SNL Premiere 10/4/03

You can tell that it is a weak year by how cool the cast members act in the opening credits. This year they are acting like ultra-hipsters, so you can do your own math.

The show looks better now, a little more life. Oh, and since when has Kenan from Goodburger part of the show?

Jack Black looks funny, I hope that things get better this year.

Regarding Kenan...

NOTE to Darrell -- Your Arnie impression wasn't funny at the Emmy's, and it's STILL not funny..

That was supposed to be a Schwartzenegger impression? My god, it's not very good is it? You know being that he doesn't look or sound like him at all while doing it.

I must agree with the Arnold impression. it was AWFUL at the emmy's. they should hire someone to do it right.

They should have had Kevin Nealon do the Arnold impression. The crowd would have gone nuts for it.

Good episode so far.

If they would have done a Hans and Franz impression, I would have laughed my ass off. Sadly, they chose a bizarre non-funny opener.

Hammond's Arnold sucks. They get the teeth and the chin right, but did he even practice since the Emmy's? wth?

I thought he was doing an impression of Eddie Murphy's impression of Bill Cosby. Hmmm. . .

Let me be the first to say it this season:

Jeff Richards sucks.

Not a bad episode, Jack Black always saves the day. But did ayone notice how he said John Mayer's name wrong?

Jack and Seth Meyers were pretty good in the wine bit towards the end. Seth displayed real patience.

I thought it pretty much sucked. Black was into all the sketches, which is a plus, but since they weren't funny, it didn't really matter. Bright spots: Weekend Update and the wine tasting sketch.

They killed the Will Ferrell joke by bringing him on stage. It would have been much better had they just had him in that one brief scene where Jable pushed him aside.

I'm not even going to talk about the Arnold "impression."

meh

I thought the Wade Robson Project skit was funny but you would probably have had to see the actual show on TV to think so.

It really slowed down after the first few skits. Weekend update was great as always. I think next week's Justin Timberlake espiode has a lot of potential to be funny.

And once again, I alone will say: Drunk Girl is awesome. I love that character.

I didn't catch every segment, but from what I saw Jack Black really pulled this one out of the crapper. And the more I think about it, he didn't play up to his potential.

Worst of all their two strongest segments (which are, not coincidently, the two non-skit segments), Weekend Update and TV Funhouse were horrible. That "movie review" by the new guy was just lame. OK, black people are loud in theaters, we get it. Oh, they can't read either? Isn't that nice.

Terrific episode! Sure they had some slow spots, like the awful Shelley Long sketch, but overall it was really strong. JB was WAY better this week than last season. You could tell he was really comfortable and smooth, especially in the cooking school sketch.

Yeah, see, I remembered from last year, that you had a bit of a monopoly on the Jeff Richards-bashing, so I wanted to do what I could this season to let the folks know that you aren't the only one who thinks he's a piece of shit.

I cringed when I saw him in the new intro. Thankfully, he only showed up a couple of times tonight.

What a shame, that the supposed "SNL curse" only seems to affect the talented ones. . .

(EDITED: A few big black "o"s to clean things up a bit.)

Loved the Queer Eye for the Straight Girl sketch.

(Laughing)"I bet you gals know all about 'tearing up carpet'."

(Stone faced) "That is offensive and not funny."

It was the complete opposite of the gay-banter sex jokes the Queer Eye guys do.

You're not alone, brother! Looks like we'll be the only two rooting for her this season.

What happened to Dean Edwards? I didn't hear he was leaving.

Last season, it seemed like Jimmy Fallon was in every sketch. He had none tonight except for the group shot in the monologue/song and WU.

I don't understand why Jack Black is hosting again, he just hosted not too long ago. Despite his bewildering popularity, is there such a shortage of possible hosts for SNL that they have to recycle them from one season to the next?

The show was not good. The fact that they had all summer to write this makes it even worse.

Hammond (is his only appearance of the night) does a terrible Ah-nold. It's weird, since he's usually spot on with his imitations.

The opening monologue/song was fine. It was funny when he was blowing everyone off backstage.

"Queer Eye for the Straight Gal" - So much could've been done with this, but there was nothing.

"Wade Robson Experience" - WTH was that?

Italian Cooking Class - Along with Drunk Girl, I really like the character of Gabe Fisher.

Weekend Update - Some good stuff here, and Finesse Mitchell showed some promise with his bit about movie theaters. I'm sure he wrote the bit when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actually came out, but he's just now getting a chance to use it in front of a wide audience. It mayhave been a little dated.

Guitarist sketch - Why was Amy Poehler doing an impression of Shelley Long here?

Wine tasting sketch - Got old after the 11th spit take.

Telemarketing sketch - Pointless, but okay.

Justin Timberlake next week. As long as he doesn't do the look-at-me-I'm-so-great-I-can-be-self-deprecating routine, it might be a decent performance. Then again, the performances in this show are not the problem, it's the subpar writing.

Honk!

I just want to say, before anyone throws a fit for me wishing that this guy was dead, that I don't really wish he was dead.

Now, do I wish he would go away for a really, really, long time, never to return? Yes. Do I wish death upon him? No.

And yes, I realize that the Curse only seems to effect the cast-members after they've been off the show for a few years, but still. . .

Darrell Hammond's Arnie impression sounded more like a Christopher Walken impression about 75% of the time. Although, the stuff they wrote for that bit wouldn't have been funny no matter how good of an impression he did.

Oddly, I thought the Arnie impression was good. He played it straight and got his delivery right on.

Queer Eye for the Straight Gal. You knew either SNL or MadTV would poke fun at that. The skit was just short enough to be funny. SNL has a tendency to overdue a good thing.

Drunk Girl needs to die. The guy who plays him doesn't seem to be very talented either. His Rush Limbaugh impression was weak.

All the other sketches were really weak. Jack Black did the most of what he had to work with.

Why in the world did they do the Wade Robson Project. At least, I know he is the famous choreographer of Britney Spears and N*Sync and I've seen a couple of his shows but I doubt most viewers have seen this show. Besides, it wasn't all that funny.

Was it not painfully obvious that John Mayer was lipsynching? His drummer was off in quite a few of the shots.
