TV Sucks

Agreed, this is a very generalized statement. But then again, am I the only one who gets really frustrated with:

- Way too many commercials
- Always the same commercials
- All the warnings like "the following program contains blablabla. Viewer discretion is advised"
- Movies being edited for content
- Movies being shown in fullscreen
- Beeping out half of the conversation
- TV news being interrupted by commercials
- TV news being referred to as a "show"
- ...

And this is just criticism about the way things are presented. I haven't even started about contents...

Personally, I now stick to renting movies, and trying to finalize my quest for the best news broadcast (meaning most objective, least chopped up by commercials, and least searching for the spectacular rather than the informational).

Pheww. I feel better already.

LolaRennt.

Groucho 05-08-03 12:28 PM

According to the promos, FoxNews is "fair and balanced" in their reporting. Sounds like they might be the objective source of news you are looking for.

They report, you decide.

NCMojo 05-08-03 12:28 PM

Didn't I catch most of these compaints on Andy Rooney?

"Ya know what I hate? I hate how they show movies that have been edited for content. Doncha hate when they do that? And why do they refer to TV news as 'the show'? Couldn't they just call it 'show' and be done with it???" ;)

Re: commericials...

Get a ReplayTV or TIVO. Except for watching sports live, I don't think I've seen a commercial in months.

1. Get a Tivo/ReplayTV. No more commercials, warnings, or other annoying hype.
2. Get a DVD player. No more edited/fullscreen movies.

Problem solved. ;)

Giles 05-08-03 01:31 PM

All I've been watching as of recently is TCM, Comedy Central and "West Wing", everything else I just don't even bother watching.

calhoun07 05-08-03 02:18 PM

I am just tired of all the reality TV of late, and the truly uninspiring ideas I see for new series coming next year. Right now Everwood, Smallville and That 70's Show are the only three must see shows on TV for me, the rest of it I can take or leave, and there aren't too many other shows I try to catch on a regular basis.

PixyJunket 05-08-03 02:24 PM

Cartoon Network.. nuff siad.

Like most of the most-active folks in this subforum, I watch tons of TV. But no, I'm not frustrated by any of those things because I long ago eliminated them. I only watch quality stuff, as far as I'm concerned, and I don't watch it with ads.

Pheww. I feel better already.
Rant as much as you'd like. That's what we're here for. :)

Add disaster warning logos to the list of annoyances

The local networks in my area are paranoid. The second someone says storm, freaking huge warning logos become pasted on every local channel.. sometimes with huge banners scrolling/utilizing an 8th of the screen. Annoying, annoying, annoying! They also post the time on screen in the middle of shows. Thank goodness I have some distant networks on my satellite TV.. heck of alot more reasonable watching NY or LA television networks.

My TiVo and 30 second skip prevent me from watching most commercials. Amen to that!

Yep same here. I also hate the network logos on the screen. They keep getting bigger and bigger and they stay on the screen for the entire damn show.

Rypro 525 05-08-03 03:23 PM

What I hate more are little ads for other shows at the bottom of the screen. Also hate the really big and annoying station id's. (the abc 7th anniversery was too much. It was hard for me to watch alias since that thing was so annoying.)

What the heck is behind that FoxNews billboard? Is that a giant pastry?

PixyJunket 05-08-03 03:50 PM

Mmmm.. giant pastry..

karnblack 05-08-03 03:50 PM

Yes TV Sucks. That's why I don't watch it.

I have too many other things to do (DVDs, video games, books, magazines, Internet, etc.) that I don't have time to watch TV. I get my news from the radio, Internet, and newspaper.

If you don't watch it, how do you know it sucks ... furthermore, what would prompt you to explore TV Talk?

P.S. I'm not trying to be argumentative ... just curious. The human psyche fascinates me, especially lunatics who don't watch TV. ;)

It's some animal with the body of a zebra and the head of a giant pastry.

Phew.... I was going to say! Now I get it.

Seriously.... it was bothering me so much I had to open it up in PhotoShop and zoom in a few times to figure it out. :hscratch: I guess I have too much time on my hands. :(

Word.

Used to work with a girl who didn't even own a TV. I thought there was a law or something about that...

littlefuzzy 05-08-03 09:34 PM

I have stopped watching most TV, even for shows that I was following. I missed too many shows in the story arc, so I figure I will just catch them on DVD from now on.

