Angel -- Cancelled..?
From tvguide.com
THIS BITES: The WB has renewed six of its series for next season -- but unfortunately, Angel isn't one of them. Charmed, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Smallville and Reba have been picked up for the 2003-04 season, while Monday-night staple 7th Heaven received a two-year green light. The network is expected to make a decision on Angel, arguably the WB's best show, in May. |
I bet WB is waiting to see how it performs over the next few weeks before deciding. I don't think it's too big of a shock that Angel wasn't included in this list of renewals.
|
It mentioned in an EW interview that Angel was on the bubble. Whedon was going to propose some kind of big new storyline and if the network was interested, they would renew - if not, Angel was probably over.
|
Son of a ... I swear, WB better pick this up. |
I'd heard it was renewed on tv.... hopefully it will be if it hasn't been.
|
This is because the contract that the WB has with Fox is up this season. It isn't a matter of simply "renewing" Angel... they'd also have to negotiate a new contract. There's nothing saying that they won't do that, but it isn't as trivial as just saying "yeah, we're bringing it back."

Which will have its finale first? Angel or Buffy?
|
I think it makes sense to cancel Angel and Buffy in the same year, the can use the free space to think of that new spin off from Buffy he was talking about

I've been hearing that Angel and Sabrina will get the axe and that WHat I Like About You and Greetings From Tusan are on the borderline.
|
Maybe UPN will pick it up. I know that when they had Buffy, they said that if the WB cancelled Angel, they would pick it up.
Angel on TV does not negate JW and company from doing a new show, spinoff or not. |
Originally posted by nightwing82 I've been hearing that Angel and Sabrina will get the axe and that WHat I Like About You and Greetings From Tusan are on the borderline. as for angel, i've watched 3 episodes and they were good ones. i hope this comes back as i won't have buffy to watch next season. :( |
This isn't news. They've said all along that the decision for renewing Angel wouldn't happen until May.
|
What puzzles me is that Charmed gets renewed, but Angel is on the bubble???
|
Nothing surprising. Looking at the averaged Nielsen ratings for this season on the Futon Critic:
Charmed: 4.65 million Reba: 4.67 million Gilmore Girls: 5.36 million Seventh Heaven: 7.00 million Everwood: 5.25 million Smallville: 6.73 million Versus Angel's 3.59 million viewers. Charmed also gets a boost from the fact that it's working miracles on the WBs Sunday ratings (Sundays are up 92% in the 19-34 demographic from last year). Reba's also their best-rated comedy, so they need it to anchor their Friday lineup, and the ratings are actually up from last year. I don't think it's time to worry yet. I'll start worrying when stuff like What I Like About You or Greetings From Tuscon is getting renewed and Angel isn't. |
This is pretty much non-news.
The headline should read "WB renews all it tops shows!" Those that aren't the six highly rated show will have to wait till May like other shows. I wouldn't get worked up about it. |
Will we know if Angel is axed before or after the season finale?
|
Originally posted by WiccanPagan where is this from? the only one i am nto concerned with is sabrina (what garbage, only reason to watch is punky brewster), the other 3 i watch with a passion. amanda bynes has, arguably, the best comedic sense out of any actress currently on tv. as for angel, i've watched 3 episodes and they were good ones. i hope this comes back as i won't have buffy to watch next season. :( As for Sabrina, I still watch it. She is apparently getting married in the season (perhaps series) finale. And not to Harvey. If it ends that way, bunk to that. |

Well at least the WB did not hang on to the POS that was Birds of Prey. I very much wanted to like that show, but it was so bad.
It would be nice to see Angel go another season or two, if the stories and writing stays strong. |
Originally posted by bboisvert Aside from the fact that Charmed has higher ratings, I again point out that the contract for Angel between WB and Fox is up this season. It needs to be renegotiated. The WB can't just "renew" the show -- they don't own the rights to the next season. They have to work with Fox to figure that out. (Which they apparently plan to do in May.) if the series does continue and we know that buffy is ending will any of the buffy characters port over? just a thought. |
It certainly sounds like they're planning on a fifth season.
Here's an interview with David Greenwalt, where he mentions what they have planned for season five. "I give 'Angel' a better than 50/50 chance of coming back next year. I think it has a pretty good shot." http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?30750 |
thanks for the warning josh, for that reason i won't read the article. but great news on the show coming back. just for the sake of drinking. :)
|
After reading what they have planned for Angel, I think it might be best to yank it afterall. :(
No spoilers, but they seem to be taking the route of Buffy Season Six, which aside from the musical and the last three eps of the season, was a total loss for the most part. |
Dr. DVD - I didn't get the same feeling from that article, but I'm not sure how much I'll like the changes. It's nice to see Andy Hallett part of the regular cast. That was one move I was hoping for.
