ABC is Getting What it Deserves
I've been a pretty vocal critic of ABC for a number of years because of the way they treat so many of their better shows (from China Beach in the early 90's to Once and Again). At this point in time, their programming is so bad (Are You Hot?) that I rarely if ever turn them on.
Well, evidently a lot of other people feel the same way. Daily Variety does their ratings grids by the 1/2 hour (i.e., you can see the rating of a show during each 1/2 hour that it is on). Last week, ABC was the top rated network for exactly 1/2 hour. They were the most watched from 9:00 to 9:30 last Friday night during the fourth half hour of America's Funniest Home Videos. Ah, it tastes so sweet. :) |
You know what they need? 4 nights of Who Wants to be Millionaire? So much better than Sports Night or Once & Again. das |
if not for ALIAS i would never watch abc.
|
I watch ABC twice a week: "Alias" on Sundays, and "Less than Perfect" on Tuesdays. I don't care about the rest of the lineup, except I once caught "The Family" which was rather interesting.
They really are the loser network. It'd be sad, but I wouldn't be suprised if one day the PAX network gets better ratings than ABC. |
Dragnet and the Practice are all I watch now on ABC
|
Always Behind the Competition... doesn't surprise me. Perhaps they displeased Thespis?
|
Alias & NYPD Blue for me..
On a totally unrelated [but relevant] note..apparently ABC was caught off-guard when the war started..Their cornerstone reporter Peter Jennings was nowhere to be found once the war started on Wednesday. Rather was on CBS & Brokaw was on NBC. ABC then decided to stop at 11p [est] to allow local stations to air their coverage...unfortunately, they forgot to let them know this..which caused some stations to air a black screen while they scrambled to put something together.. Of course, now they're overcompensating for it by airing NONSTOP coverage..-rolleyes- |

So Thespis is the Roman god of theatre? That's exactly right ... except he's not Roman and he's not a god. das |
A few weeks ago when the overall's came out their highest rated program, My Wife and Kids, was 36th overall. They even finished behind Fox overall last week.
The good news is they're running out of ideas for reality shows, the ratings for the Family, Are You Hot, and I'm a celeb, get me out of here were all terrible. And they have nothing in terms of Drama and Comedy, except for Tuesday, that they've developed and stuck by. Dragnet has been a disappointment ratings wise and thanks to ABC putting it where it is they may have saved Boomtown. I wonder how much longer before we get 4 night's a week of the Bachelor since that's their only show that draws. |
ABC? Aren't they the network that cancelled Twin Peaks, China Beach, and thirtysomething all the same season? Damn them to hell, that's what I say.
|
I'm with you on the critism of China Beach and even Thirtysomething.
They didnt learn their lesson with the Millionaire thing a few years back, scheduling the show so many times a week that it backfired on them and it looks like the same thing is happening now with the Reality show thing. I dont watch ABC accept with Alias and Miracles is on. |
I watch Alias without fail. I used to watch the weekly repeats of Less than Perfect and Life with Bonnie on ABC Family until the inexplicably stopped repurposing. I really enjoyed both of them but unfortunately they are on at the same time as 24 and I only have 1 TiVo.
|
I watch Alias, Dragnet, and the tuesday night comedies. That's all I watch on ABC.
|
ABC is still airing programs.... ;)
|
I just realized...there are no shows I watch on ABC. The best thing they've had in the last year or so was when they showed reruns of "Monk."
|
I watch Dragnet....and that's it. And that's the first thing they've had on that I've liked since Sports Night was cancelled (which was really stupid).
|
abc has decent sitcoms tuesday and wednesday. tuesdays i tape both according to jim and 8 simple rules, and on wednesday it is my wife and kids and george lopez (possibly the funniest sitcom on today).

