Mods, can we get a policy/guideline instituted so that thread creation for new episodes should only be created on the air date of the episode, and not any sooner.

To have threads created 2 days in advance or earlier, and then expect people to go searching for 2, 3, 4 day old threads is getting not only impractical, but just a big PITA.

People are doing it to try and one up each other.

We need to do something about it. Everyone flames me for starting a thread at 8 A.M. the day of the show and Patman you started the 24 thread at 5 A.M. looks like you are trying to do a BigJim25 impression. How about a 24 hour guideline. Threads need to be posted only 24 hours in advance. I have never started a thread more than 24 hours before the show. Everyone is getting really hateful about this. Let's do something about it.

At least Patman's had a bit of substance to it, since he briefly discussed some of the content of the show. I find that some people who start threads early do it for absolutely no reason, aside from saying "Welcome to the thread, post comments here". Are these people trying to up their post count, or do they get some kind of kick of seeing their names as the author of threads? I cannot see any other reason for it.

I don't think that the 24 hour thing would do much, since these same people would probably watch the clock until 24 hours before the show to start a thread again.

And here I was just about to start a thread on Survivor: Mars.

I guess some people do get a kick out of it. I just started the threads to get some conversation about the show posted. You start the conversation and get substance. It also tells people that there is a new show on tonight. I just started them to start the conversation and maybe get some spoilers and have people say looks like a good episode tonight or man I have a night class and have to tape it. Also you could be nice and wait to post Buffy episode recaps on Tuesday when everybody else watches it. It is just too tempting not to look at it.

I just started them early to give you guys aheads up about them being back on with new episodes this week. I don't see why everyone is getting their panties in a wad for. Some folks don't have Tivo and have to use a VCR to program these shows. Again, as started before in another thread I did use the spoiler tags so you don't have to read if you don't want.

Nice to wait? It is not like someone accidently comes across the post. I clearly mark the date of the show when it is shown in the US, even though I see it before that, and when I discuss spoilers, I use tags. People's lack of willpower is their own problem.

I said something about this a few months ago when it started, but people got mad at me, so I dropped it.

But it is getting kind of silly. I don't think we need any hard rule if people could just be reasonable about it. Patman has a legitimate gripe. When you have to search for the thread for an episode that's currently being televised, it was started too early. We're just not active enough here in TV Talk for new episode threads to be pushed off the front page.

As for "flaming," I've seen a lot of requests for you to stop doing it, but I haven't seen any flames.

It would suck to have to get a mod to set some rule on exactly when a thread can be started, but if we can't be more reasonable about it, that may be where we're heading.

Why is this a problem?

I've never had any trouble finding the thread for a show I wanted to discuss. If it's not on the first page it's probably on the second.

As long as it isn't weeks in advance, I have no problems with the threads starting a few days early.

I read a "Buffy" board where half the people watch the wildfeeds for the show and post threads 3-4 days in advance.

Seems like a really minor gripe.

I guess I started the whole early thread thing when I joined. I only posted the day of the show. I will now put more "substance" into the threads. If you post the day of the show even if it is 12:01A.M. it lets some people know that there is a new show by starting it early. As for flaming i don't mean like cussing. There has been a few snide remarks (lwhy? impression) and the whole lwhere? thread that pissed me off for a couple of days. I think I should just stop posting here and leave if it is that much of a problem to get everyone riled up about.

I like that for the most part, but I can see where others are coming from. There are times when a "reminder" thread is helpful, especially around the holidays when shows go on hiatus or appear in wacky timeslots. We wouldn't want to hinder that with any thread-creation rules.

My main concern would be that there's a solid reason for creating a thread. Creating them just for the sake of doing it is what appears to be annoying people. This is the kind of thing I would expect we could handle without an official rule.

OK, let's use the suggestions above and do it this way: the earliest you can create a thread is 24 hours in advance. I think that sounds fair.

HOW ABOUT
We have a sticky at the top where people can post (1 post) about whether a certain show will be new this week (and a brief synopsis or fun fact or guest star or whatever), then like huzefa said, the "Actual" show thread can be started only after the show has been seen by somebody

the posts in the sticky can be deleted responsibly by the poster sometime after the show has aired and it will be like release dates for DVD's, movies, and CD's in the respective other forums.

If that made sense to you then my work here is done.
Personally I would like us just to be able to create threads in a timely, civilized and mature manner, but if that cannot happen this may actually be a nice way to correct the problem, and give a quick reference to us avid TV watchers

I was going to post about another trend: threads are starting to cover multiple episodes. Looks at "Joe Millionaire" or "Celebrity Mole." Both of those contain discussion on the first two episodes of each show.

It doesn't bother me, it was just something I noticed.

Most shows are beamed to the stations a few days in advance. There are people that can receive them as well. Then they encode them and people download em.
