Buffy Season 4 - crappy episode?

Hi,

I just watched season 4 of Buffy. On the included message from Joss Whedon it says that there was one crappy episode. what episode was that? I didn't think any of them were crappy.

He was making a joke. He's prone to doing things like that.

Most fans consider "Beer Bad" the worst of the season.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to "Beer Bad."

It was a generally mediocre ep, but it wasn't unwatchable and had its moments, like Parker trying to put the moves on Wil.

"Beer Bad" and "Where the Wild Things Are" are generally considered to be the 2 worst episodes of Buffy from before season 6. I liked both episodes. I think the worst episode from the first 5 seasons was "Bad Eggs".

I think Bad Eggs is bad too... probably the worst from the first three seasons. Unlike stuff like Some Assembly Required or other episodes people consider bad, there was not much development of relationships between characters or anything. Just a bunch of stupid kissing scenes. Lame. The vampires in the episode aren't terrible villians, but compaired to anything else in seasons 1 - 3 they are not very good.

Im in the middle of watching the season 4 DVD set. One thing that has surprised me is how much I like the episodes and how funny Buffy(the actual character not the show) is. It is a total 180 from season 6 and 7.

I vote for "Hush". It is so overrated it is annoying now. The story wasn't better written than the rest. Just a monster-of-the-week ep. Only thing that makes it stand out is they can't talk. The scene with the projector is funny but the rest is not particular intresting.

Buffy...Want...Beer!

Worst ep of the season. Although season 4 is one of my favorites, even though most people crap on it cause of Riley

I personally loved Beer Bad. Sure, it was silly, an Afterschool Special episode, and thematically, a retread of "Reptile Boy" (alcohol is bad), but it was hilarious and had some nice moments: the snotty college guys being dicks to Xander, Xander's feeling of insecurity, Cave Buffy, Parker getting his comeuppance. SMG was very funny and did a great job.

Xander: "What did we learn about beer?
CaveBuffy: "Foamy!"

C'mon, that's adorable!

I hated "Where the Wild Things Are", though. Ew. Too much Riley skin. And I never really found SMG especially sexy. I've been reading a Season Four thread on another board I go to, and the general consensus seems to be that when compared with episodes in seasons 6 & 7 (which I haven''t seen), this episode looks a lot better. But IMO, WTWTA is my pick for worst ep of the season. I found "Bad Eggs" more enjoyable.

Beer Bad is better than most episodes in Season 4 as that son of a bitch Riley along with the Initiative aren't mentioned or shown (and if they are, it's for a brief period of time). The second half of season four and first half of season five are barely watchable due to that no talented ass clown and his posse. Thankfully for every few Riley/Initiative-driven episodes, we have a Hush or Restless.

I'd take a Season 1 or 7 episode over a Riley/Initiative episode any day of the week (and I personally love Season 6).

You won't get any argument out of me regarding the Initiative and Season 4, but by the following year, they weren't around anymore. And yes, Riley was still there for the first 10 episodes, but his character changed quite a bit. Hell, I almost(and I stress ALMOST) felt bad when he left in that helicopter.

And to this day, I still love that scene between Riley and Xander at the end of Season 5's The Replacement. I actually felt sympathy for the guy, which never could've happened the previous year.

I was actually almost sad to see Riley leave in season 6 after his breif visit... but I think that's just because I hated everything else there...

But that was season 2, and while it was bad, least we got the Gorch Brothers out of it.

I think it's sad that the Gorch brothers look so good in comparision to the later stuff we got like an evil shark demon. I don't minded the gorches, I think they're funny, but it's sad that they're so great because it has to be compaired to stuff like the shark.

I loved Beer Bad. It was absolutely hilarious!

I loved the 4'th season, and didn't hate any episodes. The best was Hush--an extremely creepy episode overall.

You didn't hate any?

Adam didn't seem out of place...like out of nowhere, like an incredebly lame villian?

Maybe its just me, then.

Adam came out of nowhere because they didn't develop him. He's actually a pretty interesting villian in some ways... but man, lame when you stack him against the first three seasons.

He came out of nowhere because Maggie Walsh had to be written out of the storyline after Lindsay Crouse bailed on them. She would've been a much better Big Bad for the season. Adam had "mini-Bad" written all over him.

That is a very good point. He's be an excellent secondary bad like Luke, or Mr. Trick.

Still, I think Adam could have been saved if they had scrapped the Faith two parter and given him a two parter to make him cool.

I still like him better then Glory or whoever else came after... but he has nothing behind him like say, The Master or Spike or Angelus or The Mayor did... he was just a monster who did some creepy things, had some cool speeches and cut open a kid to see what he was made out of.
