any opinions on Jeremiah?
I just recently got Showtime and I see the second season starts pretty soon. Can anyone give some basic background on it (without spoilers from the first season)?

Well, you see, Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Was a good friend of mine, in fact. I never understood a single word he said, but he always had some mighty fine wine.

Without spoilers for the first season? Hmm. Basic concept is that a virus wiped out the Earth's adult population (everyone who had hit puberty), and the childred were left to fend for themselves. The story picks up about 20 years later with Jeremiah (Luke Perry) whose one of many random drifters doing odd jobs for food. The world is broken up into small groups of independent leadership, some good and some bad.
He meets up with another random drifter named Kurdy (Malcolm Jamal Warner) and they end up helping each other out of a jam and become tentative friends. Along the way they save some guy's life who was trying to deliver a message to some larger group. Jeremiah and Kurdy try to complete his journey and meet up with a group who's taken over an old military base and has been trying to get things up and running again for society. This group has hidden itself from the rest of the world until they have a substantial network of communication lest they get taken down by looters and such. Jeremiah and Kurdy become one of numerous "teams" that go out on missions looking for information and trying to find solid leadership willing to help rebuild society again.
It's a jms series, so it has a substantial story arc, and the characters are very well drawn. In some ways, it's a lot like Babylon 5. There's a LOT more going on than simply the episodic adventures of Jeremiah and Kurdy, but I'll only go into that if you want me to.
I think it's pretty darn good and am really looking forward to this second season. If you like good character-driven arcing stories, I'd give it a chance.

The only thing I would add to that is: Jeremiah's father was very important to him. He writes a letter to his father in (nearly) every episode, only to throw it in a fire.
Based on the first season, I would say that relationship will be even more front and center in the upcoming second season.

Season 2 premiere is also this Friday at 10pm ET on Showtime.
For those who haven't been keeping up, jms has confirmed that he won't be returning to the show for a 3rd season if the series returns for one. I can only assume it's because the asshats at Showtime tried to get all up in his bidness, and he don't like that too much. He assures us that this season kicks some serious ass, though, and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Entertainment Weekly doesn't tend to get most Science Fiction. They trashed B5 fairly regularly if I remember.
If you're not spoiler adverse, the official Jeremiah site has episode titles, descriptions, and writer/director info for all of season 2 up already.
