The Music Man on ABC
IMHO, The Music Man is the greatest musical ever penned by the God-inspired hand of man. And Robert Preston’s performance is something which will never be equaled.
Why, oh why, would anybody be STOOPID enough to try a remake of this classic? OK, granted Disney has a mandate to never use original material. But, still, there has to be something out there more worthy of their plagiarizing talents.
I heard a commercial for it on the radio this morning. Matthew Broderick, it appears, can’t sing. Big surprise.
Anybody gonna watch this? If I watch it, do you think it would be a good idea to put away anything that might be used as a damaging projectile against my TV?
Let’s see. “Enterprise” rerun. The Music Man. My Academy copy of The Two Towers. Tough choice…

I think I heard that Sci-Fi is airing a 90210 marathon. I'll probably watch that.

Disney has a lousy track record (quality-wise) with these bland TV remakes of old musicals... Bland Matthew Broderick in the lead isn't going to help much. The rest of the cast looks pretty bland as well. I'm thinking it'll be bland.

It has numbers in it's title- it must be sci-fi.Oh, and no I won't be watching The Music Man, I'll be too busy complaining about having a week with no Alias.

Disney did a decent job on Annie years ago, but I agree with Wizdar that to screw with Robert Preston is just plain wrong. There is nothing wrong with the original Music Man that Matthew Broderick can improve upon. Nothing personal, Matt.....
My 11 yr old expressed interest in watching it, but I said if Music Man is going to be watched, it's the original or nothing (which she obviously didn't know existed). Plus, we'll be watching The Simpsons anyways.......

It just shows to go ya how quotes from a review can be used/misused. You picked “delightful, breezily nostalgic remake” while the cynic in me spotted “underwhelming rendition.” But I pretty much agree with Roush’s reviews and just may give it a look.
The Entertainment Weekly link doesn’t seem to want to open any time today, in spite of a T1 connection.

Huh, how 'bout that. I just did a quick scan of the TVGuide review and that's what my eyes settled on. Didn't see the "underwhelming rendition".
Guess even the Battlefield Earths of the world can find a good review if they dig deep enough.

I wouldn’t say suffering, although I extremely dislike Broderick’s “singing” voice.
I was “underwhelmed.” This was an almost carbon copy of the original with nothing new to offer (save for a new song that totally did not fit). And the carbon paper they used was quite worn, all in all leaving us with a so-so performance.
I think Mister Beefhead has the answer to my question of why did they do this. If you’ve never seen the original, then I guess this could be considered OK.
