Highlander the TV series: How is it?

I was in Best Buy and saw that they were selling the complete first season on dvd for pretty cheap. I've always been a fan of the first Highlander movie, and the idea in general was always cool, and was wondering how the series was. I've seen a couple of episodes here and there over the years, but never found out if there was an overall plot to the show or not. Just wondering what other people think of the show and whether it's worth picking up the first, and possibly future, seasons of this show. Thanks!

shaggybrown 03-30-03 03:26 PM

I felt the series was better then all but the first movie. But that is my opinion.

X 03-30-03 03:32 PM

I agree with that.

I got the first season, watched it, and wanted more. The second season is even better.

das Monkey 03-30-03 04:02 PM

I think the idea plays out pretty well as a TV series and is certainly better than all the sequel films. Towards the end, the concept started to wear thin, but I always enjoyed watching it. While I enjoyed the film version as well and consider the soundtrack to be one of the best ever, it always felt rushed. I like the concept better in a series form, and Adrian Paul does a good job in the title role. Worth checking out I think.

CaptainMarvel 03-30-03 06:42 PM

I was a pretty devoted fan of it for a long time.

How cheap was Best Buy selling it?

zuffy 03-30-03 07:22 PM

I enjoy the TV series more. Adrian Paul acts better than Christopher Lambert.

MrBob 03-30-03 09:29 PM

I used to watch the tv series pretty regularly and it was pretty damn entertaining. Didn't really watch the last few years of the series, but the first yearrs were really good. And I've been tempted to buy the series since it can be found pretty cheap.

Darren Garrison 03-30-03 09:30 PM

I, too, liked the series better than 3 out of 4 Highlander movies. Methos= coolest immortal.

GoVegan 03-30-03 11:25 PM

What's the cheapest place to pick this up? DVDPriceSearch has the cheapest price at $51. Is anywhere better than that?

I was kind of hoping that the price would be closer to $30. (This from someone who previously owned the first season on VHS and paid over $100 for it).

Draven 03-31-03 08:48 AM

My wife and I loved the series when we were in college, so we picked up Season 1.

After about 8 episodes it starts getting a whole lot better, but the first few are downright painful to sit through. Horrible dialogue, sped up sword fights, dated clothing, etc. So if you get it, don't give up on it. The first episode is basically just a rehash of some of the major plotpoints from the film, and Richard Moll (Bull from Night Court) is the main villain. Yeah, that's right, Bull.

It gets so much better though. I'm looking forward to the next few seasons.

kenage 03-31-03 04:01 PM

I liked the series much better than the movies. I didn't really watch most of the last season so could anyone tell me how it ended?

KnightLerxst 03-31-03 04:20 PM

Great series. The first 8 or so are rough to watch, but once you get to Band of Brothers...oh yeah...

Seasons 4 and 5 are wonderful...they really should have ended it at 5, the 13 episode season six was a joke except for the final two episodes.

clemente 03-31-03 07:55 PM

The show really hits on all cylinders when the whole cast got in on the deal. For me, any episode with Methos was golden.

Sdallnct 04-02-03 11:38 PM

I watched the Series for a while. Then tried to pick up some in re-runs and just as I started to really get in to it, couldn't find them on TV anymore.

This is one series I'm really thinking about getting.

Wasn't most of the filming done in Europe? Does the DVD's have more content? In other words are these "uncut"? Was the "American" showing different then the Europe showing?

Thanks for the help...

SiberianLlama 04-03-03 04:20 PM

I don't know how different the US vs European shows were, but the ones on the dvd are from the European versions, so they are longer. Pretty sure they are 48 minutes long.

elektra 04-03-03 04:51 PM

I liked this a lot too. I have first season and can't wait for the rest.

Hi das!!!!

I agree with what everyone has said. If you liked the first movie, you'll probably love the series... assuming you can ignore the continuity errors between the two.

Thanks for the info. That may have sealed the deal. Anyone have aprox dates for when the other seasons are coming out?

Now what did I do with that Overstock coupon????

Pharoh 04-03-03 09:03 PM

Just another vote for the series. I liked it better than all of the films. But as others have said, make it through the first half of the set, don't give up on it. There is some terrible acting, but the series really comes into its own. You really see the growth.

I have not heard anything about future seasons yet. It was a minor miracle that Season 1 was given a wide release. But hopefully enough people have bought the set to make future releases imminent. Enjoy!

Good news about future seasons from Anchor Bay:

http://www.anchorbayentertainment.com/future/

HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES - Season Two in July 2003

Following the success of our recent release of the first season of the HIGHLANDER television series, Anchor Bay and Davis/Panzer Productions will be releasing the next season nationwide in July 2003 with the remaining seasons to follow at regular (TBD) intervals after that.

I loved highlander the series...I watched ever episode and cried when they ended it. It was so emotional for me throughout the show. I'm still mad Tessa died! Now I see Adrian doing silly little shows...like charmed..tah!

Scorpio 04-04-03 12:23 AM

BEST SHOW EVER!

tanman 04-04-03 03:28 AM

hay hay hay........

What was the good deal!

What was the price of the set!

did you not realize that it is against DVDTalk ordinance 00:01 to talk about a deal without posting the actual deal.

Even tho I have to admit I got into the whole Highlander thing late, I'm not sure I disagree.

