Boston Public 10/21/02 "Chapter 45"

What a downer of a show. Virtually none of its trademark humor (except for a pathetic piece from Harvey), a weak and predictable storyline with Senate, and the continuation of the escalation of the war between Danny and Marla. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like either one of them anymore. The one saving grace of the show was
Spoiler:
the riot at the end, and that was only for a couple of seconds.

I want to see how this plays out next week. I wouldn't be surprised if it leads to the
Spoiler:
expulsion of Harper's daughter, since she is rumoured to be leaving.

When next weeks scenes were shown Goober told the students that he will find out who started the riot.

Hello! You did, you idiot!

The chick from All That as the young prostitute is hot, but that was sick of her dad to do that.

Venusian 10-21-02 08:28 PM

you knew there would be problems when Guber started telling the jocks to show up at the walk out.

they didn't even mention lauren's leaving and didnt explain louisa's. it'll probably be a few episodes before the new characters are introduced properly and all. Its still a really good show

freedexter 10-21-02 11:00 PM

I still hate how they refuse to wrap up storylines. I'm not happy that characters left and are still leaving, but the very least the writers/producers/whatever can do is explain things. We just jump into October, assuming this show is parallel to our real time, and the end of the year from June was ignored, and they'll probably never address it.

The riot was just downright stupid. The previews spoiled the whole thing, and the scene just made teenagers look bad. It's almost offensive the way they protrayed people. I realize it shows a bit of realism, but I just found it to show teenagers in a bad light. Geez!

It is sort of interesting to see former childstars pick up new jobs. The girl from "So Weird" is now Louisa's replacement, and Joey whatshisface is now a teacher. Good for them, I suppose.

I'm irritated that Brooke is now a full cast member. She wasn't that good last year, and now she'll probably be used more often in the storylines. The cast is getting a bit bloated, and some very good actors are being pushed back. It sort of explains why people left, but still, something has to be done, or the teachers and students will be coming in and out like a revolving door.

any1 else feel like the whole purpose for the riot episode nonsense was so they had an excuse to play that POD song?

i was wondering about that. did they just decide to leave the show to pursue other things?

pretty predictable show. but i bet those three kids that started the walkout feel pretty bad now. all that money that they wanted to make classroom sizes smaller will now go towards rebuilding their school. dummies.

The actress who played Lauren left because she was being placed in the background while Jeri Ryan got all the "good storylines", so to say. I don't know why the actress who played Louisa left, but she was also underused, so perhaps she left for the same reason.

We now have not one, not two, not three, but four, count 'em, four smart-aleck, do-gooder, young male teachers. Did we really need two separate he's-a-student-NO-WAIT-he's-really-a-teacher introductions? These plots are going to be so interchangeable, it will make your head swim.

movieking 10-22-02 07:25 AM

It was strange that Harry and Lauren got tossed to the background for the second season, after being the main characters for the first season. I am wondering if Ronnie and Danny get put into the background this season, as they were the leads last season, IMO. I really don't think that this show has the creative chops to last another season, but quality doesn't dictate success, ratings do, so as long as they hold their own on Monday night, they will be around.

And will someone please get Harry to a barber?

Michael T Hudson 10-22-02 08:24 AM

Harry does need a haircut. :) You are right. My wife said because he was in the Hospital he could not get to the shop. :)

Patman 10-22-02 08:32 AM

The whole "Marla-Danny" thing is just disturbing, just give into the jungle fever and let them go at it! :D

I thought overall, it was a below average season opener.

das Monkey 10-22-02 08:34 AM

Dark Harry needs the hair for his "image." Boston Public has never been good enough to take seriously as a drama, but the off-the-wall comments from the teachers and humorous moments made the show entertaining enough to put up with its tiresome plots. If they're going to pull back on the "funny" and replace hot chicks with more young male clones, then grab your life preservers.

Monday 8-9 is a pretty weak timeslot overall, so they can probably drag this out for years.

What is up with that hair???

what a SNAFU

LOL

Roto 10-22-02 09:57 AM

As long as Marilyn is around it's gonna be hard for me to not at least take a peek at this show, but if they keep changing teachers like this I'm dropping out of Winslow!

If this show didn't steal all its plots from newspaper headlines I wouldn't believe that a legitimate student walkout would ever be possible in a high school. The only reason most high school kids would walk out would be to skip class, and the high school band would NOT march through the hall in their underwear. What was that about?! No wonder there was a riot!

I don't care if they never explain why Louisa left. She probably got tired of singing all the time. If Harry Senate leaves or loses his sense of humor, then I'm done with this show. They need more Senate vs Guber fights. Ahh the good ol days (even though him getting away with firing the gun WAS way too much)

movieking 10-22-02 10:17 AM

Spoiler:
Spoiler:
Harry Senate leaves after 5 episodes, I believe.
I could be wrong, if anyone wants to correct me.

Jadzia 10-22-02 10:35 AM

Harry and Ronnie have zero chemistry together. I liked him much better with Lauren. His hair sucks, but it looked bad last season as well.

I agree on the two new teachers being too similar. The look alike and act alike, except one is shorter. The only two teachers at that school that even look like real teachers are Marla and Lipschultz.

Glad hook-lady is gone.

Interesting. November is Sweeps month. Maybe
Spoiler:
Harry will become so despondent that he blows his brains out
How about that for ratings!!!

Alyoshka 10-22-02 12:09 PM

I'm a huge fan of the show, but was terribly let down by this episode. Most of it seemed pretty unbelievable and the show just rested on themes that it has been recylcling for the past two seasons.

Gee,
Spoiler:
A teen gives birth in the restroom and leaves the baby.
How original....

Seriously - Law & Order ripped this one from the headlines 5 years ago.

I believe you are correct. I read that somewhere when the other two actresses were reported as departing the cast.
Spoiler:
(Also, not that it means anything ACCURATE, IMDb lists Nicky Katt's character from 2000-2002... meaning he'll be gone by Christmas.)

I wonder if he'll quickly dump Ronnie and run off with Dana Poole at the last minute.

They went one step futher, as the two new male teachers even look the same.

The Picket Fences Syndrome. Happens to his work after a while.

immortal_zeus 10-22-02 02:33 PM

The season opener was a let down, but I'm still a fan of the show.

I think Joey McIntyre will be a good addition to the cast. At least he has a real Bostonian accent. The other new male teacher is annoying already. :thmbsdwn:

Brooke Harper is irritating. I liked her in the very first episode she appeared in and I thought she had a pretty good acting range, but her schtick quickly lost its appeal.

It's interesting how Harry has changed so drastically. Surely he can't be so much of a dumbass that he didn't realize Trina was prostituting herself when he offered to give her a ride. I'm guessing that the change in hairstyle is on purpose since his character is darker and more confused than before.

Speaking of Trina....man, that's some sick stuff. Her own dad pimping her?

What's up with the girl delivering a baby in the bathroom? And she said that she only knew she was pregnant like 2 months ago? WTF!?! How much of a dumbass do you have to be to not get your period for 7 months and then finally realize that you're pregnant? Assuming she went the full 9 months, that is. And how could nobody recognize that she was pregnant? The mental image of a newborn baby in a toilet is gross. They briefly showed the toilet from an overhead view during one shot...did you see it? It didn't look totally flushed. :yack: I hope she at least flushed the toilet before she dropped her baby in there.

The riot at the end of the show was super lame, IMHO.

I miss Jessalyn Gilsig (Lauren) and Rashida Jones (Louisa). :( It won't really bother me if they don't explain their departures, but it'd be nice if they did.
