Hey my dad was born & lived in the Phillippines also during WWII. He saw his father & sister killed by the Japanese and I know a good friend of his (in her 80's) that was in the Japanese prison camps. That war really affected both of their lives.

My grandfather was in the Pacific during WWII so this is going to be a huge treat!
The Pacific is the bastard son of the European theater according to Hollywood.

I dont really see why we need this. Windtalkers pretty much covered everything we need to know about the Pacific during WWII.
Of course im not serious. I cant wait for this. BoB was the best miniseries ever. Its gonna be hard to top. Didnt Richard Winters go to the Pacific after V-E? If so I wonder if he'll have a role or maybe just a cameo.

I finished reading Steven Ambrose’ book D-Day last week and started on a book about WWII in general (The Reader’s Digest Illustrated History of WWII). While D-Day was an incredible invasion, there are many other stories out there, some bloodier overall than D-Day. For reference, ~ 2,500 Allied troops died on D-Day.
Seriously, how many of these battles have you heard of (besides Okinawa)? These are all battles with Japan, mostly on islands. Remember that Japan was on the defensive on all of these battles (except for Imphal & Kohima, where they were on the offensive for part of the battle):
Attu (part of the Aleutian island chain, between Alaska & Siberia):
US: 1,000 killed
Japan: 2,500 killed, 28 captured
After this, the US and Canada had 35,000 troops invade Kiska (also part of the chain), only to lean that the 6,000 Japanese defenders had left weeks earlier (weeks during which the island was being bombarded by planes & warships, and being photographed by reconnaissance aircraft).
Eniwetok:
US: 258 killed, 568 wounded.
Japan: 2,677 killed, 64 captured
Kwajalein
US: 195 killed, 545 wounded
Japan: 3,472 were killed, 90 captured (including 40 Koreans).
Palaus Islands (mostly on the island of Pelieu)
US : 1,950 killed, 8,515 wounded.
Japan: 13,600 killed, 400 captured (mostly Koreans & Okinawans)
Imphal & Kohima (“the jungle Stalingrad”, located in India):
British & Indian troops: 17,587 casualties (killed, wounded, or missing)
Japan: 60,000 casualties, of which 13,376 were killed
Okinawa:
US: 6,821 killed, 18,000 wounded.
Japan: ~ 21,000 killed, 216 taken prisoner.
26 US marines who fought at Okinawa won the Congressional medal of honor.
Stalingrad (Russia, obviously, included for comparison purposes):
Russians: 750,000 killed
Germany: 300,000 killed plus 450,000 German allies killed. 100,000 Germans were taken prisoner, of these only 5,000 survived to see Germany again.

This miniseries will be total crap unless they can get talent like Michael Bay, Vin Diesel, Freddie Prinze Jr. and McG in on it.

the thing about Band of Brothers was that Easy Company really was a part of the significant events of WWII: D-Day, Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge, liberation of a concentration camp, capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest..
is there any parallel in the Pacific chapter? while it would be cool to trace the War in the Pacific from Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima/Nagasaki, is that realistic? I'd hope that this miniseries will also follow one company of soliders all the way through.
And I think the real power of WWII movies comes from their authenticity. I much prefer to see a war movie knowing that the soldiers portrayed were REAL AMERICANS, who fought in real battles. not to knock war movies that showed what could have happened, but I think it's important to see what really did happen.

Give up! You can't win! If you hadn't found this thread someone would've found it for you and told you to quit cluttering up the forums with repeat threads
I missed this thread the first time around. The first Band of Brothers was a lot to live up to. They better not make it like a sequel other than the name. The first series is right up there with any great war movie I've ever seen, and a top notch dvd set.

EXCELLENT. If it's anywhere close to BoB it'll be top notch required viewing.

I assume it's nearing fruition as I have seen more ads for the 1st Band DVD set lately and the fact that it's been on HBO on Demand recently. Of course I watched it again.
I echo RoyalTea's sentiment about the authenticity and agree that that is where alot of the original's appeal came from.
I'll be with it start to finish in hopes of another absolutely fantastic miniseries.