I found a $5.00 off coupon for Overstock.com so that works out to be the best deal I have seen:

Overstock price = 52.99
$5.00 off $50.00 =-5.00
shipping = 2.95
Total SHIPPED = 50.94

Doesn't look like anything special about this deal (in other words I don't think this price or coupon expire any time soon). So might look thru the weekend before ordering.

FWIW, I realize Overstock gets a mixed rating for a store. But I have ordered probably a dozen items from them. And returned 2 items (due to wrong sizes and/or colors). I have never had a problem with them.

Season 2 coming out in July...PERFECT...

Michael Corvin 07-25-03 01:46 PM

Alright Highlander fans I have a question that begs for an answer. I was looking up prices for season 2 and on dvdsoon's website they list 2 versions an R-rated version and a PG-13-rated version. Anyone know the difference?

Face/Off 07-25-03 06:09 PM

I thought the series was far superior to the movies, even the first which I thought was merely average. Of course, saying the TV show is better than Highlander 2 and 3 isn't saying much.

The formula of the bad immortal from the past of-the-week storyline got repetitive, but the TV show still delved deeper into the whole concept of immortals pretty well.

As far as I know there's only one release. If you look at each you'll notice the UPC and catalog numbers are the same.

Michael Corvin 07-26-03 08:56 AM

You are right. It was right there in front of me the whole time. Thanks. I just remember talks of the first season having a nipple slip or something that wasn't broadcast in the US. It piqued my interest wondering if there more differences between here and overseas.

The US release contains the extended European versions of the episodes. Each episode is a few minutes longer. The only nudity I remember seeing was in the first episode of Season 1.

Interesting. I just finally finished season 5 and opened up my season 6 (only through ep 4) and I'm not sure I agree. While I do feel the whole "Evil" plot felt really out of place, I'm actually enjoying the eps I've seen so far this season. There's still flashbacks, and we're actually getting to see a lot more of regular storylines in Macs life. I mean the guy has to have some semi-normal days, no? Not every day is a flashback/run-in to somebody he has met, rigth?

Side note - I looked up the lady from ep 3 (Dara Tomanovich) and looks like she doesn't turn up anymore. :( Shame since she and Adrian had really good chemistry. Would have been good to see her and Amanda run into each other over Mac.

Slayer2005 04-07-07 01:39 PM

Very fun show. It starts off a bit rough early on, but it improves over time. Also, just so ya know, the sword fights improve DRAMATICALLY as the show goes on.

MovieExchange 04-08-07 12:06 PM

Mmmm... nothing like the smell of a 4 year old thread on easter morning...

Anyhow, to add my thoughts to the matter... you could watch seasons 1-3 and have a satisfactory ending to the series, almost as if they thought 3 was the last season. Season 4 is good. Season 5 is hit or miss, many parts of it are pathetic rehashes, but the Methos storyline is good. You can tell Adrian Paul is tired of the series, as he starts sleepwalking through his role. The quickenings become insanely retarded.

Season 6 is a pathetic joke. By this point Adrian Paul isn't even trying to hide the fact that he wants out of the show. Of the 13 episodes, 11 are attempts to introduce new female immortals for the planned "Raven" spinoff. The other two don't even have an appearance by Duncan. One is a test to see if the fans would take to a new husband / wife team as private investigators, and the wife is immortal. The other takes 2 established Highlander characters and throws them together to see if the fans would like to see them continue in a new series (I would have loved it, but I liked both characters to begin with).

btlives 04-08-07 12:58 PM

Just finished watching all of Season 4 this last week.
Its as good as season 3, Maybe a hair better.
Many fans think the 4th is the best of series.

Starting with 1st ep Homeland and weaving
its way thru the some of Darker aspects of series.
Also there is some closure with a few past
story lines. The commentarys are also worth
a spin.

cmleidi 04-08-07 08:08 PM

Seasons Three is my favorite, and season 4 is good, but the last two seasons did nothing for me. Nothing in season six is as engrossing as the backstage documentary features on the HIGHLANDER: RAVEN set.

Jadow 04-08-07 09:30 PM

I always liked the series, a big part of the reason why is that it was mostly filmed in Paris, and I got to see something other than the standard USA locals.

The series started going down hill when they killed a major, motorcycle riding character however...

I think the series would have been better off without Richie. He was a complete moron that should have been killed many times over.

Usual conversation:

Mac: Richie, I'm hundreds of years older than you, I know this person / situation. It's bad news, you should stay back.

Richie: Screw you, Mac, I'll do what I want.

Mac sighs and prepares to save Richie's ass yet again.

Same thing was said about Tessa & Amanda.

In these days of cancel a series 1st and
lets find another later. Its amazing it was
on for 6 seasons. We really see so few
true syndicated series anymore.

Personally I believe all 6 seasons are
worth a spin. With them being on
sale for around $15 each (B1G1 Free)
at times. They are well worth it.

Over the years they have had some solid
guest actors.....And the writing at times
is spot on. Lets just not bring up the
latest movie debacle...

I always found Amanda to be an interesting character and a great companion for Mac.

Tessa, on the other hand, just annoyed me with her constant whining.

Yeah...Its kind of hard to be the lead mortal lover
in an immortals world when a series starts.
You either love her of hate her.
Its too bad, as she is a solid actress.
We just do not see much of her in the states.

Also for the comment about earlier Quickenings.
Season 5 has THE BEST quickening episode IMO.
No spoilage. But its grand.

I also decided to put season 5 on my viewing
list this week. So thanks for digging up this thread.
