 Thanks.

Wow, HBO must be pretty happy this morning. ;)

Chew 07-17-03 08:15 AM

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The funeral home drama Six Feet Under received a leading 16 Emmy nominations Thursday, followed by three-time best drama winner The West Wing with 15.

The Sopranos, back in contention after missing out on last year's awards because it didn't air during the eligibility period, received 13 nominations, along with the comedies Everybody Loves Raymond and Sex and the City.

Law & Order missed out on its bid to set a record, failing to receive the best drama series nod that would have given it 12 consecutive best series nominations. It's tied for the record with Cheers and M-A-S-H. In addition to a best drama series bid, Six Feet Under also earned nominations for cast members Frances Conroy as best actress and Peter Krause as best actor.

Other contenders for best drama series are The Sopranos, The West Wing, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and 24. Nominees for best comedy series are Everybody Loves Raymond, Sex and the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Will & Grace and last year's winner, Friends.

Jennifer Aniston, winner of last year's best comedy series actress award, received another nomination in the category this year. Her competition includes Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond, Jane Kaczmarek of Malcom in the Middle, Debra Messing of Will & Grace and Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City.

Another member of the Friends cast, Matt LeBlanc, will be up again for the best comedy series trophy he missed out on last year. Other nominees are Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bernie Mac of The Bernie Mac Show, Eric McCormack of Will & Grace and last year's winner, Ray Romano of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Other actresses nominated in the drama series category are Edie Falco of The Sopranos, Jennifer Garner of Alias, Marg Helgenberger of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Allison Janney of The West Wing, who took home the trophy last year.

In addition to Krause, a drama series acting bid went to last year's surprise winner, Michael Chiklis of The Shield, who received the first such honor for a basic cable show. Other nominees are James Gandolfini of The Sopranos, Martin Sheen of The West Wing and Kiefer Sutherland of 24.

No surprises. I don't watch most of the shows that earned nominations in the major categories. Just CSI, West Wing, Sopranos, and Sex & The City.

Shame on the academy for not selecting That 70s Show as a comedy series nominee. That is criminal. Friends is so very tired. Of the episodes I have seen, W&G, CYU, and ELR has never garnered a laugh from me.

marty888 07-17-03 08:45 AM

Oh no .... a category for <i>Reality Competition Program</i> .... this sort of thing should not be encouraged!

What next ...<i>"And the nominees for Best Award Nomination Announcement Program are....</i>"

At least I can say I watch more than 1 nominee in that category. I can't say that for the comedy (and I use that term loosely) series category.

lisadoris 07-17-03 08:50 AM

Hopefully Six Feet Under will win a few awards this year. Glad to see it got 16 noms. I was really surprised to see Alias pick up several nominations, hopefully this can translate into some better ratings. Also psyched to see Bernie Mac pick up a nomination, it would be great if he walked away with the award, that man's just hilarious.

SergeantPinback 07-17-03 08:53 AM

My picks (hopes)...

DRAMA
CSI
Six Feet Under
Sopranos
24
The West Wing

It's close between THE SOPRANOS and SIX FEET UNDER, but THE SOPRANOS is STILL the best drama on TV.

Lead Actress Drama Series
Frances Conroy - Six Feet Under
Edie Falco - Sopranos
Jennifer Garner - Alias
Marg Helgenberger - CSI
Allison Janney - The West Wing

If EDIE FALCO doesn't win for her INCREDIBLE work this last season, there's something REALLY wrong going on here...

Lead Actor Drama Series
James Gandolfini - Sopranos
Peter Krause - Six Feet Under
Martin Sheen - The West Wing
Kiefer Sutherland - 24
Michael Chiklis - The Shield

All great choices, except for MARTIN SHEEN (I can't stand that preachy show), but I have to go with JAMES GANDOLFINI.

Comedy Series
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Everybody Loves Raymond
Friends
Sex & The City
Will & Grace

CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Hands down the funniest show on TV.

Lead Actor Comedy Series
Larry David - Curb Your Enthusiam
Matt Leblanc - Friends
Bernie Mac - Bernie Mac Show
Eric McCormack - Will & Grace
Ray Romano - Everybody Loves Raymond
Tony Shalhobe - Monk

LARRY DAVID. (See above...)

Lead Actress Comedy
Jennifer Aniston - Friends
Patricia Heaton - Eveybody Loves Raymond
Debra Messing - Will & Grace
Sarah Jessica Parker - Sex & The City
Jane Kaczmarek - Malcolm in the Middle

Considering I only watch two of the shows these people are up from, I'd go with JANE KACZMAREK.

Reality Competition Program
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Survivor

The last episode of SURVIVOR stunk! THE AMAZING RACE has emerged as one of the most exciting and fun shows on. There you go...

