I just watched Fear, Itself the other night. I won't spoil anything, but it has to be one of my favorite episodes to date.

Are you (djbrown) also doing Angel? We're alternating between the two. I'm really liking Angel so far except for ep 4, I Fall to Pieces. I'm not sure why, but that episode didn't do much for me. But the episode right that before was great. I like the 'guy' up on the roof ad-libbing Angel's lines. :)

Gonna start "Angel" when it starts up on TNT in about 3 weeks. Not ideal (and, yes, I know the DVDs are available), but it'll have to do.

Well, I've got a few more watched from the start of Season 4, and the series has made the transition to 'college life' pretty well. But 'Beer Bad' was terrible. And a Tivo snafu caused me to miss 'Wild at Heart' so I had to resort to episode guides to know that
Spoiler:
Oz is no longer

I thought "Beer Bad" was great!

"Beer Bad" is my guilty pleasure Buffy episode. Many fans hate it (I've seen it rated as the worst episode ever), but others like it a lot. SMG was a lot of fun as CaveBuffy. Plus, we get to see Parker get dissed by Willow, then later get beaten down. I love it just for that.

Well, I finally finished season 4 of Buffy. I like to think of the season as one of those pictures that are made up of thousands of little pictures. Most of the episodes (the little pictures), were quite good and very enjoyable. A few were real standout episodes. There were only a few that fell flat in my opinion. But when you put them all together, the larger picture they form just wasn't that exciting. The whole story arc this season just didn't do it for me.

Here's the specifics:

Spoiler:

The Good:

* Anya and Spike. I just can't get enough of these two.

* Hush, Restless, Fear Itself and a few others.

* Xander living in the basement and his job of the week. I don't know why, but I always got a kick out of this.

* Tara. I can't put my finger on it, but I liked her character.

* Anya and Spike again. :)

* The continuing humor. I'd read that the show gets a lot darker after season one or two and always feared that meant that it would be less humorous. But even when the show gets dark and serious, they still manage to keep the fun in it. Every episode seems to have something to laugh about.

The Bad:

* What happened to the Scooby Gang? It felt like Xander was only on the show to fulfill contractual obligations most of the time. Giles main role seemed to be that he had a convenient gathering place. There was a lot of Willow story, but most of it didn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the gang. They work best as a team, not as four individuals. They dealt with it a little in the last few episodes, but it almost felt like and apologetic after thought. Like they realized they had gone way off course and were trying to fix it.

* The Initiative? Buffy shouldn't be high tech. It just didn't work for me. If I want sci-fi, I'll go elsewhere. Buffy should be about the mystical forces of darkness and the supernatural not military guys talking about subterranean hostiles. They fight their battles by hitting the books, not toy guns. This could have been an interesting mini-arc, but didn't work for me as a season long arc.

* Adam. Again, he would have been awesome on a two part episode, but not for main bad guy of the season. He seemed to have a child’s mind in a robot body. He wasn't as evil as The Master, not as engaging as Angelus and nowhere near as fun as The Mayor.

* To a lesser degree (and because I know it's not going away), the magic and Wicca stuff. It segregated Willow too much from the rest of the gang and it just doesn't feel right. In the first three seasons you have a group of ordinary people (plus Buffy) doing extraordinary things. They had nothing really going for them except cajones the size of Lake Erie. Now Willow has this supernatural power and it just doesn't fit right for me.

* Faith. Didn't like her in season three, didn't like her on Angel season one and I didn't like her here. Just a personal thing, but her character has never done much for me. Though I did enjoy the body switching episode.

* Unlike season one, two and three, I can't go out and buy the next season. By the time FX gets back to season five so I can TiVo it, it will probably already be out on disc.

Having said all that, if you rip apart the larger picture and just look at the smaller pictures, most of them are quite good. I'm glad I own this on DVD so I can go back anytime I want, and I will. It just doesn't work as a whole like previous seasons did.

Next up I get to finish season one of Angel. I've been enjoying it quite a bit and I'm looking forward to future seasons.
