the plunge. hope you guys will be 2 for 2.

I wish someone had told me that before I watched all of season 3.

Wait, they did. I just ignored them.

I tried. I really tried to wait just another couple of weeks. But I just finished watching episode 3.22 and have to sweat out the cliffhanger.

Damn, what a show!

Looking forward to April when season 5 is released. I think a marathon viewing will be in order that week.

I so can't wait that long! Luckily I have DS9 S7 and Alias S2 to keep me occupied until then.

I'm watching Buffy (halfway through season 2 and I already have season 3 waiting) but it just isn't nearly as good as B5.

I wish I was in a similar situation. I'd hoped to be when I ordered Farscape Seasons 1 & 2 from DDD. One's on my shelf, and the other is still backordered -- guess which one...

Of course, I haven't really watched any extras or listened to any commentaries on my three B5 sets for fear of spoiling any mysteries, so I could occupy myself with that. Or The Kingdom I & II, or Sandbaggers. Thanks, I feel better about the wait now!

Let's see if you're still saying that after you finish S2.

OK. Now I too will have to succumb to the heavy praise for Babylon 5 in this forum

(deep breath). I've never seen any part of this show, save for a few minutes while I was a bored teenager in the mid 90s, but I'm prepared to try this out..... right now! I'm a huge sucker for shows with long story-arcs (with good plots of course), and I know once I begin, I won't be able to stop. The problem is, Season 5 won't be around for another 3 months, and I'm sure I'll exhaust the first 4 seasons before then. A tough decision, but fellow forum members................ I'm going in.

I have one question though. Do I have to watch the pilot first (The Gathering) before embarking on Season 1 episode 1? Or is it sufficient to just go through the season episodes in order?

Oh wait, never mind. I just found this: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=299855

Note: I've chosen to start watching Babylon 5 before trying out The Sopranos, Smallville, Alias, and Buffy, all of which have been recommended to me recently. But the praise for B5 here is just so strong and irresistable. I know, I sound like I just discovered television yesterday.

Didn't find a thread dedicated to a discussion of Season 1, and I didn't want to poke around too much of the other threads in case I stumble upon something I shouldn't know yet.

Anyway, I just finished season 1 tonight and wanted to post a few thoughts.

Spoiler tags, just in case, for only season 1:

Spoiler:

This started slow. I thought some of the early stories carried some repetition with each character meeting someone from their past, etc. Some of the dialog was cheesy, some of it was good. There was an appropriate level of humor and drama. But somewhere along the middle, near "Signs and Portents", it got better. I could sense a substantial development in the real story, and there were enough going on to keep me guessing about what was really happening, or will eventually happen. I have guesses still, but I'll keep them to myself. Some of the most enjoyable episodes were Signs and Portents, Babylon Squared, Voice in the Wilderness, Chrysalis. I'll say best cliffhanger so far goes to Voice in the Wilderness I. I'll give the most tantalizing scene to the ending of Babylon Squared, when "The One" removes his helmet. Just can't wait until I found out what that was really about. And as the season progressed, I found myself more attached to the characters and their idiosyncracies. The motorcycle thing between Garibaldi and Lennier was priceless. And somewhere, at some time, even the slow scenes such as idle banter at the bar or restaurant became interesting..... because I was suspecting that this is the calm before the storm; the last moments of peace. Anyway, I digress......

I'm looking forward to Season 2.
If someone can direct me to a season 1 discussion thread, that would be great. I see one for seasons 2,3,4 and a couple of others about the sci-fi channel airings, but I don't want to stumble those just in case.

Very, very promising show from just watching Season 1. It was hard sticking through the first half, but it really did get interesting.
I've been watching about 1-2 episodes a night, but I have a feeling season 5 may not be out soon enough for me...

Onwards....

We started the discussions with Season 2, so no S1 thread to point to.

If you're starting to enjoy the show by the end of S1, you'll certainly begin to love it going forward.

Another convert! Hehe.

Autotelik, it might be interesting for you to post some of your “guesses” so that we can either marvel at your insight or laugh hysterically and throw empty beer cans at you (in a good-natured way, of course).

I like that you’re enjoying the character development. Not many comments on that, and I think it’s the strongest point of the 1st season.

I completely agree. Post your thoughts. I think they'd be very entertaining to read. They'd also probably be very entertaining to look back on as you finish future seasons.

As this is B5 we're talking about, I'd suggest having a good supply of empty beer cans.
