american idol fans po'ed at busy signals

imdb.com
"Some American Idol fans are expressing anger over their inability to register votes during the final three hours of voting last Tuesday, USA Today reported today (Tuesday), noting that "the lost votes might have produced a different result." A Maryland woman told the newspaper: "My daughter dialed more than a hundred times and couldn't get through. ... This is a show we all watch as a family, and I guarantee you we will never watch again. My daughter was in tears." However a 15-year-old from Manhattan Beach, CA said that she used AT&T's text-messaging option and got through immediately. (AT&T said that it supplied 2.5 million votes, about 10 percent of the total and that not a single message was rejected.) The complaints were dismissed by Fox spokesman Scott Grogan, who remarked that "24 million did get through. ... The system worked like it was supposed to."
I'm surprised someone could get all worked up over a tv show.

It's no big secret that the whole voting scheme was designed to get people to sign up for AT&T phones and use the text messaging feature. As we discussed in the previous AI threads, that was where this contest was truly decided.

In this day and age, there's no excuse not to have internet voting...unless you are pimping an advertiser's product. Hmm?

That's just too funny to me. Generic woman vowes never to watch again, meanwhile generic daughter can't dial phone properly and cries.

Was it really important for them to vote considering everyone of the last few Idols were pretty much set to have some sort of record deal regardless of the outcome?

Am I the only one that thinks the winner gets like a $1 million in addition to a recording contract? Wouldn't that be reason enough to want to not only get a recording contract (for being in 2nd place), but the monetary prize as well?

kinda like last year

Kelly's phone line was really busy while Justin's was always free.

That could explain why there was a 58-42 vote for Kelly. She would easily have won with 80-90 percent of the votes otherwise.

and yes the Final 3-4 have a chance of getting a record contract but the winner gets the American Idol status, 1 million $ and a lot more promotion than the other contestants.

Unlike some people say, it's way better to win this competition than to come in 2nd place.

Bear in mind that the votes were tainted by a hacker with an auto-dialer repeatly voting for Kelly.

I guess it's futile to request what data leads you to this conclusion other than OMG.

hmm ok shut up

I'm guessing this because in a lot of polls she was getting at least 75-80 % of the votes.

Forget the AI link (just gives phone directions)... just use the Web form next time
