DVD Talk Hero
I have to ask why the two "regular" sexes of the species needed to virtually enslave the third. Why not treat them as members of the species with the same rights? (It took the doctor all of about five minutes to confirm that the cogenitors were full-fledged persons just like the males and females.) Why wouldn't the cogenitors voluntarily engage in the propogation of the species when their services are needed as long as they thought they were getting a fair shake in the deal? If the cogenitors do not get as much out of the experience and out of the parenting as the other two sexes, they could be compensated in another ways such as financially. As long as it is all voluntary on the part of all the individuals there's nothing wrong with it. However, the males and females have no right to force the cogenitors to do what they want or to keep them in ignorance and virtual slavery to be used only when "needed." One also can see how the species is hurting itself by narrowing the labor pool in cutting out the potential contributions cogenitors could make in any number of areas.
One would think as advanced and otherwise moral a species as was portrayed in this show would have figured this out by itself. Perhaps the fault lies mainly with the story because it portrays the males and females of the species as having an unlikely moral blind spot (and an unlikely scientific blind spot as well if no one ever figured out what the doctor figured out immediately) regarding the cogenitors. Because otherwise there would not be a story.
