Episode 5: 'The Outsider'

(from TVGuide Online)

"Seth's efforts to buddy up with Ryan's new friend (Paul Wasilewski) from the old hood sets off a violent culture clash at a Newport bash that sends one teen to the ER. Meanwhile, Sandy offers an outcast Jimmy some friendly---and free---legal advice about the embezzlement case being mounted against him; Kirsten and Julie have it out over their husbands , who married whom and why during a spa weekend away."

Well no one got hit tonight in a fight, but somebody was shot -
Spoiler:
Luke
.

This show is good, but the weak link(or the worst actor of the bunch) is the guy who plays the lead character, Ryan. This guy can't act. It reminds me of Tori Spelling on 90210. Regardless, I still like this show for other reasons - maybe he can get better, who knows...I'll definitely stick around to find out.

Why is summer eternal in the OC? Aren't they supposed to be "16" and "17" year olds?

The actor who plays Ryan does has a pretty limited range. I highly doubt he will ever improve. The chemistry between him and Marissa leaves is quite lacking.

The "$500 Day Coke Habit" comment was very funny. In keeping with tradition, I think a fight between Julie and Kirsten was in order during the sauna scene.

Then again, another potential fight scene was missed during the golfing scene between Sandy and Jimmy.

The Donny character was hilariously stupid.

I was thinking the same thing.

The $500 dollar a day coke habit line was good and so was the conversation between Ryan and Seth at the end about when they're together they're unstopable and when their seperate people get shot.

Actually, I like the chemistry between Marisa and Ryan, they're sweet together.

Their chemistry is pretty good, but his acting, in particular his range, is fairly limited. He does have that one look down though.

He's got the one look, but that's it. The rest of the time he looks so out-of-place. I mean what's with this guy; can he just not smile or something?

I loved that line - great way to end the show.

Good episode last night, IMO. Ryan doesn't make the show for me. The supporting cast (mainly Seth) and the issues the parents deal with are what make me watch.

I find myself getting pulled in more and more as I keep watching it mostly because of the silly promos.

Every time, I see the show though, they keep saying Chino and Long Beach are like these really bad places. Come on, they're not that bad.

Maybe that might be the point they are trying to make? Poor kid living in a rich mans world and in the course of a week or 2 he's supposed to be like the "Water Polo Boys" ? Marissa is going to be in the same boat real soon when they sell the house and she's the rich kid going into a poor mans world.

You get the idea that Ryan will be the catalyst of change for the rest of The O.C. inhabitants. This is what makes it interesting to watch.

This show is one of those guilty pleasures of mine, but I have to agree with most of the previous posters in their assesment that the Ryan guy has absolutely no charisma at all. Everyone else in the show acts circles around him. The writing is much better than average and the issues are fairly interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how many of the storylines will play out.

i live in the OC and for some reason i watched the show for the first time last night.

can someone tell me whats the point to the show? all it is are a bunch of stuck up rich families going through rich people problems (thats not good tv IMO). the show has no seeming direction or purpose.

maybe this is because i missed all the other episodes and i was lost. so whats the deal with this show?

Yeah, I find that a bit odd also, especially having a roomate who's father lives there.

Anyway, I've caught the last 2 episodes only & I can't believe I actually like the show. And I just posted in another thread making fun of teen melodramas. I don't know the names yet, but Peter Gallagher is excellent in this show, & so is the main guys friend, he has some really great lines & tremendous delivery. As a comic book fan & a manager at an A & F, I also like the references. There is someone working on this show that CLEARLY is a comic book fan. 2 weeks ago a chick on the show made a little comic book rant almost exactly like someone would on a comic book message board. And then last night they show a VERY recent issue of The Legion even saying how it is part 3 of a series (which it is). That alone will keep me watching the show.

Why not? It has worked for many previous series.

I liked the Donny guy. I thought he might become a main character until he showed the gun. This show needs another friend for Ryan and Seth.

I agree that the show needs to incorporate more people. It would get lame if the same people were in it show after show

It's either this, or eleven sexy singles moving into a fantasy resort, with one member being voted off each week. It's up to you.

Seems to be working just fine to me. You clearly watched an entire episode (& probably more) & then cared enough to read a thread about that show & THEN post in a thread & talk about it with a bunch of strangers & then FREQUENTLY check back in the thread to see if more discussion has been added about a show you supposively don't find entertaining. Seems to me, this show entertained you in some way. I sure don't post in threads concerning things that don't interest me or about subjects that I don't find entertaining.

I watched it for the first time last night. How many episodes have there been? Seems like a decent show so far, so I'll check out a few more episodes and see where it goes.

to be honest, i watched because my brother was watching and i was dead tired from playing basketball so i basically plopped down and laid on the couch bitching and complaining about how pointless the show was for 45 minutes (begging him to change the channel). i should have gotten up and left but i was too tired.

i then read this thread for answers and got none. plus its fun to complain about stuff. why? i dunno.