Remember, Disney owns ABC. That's why.

you mean di$ney :)

And I can't say I've been impressed with any of our programming lately. But I'm guessing the are you hot and other reality shows must be so cheap to produce that even if we're last, we're still doing ok...?
|
The last show ABC had that I liked (after Twin Peaks) was Home Improvement. I know they have Alias, and it's getting rave reviews from fans and critics alike, but I will only watch that show on DVD. The reason is I ignored it when it came out because it was on ABC, and I just haven't paid attention to that network in a long, long time. The last show I tried watching on there was Rules for Dating My Daughter, based on fan reactions to the show, but I found it to be so trite, such regurgitated crap from past sitcoms of greater value, that I didn't even finish the episode, and I haven't been back yet.

I only watch 8 Simple Rules

Could someone please explain to me what is so creative about adding an "$" in Disney? I mean, is it wrong for a corporation to actually try and make the money necessay to sustain itself?
|
mee2: i feel it is wrong for a company to try to make money with little to no regard for their audience. they edit films under their other studios, including anime, hong kong films, and even their own animated features. i feel if they treated their audiences better money would not be a factor into people liking them or not. you can see an instance of their editing in the upcoming release of wfrr. compare the trailer or the tv spots to the film where baby herman goes under a woman's skirt near the begining.

My Wife and Kids

I watch Miracles, MNF if it's a good game and cos of Madden and The Mole, and The Family if I remember.
I dunno if ABC "getting what it deserves." I think that they rode the Millionaire show too hard but if I had a cheap winner, I would hammer my competition with it as well. They knew the show would never have legs but it died faster than they thought and never "fostered" any shows around it. I think that ABC resembles Fox in the sense that in the past, they developed quality shows that not many people watched (ABC - The Job, Cupid, Sports Night, Once and Again) to (Fox's Any Ricther, Greg the Bunny, Action, etc). It took 2 hits for Fox - Joe Millionaire and American Idol 2 for Fox to go from dead to competing for first and first in demos. Networks are cyclical. That is why they replace their network Presidents ever few years. ABC will be back. It's just a matter of timing and getting lucky with one or two shows. Remember, also, they have the Superbowl ever three or so years and the NBA ... "plus the "synergy" of Disney and ESPN so I wouldn't count out the Mouse. |

Perhaps [like WP suggested] they need to look at both the "Joe Six Pack" crowd AND the collectors and try to find some middle ground.. Though, I don't see it happening anytime soon unfortunately.. And..what does Disneyland have to do with anything..? |
disneyland (or di$neyland if you wish) is one of the most expensive (read incredibly overpriced places) in the world. while i don't think people most people think about disneyland prices when using money as a factor in disney's status (i don't think most people think about $ at all when using it in place of the s ;)), it is still valid seeing as it is easily as if not more annoying than their dvd/film practices.
|
So what are they doing Monday night? They advertised 2 hours of the Practice starting at 8 CST, but tvguide and their own website say Miracles will be on at 9 CST.
|
I can't remember the last time I watched a series on ABC. I might have picked up a sports broadcast but other than that I just skip right past the station. I doesn't help that the local ABC affiliate never bothered to make the switch to broadcasting in stereo.
|
I don't watch ABC cause my local ABC station repeatingly denied a waiver request for receiving the distant NY and LA ABC stations on my dish. And out of all my local stations, ABC gets the worst reception in my apartment dwelling. I dunno why they are so deny-happy on waiver requests here. Maybe because their programming isn't any good and they need every last cent from their local advertisers? Well I can't watch it in any, way, shape or form thanks to the waiver denial (well that's not true anymore.. Dish Network recently added local channels on the dish for my area, but I am sticking to the ones I waived for a variety of reasons).

ABC actually started to have a hit with the second season of The Mole...so what did they do? Change hosts and recast it with celebrities.
Brilliant. |

musta thought so enough to say so twice. :)

Originally posted by Rypro PG-13 I thought the second season tanked miserably, so thats why they wanted to do celebirties this season. As for the host thing, they had to get a replacement, since Anderson Cooper was under contract with CNN's American Morning and CNN wouldn't allow him to take time off to do the show. The celebrity thing was rather stupid, though. Still very entertaining, but stupid. |
The only thing I watch on ABC is football. All of their shows are horrible. I know I should watch the George Lopez show to support having a Latino themed show on tv, but I don't think it's that funny.
