Gladiator on ABC Nov 1st
I just saw a commercial during Monday night football. The voiceover mentioned "all new scenes" so they must be inserting the deleted scenes to cover all the cuts for bloody violence.

its probably the dvd deleted scenes now in the movie. this is really gonna be poor since
a. you can not watch this movie in pan and scan
b. the violence will be toned down to death
c. those scenes (if from the dvd) were not that good anyway.

Don't forget, this is going to be shown in HD. I can stand the commercials for the HD.

that scene with people getting fed to lions was horrible. it looked like the cute little lion was just playing around.

Breaking News: ABC has cut so much of out of Gladiator that they have decided to give a new title as well, to reflect the "kinder, gentler" version of the film: Gladiola.

Really. I tuned in just to check out the opening battle scene to see if they edited it very much.Holy Carp!! They, (no pun intended) Chopped it to bits!!!
Some scenes were so badly edited that they didn't even make any sense.
You would see a guy fighting then all of a sudden he was down or gone.
What happened to him?
They edited out the violent scene, that's what.
This was a joke.

I hear no one did. I read that America's Funniest Home Videos (the show that is usually in the Friday night spot) got better ratings last week than this did. In other words ABC usually does better in the time spot with America's Funniest, and they lost ratings by showing Gladiator. Damn that movie sucks, best picture winner and people are already over it.

The older crowd aren't really into Gladiator but LOVE America's funniest home videos.

Anyone catch this again on ABC last night? I thought it looked much better than my Gladiator DVD, there seemed to be just a little bit less film grain (from when I saw it on the big screen a few years ago). And, it was in OAR! Kudos for whoever got ABC to show it in OAR, and not simply crop it to fit into a 16x9 space.
I hated the edits done to the arene battle scenes, though. Totally watered down the action.

I finally saw the movie for the first time when it came on ABC in November. So when they said never before scenes or deleted scenes I had no idea what scenes were never shown in the theatre. So I saw the movie again last night and I noticed it was 3 hours long. I guess ABC showed the theatrical versuin because they didn't show the part of Commodus hitting the statue of his father with the sword. Overall the movie was good. But I wish I had a transcrit of the movie because the actors' British, Australian and/or Irish accents were so strong that I kind of had a hard time to understand them when they were talking.

OAR = Original Aspect Ratio.
In HDTV broadcasts, the native aspect ratio is 1.78 (16x9), but for many of ABC's HDTV broadcasts, they take films with wider ARs, and just crop the sides so that you have the entire 16x9 HDTV picture area filled with video, but you are sacrificing the directorial intent when the film's aspect ratio is 2.35:1 (which is the AR for Gladiator).

OAR is also an album by Skip Spence

I saw a little bit of this movie on ABC, but the edits to the fight scenes were too much for me. If they edited those, what else would they edit? And besides, I have the movie on DVD.
