What is the point of WS TV shows?
Why do some shows get created in Widescreen/Letterbox. Whats the friggin point? Considering that people that own WS TVs are still the minority of TV viewers, an excluse that the producers are making the show WS TV compatible isn't realistic. By the time WS TV's are in a the majority of homes, most current shows in WS will have ended production. Movies are fine in WS since screens are that way.
Are producers trying to get some lame 'high quality' feel to their show because it is in WS? For a TV show WS TV does cut out space that could be used for picture.

Add to that DVDs. The future is WS. Better to be off for a few years before everyone has adopted the format than to be stuck with 4:3 for all eternity.

Lets jump in the wayback machine to the 1960s.
Why are tv shows made in color? Most TV's are black and white and people with color tvs are in the minority. By the time color tvs are mainstream these shows will be out of production.
Now lets jump in the wayback machine to the 1980's
Why are tv shows made in stereo? Most TV's are mono and people with stereo tv's are in the minority.
repeat as needed.

Because 24 is just that much cooler in widescreen.

Derrich sums it up pretty darn well.
resinrats -- if you were making a TV show today, why wouldn't you film in widescreen? Presumably, you hope that your show has some life beyond the single network airing (syndication, DVD release, etc.)
If you're going in with the knowledge that the future of TV broadcast is 16x9, why would you film your show in 4x3?

Because they know I have a widescreen TV and network executives like to make me happy.

because (for once in their perverted lives) some network execs can see past the end of their noses and know that
a) widescreen programming drives widescreen TV sales
b) eventual DVD release
c) eventual switchover to WS sets everywhere (check Japan and UK/Europe)
d) future syndication after a) and c) are more common (it's almost impossible to syndicate a B/W show now).

And going back in time...
Why broadcast radio shows? Most people listen to granpaw tell his stories.
Why won't grandpaw shut up about his stories? The court jester is in the town square tonight and most people want to listen to him instead.
Why communicate verbally? Banging on rocks and trees has been effective for most people so far.

But ya, to me, I don't understand why some shows aren't in Widescreen!

The reason why they make widescreen isn't because "they make the screen that way" but because it is a natural format since we perseve everything more horizontally than vertically. It has always been accepted in the theatres but thanks to LD and DVDs it is becoming more and more accepted on the small screen as well. I'm surprised noone has mentioned this yet.
