NYPD Blue "Shear Stupidity" 10.07.2003

Shear Stupidity

Sinclair calls in a surprise character witness to discredit Haywood's closing arguments in Fraker's case, leaving Tony (Esai Morales) fearing for his career. Meanwhile, a woman begs Andy and John to find her missing husband; and a barber begs innocence after the partner he's into for ten grand is brutally assaulted. Sinclair: Daniel Benzali. Haywood: Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon. Olivera: Vanessa Marcil.
First of all, I was TOTALLY surprised that Vanessa was on [and withOUT that crappy haircut she had when she was last on..]

This ep was better than last week's. Since the beginning of the season, it seems that they're staying away from the "personal" storylines for some reason. They give little bits of Rodriguez & Rita, but nothing comes of it. We haven't seen much of Clark & the doc, and Andy & Connie haven't had much screentime together at all [the scene after Andy testifies was probably the longest..]

Oh well.

Oh...and now that I just finished commenting on the Practice thread, lemme say this...

Sinclair's badgering of Vanessa bothered me. I know he had permission to treat her as a "hostile witness", but I felt there were some instances where Val should've objected..

Or can you not object when your witness is "hostile"..?

I can't see Fraker being cleared of this, unless the jury is as brain-dead as your average California voter.

His segment of testimony was SO poor, and he looks / sounds like a used car salesman.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I am becoming more and more amazed at how BORING the show is this season. I'm really disappointed so far.

Seems like they are totally on autopilot with the scripts. And this trial couldn't suck any worse if they tried.

What was that - the 3rd episode of the season and no partial nudity yet?

Maybe in episode four you can see the naked behinds of Sinclair AND Fraker.

There'll be partial nudity when T-Rod gets his sex scene with his co-worker.

Why has this show gone into the cycle that everyone has to sleep with each other in the squad? Did they learn nothing from Friends? This is how to kill a series.

RE the trial: if you're the DA, wouldn't you stress in your closing that Fraker's blood alcohol was off the charts, so he has no reliable recollection of what happened; AND that Fraker went to Tony, not Tony going to see Fraker. This wasn't a gentlemen's duel, it was one VERY drunk confronting the guy he blamed for his lot in life.

RE hostile witness: I thought from L&O that a witness had to be knowingly (i.e., provable) lying or non-responsive, to be declared hostile.....

RE Rita and Tony: am I the only one that's thinking/hoping this is just a swerve. They set us up for a few weeks, making it look like they are gonna hook up, but then once the trial is over, it just evaporates. They HAVE to realize what this show is gonna look like with ANOTHER squad romance......

NYPD Blue Cop Out?
by Ben Katner

Although Esai Morales survived the shocking NYPD Blue season finale in which his character was gunned down, Lt. Tony Rodriguez still may not be long for the 15th precinct. "I can't say that I'll be on the show for the whole season," the actor tells TV Guide Online. "I have a deal at ABC to do my own series — drama, dramedy, whatever."

Even if this does turn out to be the 41-year-old heartthrob's final year as a regular on the beat, it isn't likely to be his last visit to to the set. A la alumna Kim Delaney (who returns for a weeks-long story arc in episode five), he notes, "I hope that if I leave, it's in a way that I can come back." (Memo to Mr. Bochco: No body bags, please.)

As it is, Morales is surprised that he has been so warmly embraced by NYPD aficionados. "I was nervous [at first], because I'm almost antithetically different [from most of the cast] — I'm not that tall and I'm Puerto Rican," he notes. "But I think not being flashy [or] self-indulgent, and kind of reflecting the focus off of me and back onto Dennis Franz and the rest of the guys, did a lot for me."

We'll say. The master thespian's subtle approach to the ensemble gig has made his on-screen counterpart the first Blue jefe that we really feel obliged to salute. He himself is a fan of his alter ego, too. "Rodriguez has a lot of class," he points out. "Not rich class, but spiritual class. And there aren't enough of us like that [on TV] with my background. So for me, it's a very important thing [that we're doing]."

No argument here. However, what interests more viewers, we suspect, is whether, before he ships out, Morales will play a love scene that's as hot as co-star Mark-Paul Gosselaar's. "If I was in really good shape, why not?" he muses. "[Gosselaar]'s got the buns for it, though, I tell you! But I could still get there." —