Miniseries
Hitler The Rise Of Evil
Napoleon
Taken

Well, I only saw TAKEN. I enjoyed it.

Made For TV Movie
Door To Door
Homeless To Harvard
Live From Baghdad
My House In Umbria
Normal

Again, LIVE FROM BAGHDAD was the only one I saw, so I'm probably not qualified...

That 70's Show and Scrubs are the best comedies on tv right now, and it seems like they get no respect.

I don't watch most of these shows either - Friends is the only one I watch consistently; CSI sporadically and The Sopranos once it comes out on DVD. I understand these shows are critical/fan darlings, but they need to find some new blood - there are several other excellent shows out there in tv land. They might as well just show last year's ceremony again.

Patman 07-17-03 08:59 AM

Well, considering the Sopranos weren't even eligible to be nominated last year...

Deftones 07-17-03 09:08 AM

why is it that Jane Kaczmarek gets all the props for Malcom in the Middle when Brian Cranston is infinately better as Malcom's dad.

Also, same goes for Marg Helgenberger. I like her on CSI, but William Peterson does a much better job.

Agreed. Pardon the pun, but this category is a joke. But never had a laugh from <I>Curb Your Enthusiasm</I>? Good God, man - what is wrong with you? :)

The academy's fascination with mainstream popular shows like <I>CSI</I> and <I>24</I> instead of higher quality like <I>The Shield</I> or <I>The Wire</I> is pretty frustrating. I'm glad to see some great shows on the list, but their nominations just seem to be default selections with no real effort made on finding the best of the best.

Chew 07-17-03 09:08 AM

The Futon Critic has posted the creative arts nominations as well. They're way too long to post here, but check the link.

Two items that struck me:

Outstanding Main Title Theme Music
Boomtown
Everwood
Miracles
Monk
No trace of the original Monk theme that was nominated is to be found on the show anymore.

And, the five Special Effects nominees: Buffy ("Chosen"), Enterprise ("Dead Stop"), Enterprise ("The Crossing"), Enterprise ("The Expanse"), and Firefly ("Serenity").

UPN has four of the five. I'll bet Fox wins. ;)

Red Dog 07-17-03 09:38 AM

Almost as bad as the nonsense that was their comedy nominations is the omission of Boomtown from the best drama list and Neal McDonough from the best supporting actor list.

I still don't get the fascination with Six Feet Under. I watched the whole first season and thought is was okay, but the academy treats like the greatest thing that ever happened to television. Unless it has really improved since then, I can only -ohbfrank-.

das Monkey 07-17-03 09:52 AM

Well, take my opinions for what they're worth, but it's either the best or the second best show on all of television IMO, and I'm certainly not one to simply go along with the Academy. Last season, I didn't see anything better, and I watched quite a bit.

You know it's a "slim-pickings" type of year when Hitler gets nominated.

I didn't think Hiter: Rise of Evil was bad. I don't think it was great either. Miniseries are pretty much going the way of the dodo - there is little profit potential in them.

I can't believe Boomtown got shutout of the nominations. I for one can't wait for the DVD release of the first season. Are you listening NBC??? They should follow the example set by 24 and The Shield if they want to build up the ratings for this show. Circuit City has a High Def promo for Boomtown that is just incredible in the picture and sound quality.

Patman 07-17-03 11:15 AM

The thing about Six Feet Under is that I don't really enjoy it all that much as I am in the process of watching the episodes, but it's upon reflection of each episode that it becomes more entertaining and thought provoking. But I don't consider it the creme de la creme, but it'd make my top 10 shows currently on TV, I guess.

Like, I really enjoy most of "Curb Your Enthusiam" while I'm watching it, and some of the bits are fun to run back through my head as well.

veloce 07-17-03 11:27 AM

If they're not going to nominate The Shield for writing and not going to nominate The Wire AT ALL, they're just wasting my time over at that there TeeVee Acadamee.

conscience 07-17-03 11:46 AM

could someone post the supporting nods? I could look elsewhere but I don't feel like it.

The Emmys really need to shake it up. I get sick and tired of seeing the same thing every year. Other than the HBO shows I hardly watch anything else nominated. But I have watched atleast some episodes of those shows and have to say that I have seen better. (That 70s show is easily funnier than any of the comedy nominees)

Patman 07-17-03 11:54 AM

i read that many thought lady mcpalmer was a sure nom for supporting actress. but i guess everyone has their list of sure noms and sure wins

movieking 07-17-03 01:21 PM

I think that Six Feet Under is over-rated as well. I do watch it, but I don't see why it is so critically acclaimed. I would prefer Krause back on Sports Night.

