Last Comic Standing, Part II
Competition is heating up. Dat narrowly avoided going to the gallows this week. Hated to see Rob go, but he was clearly no match for Ralphie.
Did you see Ralphie's girlfriend? WTF? She is hot! How the hell did that happen? |
2 things that bugged me about this episode.. Is Dat really not that funny/ Why do they gang up on him? I don;t get why Ralphie is considered such a heavyweight... He is kind of funny, but he does the same thing everytime about living in da hood

Um ... maybe he's a good person? Or maybe she got caught in one of his folds and couldn't get out ... Rob was very, very funny. I love that style of comedy. The stuff with the colon and semi-colon had me rolling. It's certainly not a style that has a prayer to win this competition, though. Ralphie was off with his timing a bit, and some of his material was a bit stale, but it was still a pro performance. Geoff revealed himself as a big pu**y being afraid to challenge Rob, so maybe they'll go after him next week. And while I don't think Dat has a prayer to win the competition, I'm not sure why he's looked down on so much ... his act is pretty decent, even if he's not going to be a heavy hitter. das |
I agree. The colon, semicolon stuff was inspired.
How about the team picking on Dat and leaving him hiding for an hour? That was so mean. It was like a bunch of schoolkids picking on the little guy who's just trying to fit in. |
Honestly, I thought both of their acts were terrible. (Not that I could come up with anything better, but then, I'm also not a finalist on a show supposedly featuring the best unknown comics).
|
I liked Rob's performance better. Last night was the first time I watched the show and I knew Ralphie's whole performance would revolve around fat jokes. They were fine and I thought they were funny, but it just seemed to be the easy way out instead of coming up with truly original stuff.
|
Leaving Dat hiding all that time was pretty messed up. Being comics you would think they could come up with something a little better than a 3rd Grade prank to make themselves laugh.
As for Ralphie's girlfriend, I know some people can look beyond physical appearance for things such as humor, but come on. NOBODY is that funny. |
Rob beat out Ralphie if you ask me. Ralphie has some good stuff, but he just never got in the groove. Rob was on point as soon as he hit the stage. He has a Robin Williams style where you think he's screwed up, but it just leads into another bit. 'I'm a SemiColon. Just keep writing as long as you want, I aint gonna stop you.' Classic.
Also, I realized the strategy that the coalition has. They felt Rob was stronger than Corey(or wanted to give her a week off) so she challenged some other guy, effectively removing herself from harms way. That forced Rob to pick from the 'Heavy Hitters' and ensuring that he'd get booted. That's really some genuis level plotting. But Coery has to know that after Dat is gone, she's the next likely target. D |
I thought Rob was hilarious last night & deserved to beat out Ralphie. His act was much more intellectual than I expected from him. I thought he was great.
Ralphie was my early favorite but his act gets tired after a couple of sets. My new favorite is Dave Mordel. Maybe my sense of humor is off kilter but I thought the wacky terrorist idea was hillarious. A st-st-st-st-st-stutter who calls in bomb threats! |
Ralphie's act fell short. I liked Rob's set better. Ralphie's "Hood" comedy isn't the same when you realize he is living in this mansion and he has this hot girlfriend which leaves him with only "fat jokes". Why is he a powerhouse? Well he's a fat man. Just with that alone he can get a good laugh.
I'm glad Dat didn't get the boot and I don't see why everyone is out to get him? Hopefully he can make it a bit farther. |

Maybe Dat is shy or intimidated by the others...maybe I just want him to be funny. :p
I agree that Rob was funnier than Ralphie. I hope Dat will get a chance to prove himself to the others. |
In my opinion, I thought Rob was funnier too. His comedy was more original and quirky. Ralphie's was the same old, same old. The kind where people point out other people's differences, blah, blah, blah. Maybe it's just his girly black man voice that bugs me. I enjoy watching him in the house more than his act.
Dat's not funny and next weeks episode seems to show him being harassed about it even more. The hide and seek thing was pretty mean, but it had me rolling. The thing is, I don't know of many Asian comedians who are funny. I really get annoyed by Margaret Cho, and other than her the only other Asian comedian I've seen is the guy with the deep country accent who used to do NBC's Friday Night thing. The thing that bugs me about Asian comedians is that almost every one of them have to resort to doing the Asian-American mock accent to get the audience to really laugh. It's like the audience expects it, and otherwise would be disappointed. (btw, I'm Asian) |
Am I the only one who thought Ralphie was better? Ralphie and Mordel are still the funniest in the house. That terrorist idea was definitely the best.
Also, is Voss going to bitch about every immunity competiton? If everything is so demeaning to you, maybe that's a hint that you shouldn't be there. |
Rob had some great stuff, but his delivery seemed off. Ralphie was more confident, even though his material was more cliche. I did laugh at Dat shooing the cameraman, because I had just been thinking "So if someone REALLY played hide and seek on one of these shows, would the cameraman do the same thing?" The terrorist pitch was great, although it would be better off as a movie instead of a sitcom.

isn't Dat on last comic standing a member on dvdtalk? if he is, we should support him since we're part of a dvd community.
dat's routine on the asian nail saloon was pretty funny, sort of like my big fat greek wedding. whassup with the 2 guys picking up on dat, saying he is not funny. |
isn't Dat on last comic standing a member on dvdtalk? That terrorist idea was definitely the best I realized the strategy that the coalition has. They felt Rob was stronger than Corey Also surprised me that ralphie won by the margin that he did. Rob had my guts hurting, ralphie was funny, but in "that's just wrong" kind of way. I guess "intelectual" humor doesn't win popularity contests, though Shakespear did pretty well making plays on words. |
Dat Pham or D.Pham deserves our support of course!
|
man, i love this show. WAY more clever than i thought it'd be, and the personalities are all great.
i say Vos and Mordal in the final two. |
I'm with the majority of DVDTalkers -- Rob was just plain funnier than Ralphie. I really wanted to see Rob win, too, just to see the havoc it would wreak on the "coalition," or whatever they call themselves. Plus, like I said, Bobert was just funnier than Ralphie.
As for the terrorist sit-com pitch, I thought it was pretty obvious what Dave was doing -- he wasn't playing to the focus group, he was playing to the housemates. He knew (or should have known) that his concept was too out there for a focus group, but was right up the alley of his housemates. He was proving to them that he's funny, so they'll fall into line behind him. A question -- on the preview, they said once it gets down to six comics, they're not going to do the face-offs any more. Does anybody know how they'll eliminate people after that? |
I believe they said there would not be exemptions anymore, they will still do the face-offs.
|
It was weird that Rob got to go after Ralphie. Maybe the comic being challenged got to chose because the other two faceoffs, the challenged comic went last for the advantage.
I was rooting for Rob because he seems like a nicer guy ... someone who also *could* land a sitcom in the future. Still, I thought Ralphie's act though cliched but a bit funnier. I do think it will get old soon. People have mentioned that some of the comics have performed at the comedy club before. I don't think that is fair if you have people that perhaps have seen your act to be voting. This is a great show. my 2 cents. |
