WB Greenlights Four Comedies, Two Dramas for Fall Schedule
By Brian Ford Sullivan

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) - Coming off its best season to date, the WB will try to up the ante even further next season as the Frog network has greenlighted four new comedies and two new dramas. The pickups come as the WB gets ready to unveil its fall schedule tomorrow morning as part of its upfront presentation to the advertising community.

Here's a night-by-night breakdown of what's on tap for next season:

-- Mondays as expected will remain the Frog's dynamite duo of "7th Heaven" and "Everwood."

-- Tuesdays have "Gilmore Girls" kicking off the night at 8:00/7:00c followed by the Rachael Leigh Cook-led drama "Fearless," which had been a dark horse to make the schedule last week. "One Tree Hill," which had been in competition for the Tuesday, 9:00/8:00c slot, is likely set for a midseason order.

-- Wednesdays see the WB moving its powerhouse "Smallville" to open the night, leading into fellow returning drama "Angel."

-- "Tarzan & Jane," the network's highest-profile pilot, is a go for the Sunday, 9:00/8:00c slot following "Charmed." It is not known as of yet what will air at 7:00/6:00c.

-- While the exact breakdown of the Frog's Thursday and Friday night schedules are not known, its membership however is. Fridays are expected to see "Reba" shift to 8:00/7:00c followed by either "Like Family" or "All About the Andersons" with "Grounded for Life" taking over the 9:00/8:00c slot. "Family" or "Andersons" will then fill out the night at 9:30/8:30c.

-- Thursdays see "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment" returning, likely at 9:30/8:30c, while "What I Like About You" will shift to Thursdays at 8:00/7:00c followed by newcomer "Run of the House." Lastly, the WB's talk/variety show hosted by Steve Harvey is expected to land the 9:00/8:00c slot. Again, these four may be jumbled to different times on the same night.

-- At midseason, in addition to "One Tree Hill," orders are expected to go out to dramas "Other People's Business" and the untitled "Gilmore Girls" spin-off, the latter of which is contigent on finding a showrunner. On the comedy front, "Kid Mayor," "The Help," and "Sixteen to Life" are on the cusp of midseason orders, as is the reality project "Make My Day."

-- Getting the axe then are freshman series "Black Sash," "Do Over," "Family Affair," "On the Spot" and "Greetings from Tucson." "Sash" is already set to burn off its remaining episodes beginning Sunday, May 25.

This article was updated at 11:14 AM with additional information.

I'll definitely check out Fearless - since Smallville is vacating that slot. I'll follow Smallville to Wednesday (although I might have to utilize the Sunday afternoon encore presentation that my local WB affiliate offers). Charmed stays put which earns a from me.

Still mad at the Frog for their treatment of Do Over.

I'm glad What I Like About You got picked up but why couldn't they have just left it in it's old timeslot. I don't see it lasting much longer against Friends

You don't know how happy I am that 24 and Smallville are no longer on at the same time, same night!!

I won't know what to do with myself on Wednesday nights. With Dawson's Creek/Jack & Jill/Felicity gone, so goes my Wednesday night tradition. At least the WB Monday is still intact.

I am also confused why they have to change the night for What I Like About You. Amanda Bynes is a bankable star, the series is funny and enjoyable. Taking Sabrina off that night to Thursday made sense, since the show started to lack quite a bit in quality. For the most part, I see WB's Friday night sitcoms with much more quality than the fare that gets tossed on Thursday. I don't watch Friends, so it's no big deal, I will catch it on Thursday, but Friday was a good night.

What I don't like is Smallville's change. I haven't seen Fox's line up yet, but if this is going to go up against That 70's Show, we're gonna have problems. I can't be home every Wed night to tape one and watch the other.

Why must they make me choose between the West Wing & Angel?

I hope I don't have to choose shows during Tuesday nights...I just stopped watching Buffy since I couldn't choose between the shows offered at 8.

I don't have any real problems with the schedule, although it's sort of a shame that Do Over was cancelled. It never really had a proper chance, though. Wasn't it on at Thursday at 8:30 or something? Too bad...

Hmmmmm....melike the WB super Wednesday line-up.....but wait, me also like the NBC super Wednesday line-up. Damn! VCR will be getting lots of work.

I'm really hoping the GG spin-off doesn't find a show runner, I'd hate for the GG staff to splinter between the two shows.

I sorta hope that WB sticks with the name "Untitled Gilmore Girl Spinoff". It kinda reminds me of "Ethnic Mismatch Comedy #664" a la the Simpsons.

I hope that WB keeps offering the Easyview episode of Smallville as Wednesday nights will make it tough to watch for me since I work.

They are not, which really sucks since I will have a 4-way conflict in the Wednesday 8 pm timeslot.

With season one on DVD relatively close for Smallville, this has got to be the most ignorant move. Granted, I know not everybody will want to own the set, but this is rather lame. So lame they might as well had 7TH HEAVEN: BEGINNINGS. Or just leave Smallville on easy view, that would have worked for me!

The point of Easy View wasn't entirely to make it easier for fans to catch the show, but to pump some possible new viewers for their newer series.

Smallville is one of the WB's top rated shows, it doesn't need the Easyview help anymore. The WB has now put you in the position where you have to view (theoritically in a world where VCR's and TIVO's don't exist.) on Wednesday.