Shows that should have been nominated in my opinion:

Scrubs
King of Queens
Monk
The Shield
Law & Order

Thumbs up for nominations for:

Bryan Cranston
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Tony Shaloub
Amazing Race
Michael Chiklis
Alias people

Thumbs up for not nominating:

ER

I am sure that there are many that I am forgetting in those categories...

Doughboy 07-17-03 01:37 PM

It does seem like the Emmys nominate the exact same shows every year. At least they gave some love to Curb Your Enthusiasm and Alias. Frankly, I would've preferred seeing Alias get nominated for Best Drama Series over 24. The former had a much better 2nd season IMO.

I'd normally be pissed about Buffy getting only one nod(and in the FX category at that), but honestly, its final year was also its worst ever. Now Angel on the other hand got royally screwed. Ok, I know it's a pipe dream to ever think that the Emmy voters would nominate it in the major categories, even though it deserved it. But hell, you'd think it would've gotten something! How about the brilliant fight scene choreography in nearly every episode(Gunn vs. the bodyguards in "Players" being the standout)? What about Best Makeup for the Beast? Best FX?

Then again, I'm starting to wonder if it's not really the Emmys at fault but rather the WB. Not only did Angel get the shaft, but so did Gilmore Girls and Smallville. Does that network do anything to promote their shows?

B.A. 07-17-03 01:56 PM

 to Lena Olin and Victor Garber for getting nominated in the best supporting actor/actress in a drama categories.

some who were snubbed, imo:

Zach Braff (Scrubs) - best actor in a comedy
John C. McGinley (Scrubs) - best supporting actor in a comedy
Wilmer Valderrama (That 70s Show) - best supporting...
Kurtwood Smith (That 70s Show) - best supporting...
Debra Jo Rupp (That 70s Show) - best supporting actress in a comedy
Neal McDonough (Boomtown) - best supporting actor in a drama
Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue) - best actor in a drama
Anthony LaPaglia (W/out a Trace) - best actor in a drama

PacMan2006 07-17-03 02:06 PM

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think it's ridiculous that more than one actor from the same show can be nominated in the same category.

Choices are difficult to make, but they should just pick ONE actor from one show per category. No more nominating three people from the West Wing or two people from the Sopranos for, say, supporting actor. That's an insult to other programs and actors in saying that no one else is as good or did as well of a job this past TV season, when that's just not the case at all.

Dr_Evil 07-17-03 02:21 PM

No love for The Wire which is disappointing. Hopefully next year it will get the recognition it deserves. The second season has been at least as good as the first so far.

nny 07-17-03 02:29 PM

Well, the Emmy's continue to be a total joke to me if for no other reason than their lack of nominees from the WB. I love SFU and I love CYE, but the 2 best shows on TV are Angel and Gilmore Girls.

Also, only 1 nom for The Shield, Scrubs, and Buffy is ridiculous. Buffy didn't have a good year, but there are definitely some categories it should be nominated in. And The Shield and Scrubs are probably the 5th and 6th best shows on TV after Angel, Gilmore, SFU, and CYE.

Of course the best animated shows on TV, South Park and Adult Swim, were shut-out too.

Venusian 07-17-03 02:39 PM

did i miss the list of animated shows?

if there are more than one good person in a show they should get recognized. two people on one show might be better than people on any other show. the critic i saw on cnn said the same thing about WB. they said critics say gilmore girls is the best show on tv yet it gets no noms

Jeremy517 07-17-03 02:44 PM

I like CSI, but its nomination for best drama series is a joke.

rkndkn 07-17-03 03:25 PM

Wow, "Law & Order" didn't get a nom. That breaks its streak after being nominated for 11 years in a row. (12 years would have been a record. )

(I personally prefer "L&O: SVU" right now, though. )

L&O is my favorite show of all time, but it has seriously slipped. It really did not deserve a nom last year. This year, it was slightly better but the Academy definitely made the right call to leave it off.

I prefer SVU now as well.

1) Animated Program (Less Than One Hour): As Told by Ginger, Nickelodeon; Futurama, Fox; The Simpsons, Fox; SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon

(Go Futurama!)

2) Shows on the WB tend to get snubbed *cough*BuffytheVampireSlayer*cough* by those old fogies. It would be refreshing if shows like Gilmore Girls and Everwood were recognized, but sadly, Emmy voters think that being on the Frog means that only teens watch it, and thus it's crap.

Who the hell thinks "Everybody Loves Raymond" is funnier than "Scrubs"? Please! And Will and Grace gets worse every year, and lame celebrity cameos shouldn't equate a nomination.

Ah well. Same old, same old. No huge surprises...
