The O.C. - Episode Three
(from TVGuide Online)
The Gamble
"The community's casino-night benefit sets the stage for an even bigger risk after the Cohens take in Ryan's mom (Delane Matthews), even though she may be bluffing about her recent rehabilitation. Meanwhile, Julie plays Sandy against his own wife after learning of Kirsten's secret loan to Jimmy; and Marissa gets an unexpected hand in winning back a jealous Luke."

A predictable episode, but it was still good. Good to see that they got the bad-mother crap out of the way and now he knows he is going to stay in The O.C.
If anything, this episode proved that Adam Brody is the best part of the show, besides the good-looking women, of course.
But seriously - he steals every scene he is in, his timing and delivery are perfect.

I loved when the Melinda Clarke character replied 'you paid for it' when complemented on her dress.
Do parents of 16 year old girls really push certain boys towards their daughters. Do they seriously believe that their daughters are going to marry their Junior year boyfriends? IGranted, I have no conception of this and I am sure that they prefer to see their little angels dating respectable teenage boys but I just found it humorous.

*It was his tone*-wife

Well probably not very often though..... but remember man this is a TV show, and at least early on a good part of this show is going to be about social class issues.......
I wonder how the show is going to change when they start going to school..... will the show be less focused on the parents? .... hum I wonder...

Personally, I don't think the female characters are all that hot. There's something about Marissa that bothers me....and Summer is too skanky looking. I think the hottest female is probably Julie...she's a MILF.

I agree about the girls. I'm not saying I'd kick any of them out of bed. Just that if you rolled up to a random group of girls in Newport, they'd be better looking than this cast.
I'm gonna say that yes, mothers will set their daughters up with whom they want.
And Adam Brody is great. Is he off Gilmore girls now?

Jane Espenson has written a lot of the good Buffy episodes with a lot of nice pop cultural zingers, so it was a pleasant surprise to see her listed as the writer for this week's episode. I liked the episode, and it being the initial episode that finally settles Ryan in The O.C. makes the series less of a "just get him settled already, I'm tired of seeing the poor guy shuttled to and from juvenile lockup" start of the show.
I got just a little choked up when Ryan's mom finally lets Ryan go so he can be at a better place and removed herself from the picture because the instability in her life was not good for her son, who has a good nature, smarts, but a boat anchor of a mom up until now.
