It's a double standard, that's what it is. And it pisses me off. I want to see female ass, not man ass!

Charlotte Ross, Amy Brenneman, Kim Delany, and Sharon Lawrence have all bared their bottoms for the cameras on NYPB Blue.

I grew up in Ireland, where television is not censored. But they are responsible about it - they're not going to show "Trainspotting" uncut at 4 o'clock in the day. After nine or ten o'clock, then you can start skewing toward the more risque stuff - which is good, because a)it minimizes the demographic you're aiming for, so you don't have to generalize the content, and b)a film or TV show isn't hindered by harsh restrictions in its storytelling.
The problem with American TV is that stuff like "Friends", if there were no "moral objection" standards, would push the limits as much as possible. Also, some shows would spring up DEPENDANT on nudity and swearing, and that's just poor trashy entertainment. Let's not forget how TNT wants a version of a film that they can run just as easily at 4 pm as it can at 9 pm. But can a 9 pm/10 pm "watershed", as it is called, be enforced on american TV? No - different time zones. If indeed they relax the standards, I hope they're responsible about what they'll put on TV. But I know they won't be. |
The FCC and the American public in general are a bunch of p*****. The British television guidelines are much more lenient and show movies and television shows with much more adult content than our US counterparts. Even the extremely addictive "Johnny Vaugh" talkshow is quite explicit in the language. It was great to see Colin Farrell much more relaxed on Johnny's show and just say whatever the **** he wanted to. :D

I wish they would go the oppisite direction and take away more violence, cursing & nudity/sex.
TV is getting to the point where I am going to just get rid of it. When will it stop? Do we have to see everything on public TV? |

Regarding entertainment reality shows, I could do without it..but I have no problem with shows like NYPD Blue & 24 where these things aren't done strictly for SHOCK value/ratings. |
Anyone noticed that on the first season of 24 they got away with saying "assh*le" without a bleep (it was when Jack was with the female officer around 4-5 am

i'm with the_dvd_man on this one. as donnachaone posted above, american tv would capitalize on this new found appreciation for less censorship with shows that are solely devoted to this filth and it would be used inappropriately to bring in the numbers.
if there was a way to assure that it was used tastefully i would be all for it. |
Originally posted by tha_dvd_man Are you kidding? Exactly what problem would you have with swearing and the occasional nipple/ass/etc. if it were used appropriately? Sure it's obnoxious when it's used for shock value, but when used appropriately it makes the program or movie more realistic and believable. I have no problem with shows that are some reflection on reality actually doing so. And for crissakes, I can't imagine how you would be for any more censorship in movies shown on network television. Sometimes it's just downright ridiculous how much gets censored/cut out, especially considering what doesn't get cut out sometimes. Why do we need more violence, 4 letter words and nipples. Go rent/buy a movie if you want to see it that kind of stuff. I do censor what my kids (8 and 11) see because I care about what goes into their minds. And don't tell me you believe an 8 or 11 year old watching a man and a woman getting it on won't effect them. My question is when will it stop. Do we have to have a Playboy like channel on during the dinner hour or on Saturday morning, and all for free. How about an uncensored death channel? How about a cursing channel? If peopel want this kind of stuff it is out there to Rent/Buy on DVD or you can pay for it on cable. |
Also I wish they would have one guide line for music on the radio as well. Why can ac/dc say "I've got big balls, and everybody cums and cums again" and pink floyd say "bull sh*t" uncut but we can't say "anthrax"?

Bull sh*t is SUPPOSED to be edited out...It's Program Directors at stations "pushing the envelope". You see, with the FCC someone has to complain to make them jump in. i.e. HOWARD STERN. He had many people calling the FCC and that's why he got "Crucified" by them. I 've radio programs from Florida where they get away with just about everything. Women masturbating live on air moans and all, GRAPHIC descriptions of oral and anal sex, and other normally "verboten" subject matter. The difference being they're not HIGH PROFILE like Stern. |
Its in the song "Money" and every station I have heard it on, its uncut. Same with "oh $hit" at the begining of "down with the sickness" by disturbed.

I think it’s important that we can differentiate:
-Language -Violence _Sexual Activity (Can we?) |

I'd like to chime in and say this is one of the reasons I've been enjoying "The Shield" so much on FX.
The swearing is not excessive, but it seems natural. In some workplaces, there is a LOT of swearing (I did two years a television station...you wanna talk about swearing...) The violence is realistic, but rarely strikes me as "shock value" only. It always fits into the story. I can't quite put my finger on it. They really just seem to know how to do it so it doesn't come across as cheesy or an attempt to boost ratings. |