If I turn the TV on, then I will sit there and watch for a few hours, even if there isn't anything on. I hardly watch anything anymore, except the Sunday night Fox block (Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, Malcom, Oliver Beene, etc.)

VinVega 05-08-03 10:39 PM

Back in 1961, Chicago lawyer Newton Minow, the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, declared TV was "a vast wasteland."
Couldn't agree more.

There are a few oases in that desert, but in general it's pretty low brow entertainment.

DeputyDave 05-09-03 01:43 AM

Why bother posting in a TV forum if you hate TV so much?

Because I want to find out if I am missing something. Don't get me wrong. I like the concept of the TV, where you can just blisfully spend some moments switching off the brain, and just let the impressions of the various images and sounds come to you.

I just seem to find out that for my personal taste, those images and sounds become gradually more boring. Yesterday, it was too much, and I had to vent a little, for which tv talk is the ideal location, as people give various personal opinions, which is great.

LolaRennt.

NCMojo 05-09-03 11:32 AM

On the subject of TV being boring...

What are you watching? I love shows with action and suspence, like Alias and The Amazing Race, or shows that are laugh-out-loud funny like Friends or Scrubs. If I want to "let the impressions of various images and sounds" come to me, I'll just spend a few minutes staring at my computer screensaver.

Sure, most of what is on TV is boring tripe, but there are exceptions, and that is why we all love TV. There are some truly inventive and innovative programs out there if you can give them a chance. (And if you are not too highfalutin and hoity-toity...)

PS - ya know, wouldn't it be a better world if there were zebras walking around with a giant pastry for a head? What mad scientist's guild do we have to picket to make this dream a reality?

PPS - amazingly enough, yes, that is the way you spell "highfalutin" and "hoity-toity". Who came up with these words, Al Capp?

BenCJedi 05-09-03 12:57 PM

That's why TiVo's are so useful.. eliminate the crap from TV and it is bound to find shows you should enjoy. In theory you will enjoy TV more when everytime you sit down in front of one, there is something that matches your interest to watch.

...that's what drugs are for.

Could also explain why some folks are seeing zebras with giant pastry instead of heads. :)

If too much TV is bad for you then:
Is too much DVD good for you?
Is too much Magazine good for you?
Is too much video game good for you?
Is too much book good for you?
Even is too much money good for you?
And we can go on and on and on...........

Bottom line: Everything in moderation.

As matter of fact, this is one of the great challenges face man kind. The ability to grasp moderation.

Wizdar 05-09-03 03:04 PM

Whenever I grasp my moderation, my wife says I should save it for her.

Pants 05-09-03 04:35 PM

I've completely writen off watching TV. I only watch South Park, the Simpsons, and syndicated Simpsons. About 10 times a year I watch Jeopardy, and sometimes I watch VH-1. And that's it. If cable weren't free at my current appartment I wouldn't have cable. It's not worth the money to me. At my last apartment I didn't have cable. Why spend the money? Considering the quality I value cable TV at being worth $5 a month. When the price drops that far call me.

PeMo 05-09-03 05:35 PM

Pants - how do you know you wouldn't like any shows on TV if you don't watch TV? And how do you know when South Park and the Simpson's are on? And for that matter, how did you know you'd like those two shows, but not other shows, without watching them?

Oh, I thought of another show I watch! I watch the Howard Stern Show on E!

Anyway, in answer to your questions:

My girlfriend watches a lot of TV. From time to time she's made me watch The Bachelor, Survivor, Fear Factor, Dawson's Creek, Charmed, Roswell, and Gillmore Girls and I thought they were all crap.

I've given some sitcoms like Everybody Loves Raymond and Becker a try and thought they sucked.

I know when South Park and The Simpsons are on because of a little invention called a TV Guide.

Overall, yes I give new shows some occassional attention, but mostly their crap and my time would be better spent watching movies.

Wizdar 05-12-03 11:29 AM

Can’t think of a reason for someone who doesn’t watch TV to subscribe to TVGuide. But maybe that’s just me.

I don’t think it’s fair to judge TV based on what your gf makes you watch (perhaps during a heavy B&D session?). I might question her motives. ;)

Sure, most of TV is crap. But there are a lot of good shows out there. I think that many (not necessarily all) of the shows that have regular threads here are deserving of a look-see. And the time spent looking at all of them certainly wouldn’t make you a candidate for a 12-step program.
