Those who fear "Suggestions" (not "Recommendations"), are simply ignorant of how they work. They WILL NOT delete something you've recorded to make room for a suggestion; they WILL NOT interrupt your viewing of live TV to go record a suggestion (who watches live TV with a Tivo anyway?); they WILL record things you like based on your past recordings (only when there is room to do so, and only when you are not watching the tuner). Suggestions take a couple of weeks to "learn" what you like, so whatever you get a day after plugging it in is no indication of anything, other than a newborn AI trying to help you the only way it knows how. There is NO REASON to deactivate suggestions (unless you are severely anal-retentive), as they do not interfere with the way you use Tivo at all, and can only help you (with a selection of programs it has recorded which you just might like). Depending on your HD size, there is always likely to be a gem or two in the suggestions list. Also, as stated, it helps you figure out how much space you have left on your drive.

Tivo rules, there's no two ways about it.

they have to interrupt live tv. since tivo is always recording whatever is on, it doesnt know if youre watching or not. i can assume since there have been no remote pushes in 5 hours you aint watching, but that might not be true

Exactly how it works, I believe. Not sure what the actual time limit is, though.

You mean it doesn't warn you when it's about to record something?

Replay Tv has a banner that pops up that says "Show X will beging recording in 30 seconds" so that way you can hit stop to cancel it if you're watching something else or know it's a repeat or something.

Replay TV also only records shows you tell it to. I don't think I'd like that "recomendation" feature Tivo has. Just from using Amazon or Netflix recommendations I have found that computers aren't very good at judging my taste. Plus I have enough shows for it to record I don't need it grabbing any more.

I have an older one too - a Panasonic HS2000. Bought it off ubid.com 1 year ago pretty cheap. I love it.

I'm holding off buying another one for now although the prices are really coming down. I want to see if my cable company starts rolling out PVR digital cable boxes as I have seen in other markets.

My former roommate had 2 TIVOs - there was no rhyme or reason to the suggestions that TIVO recorded for him. It was recording stuff off Univision for crying out loud and the only word my roommate knew in Spanish was 'tequila.'

Adam- Thanks for the advice and link. And I'm with you, I would much rather have a 30 second fast forward. I'll have to try them out after work tonight.

Thanks again.

I just turned the recommendations off first thing after getting my TiVo set up.

Haven't had a single problem in the 2 years since.

Amen. Bad recommendations are due to poor "Thumbs" management.

I also disabled the suggestions, as it was annoying more than anything and it sure filled up my meagre 35hr directivo fast.

I was then never certain if it really deleted those first, or my own recordings which were not set to never delete.

I still love my tivo though.
I have a solution for this.. load up a ton of season passes.. even with the suggestions on, your TiVo will be so busy recording, it won't have room for suggestions. That's how it works for me anyway. I still have saved programs from 3 years ago on mine.

I have not used suggestions in a long time, but I believe you do receive a warning before it changes channels.

Even if you turn off Suggestions, you have the option of viewing the list to see what TiVo thinks you might like to watch/record based on your thumbs up and thumbs down ratings.

Why is this always such a big deal? If you don't like the recommendations, turn them off. How simple is that?

Yes, it warns you anytime it's going to change the channel to record ANYTHING, be it something you requested to be recorded or a suggestion.

I don't understand why this is such a big deal either... the recommeneded shows being taped never supercede anything you request to be recorded, and they are the first things deleted if the TiVo needs space. I've discovered quite a few shows through recommendations, and if you don't like what it's tapes, it takes two button presses to delete them, or just leave them alone and they'll be overwritten eventually....what's the big deal?

TiVo has been in the news recently with inaccurate/misformed Fox News stories and a TechTV review:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,72464,00.html

http://www.techtv.com/freshgear/prod...407581,00.html

These inaccurate stories/reviews have sparked discussions on the TiVo forums.
