Interesting Match Game on last night.
It was on GameShow Network, or whatever that channel is that shows old game shows, but these two last night were particularly surreal, just because of the advance knowledge 25 years brings.
In the first one, there was the question "3's ________". The first thing that popped in my head was "3's Company", and apparently, that was what the contestant thought. However, the prevailing answer was "3's a crowd". Not too bad, except that the host and most of the "panel" didn't understand the reference. The host admitted he'd never seen the show or even heard of it.
In my mind, I thought "who in the United States isn't at least passingly familiar with the old television show. In this case, apparently it hadn't been on long enough to gain notariety.
In the second, I was about to drift off to sleep when the new contestants came on. One was introduced as an Interior Designer from Los Angeles. I look, and I think "wow, that really looks like Kirstie Alley." Lo and behold, the host refers to her as "Kirstie".
It was indeed her, and it was very strange to see her as a self-conscious nobody. She was just Kirstie, an interior designer who definately wanted to be noticed -- but was at the same time very unsure of what she was doing on this odd game show.
Very strange.

She must've been making the game show circuit while trying to break into show business, because I've seen Kirstie Alley on an old episode of "Super Password". I'm almost certain the host was Alan Ludden, because I think she was already somewhat known around the time of the Bert Convy episodes.

Match Game (in color) ran from 1973 - 1982.. Three's Company ran from 1977 - 1984. So unless it was from 1977 on... would people know to associate the phrase to the sitcom. Also, 1977 used to host a primetime verison of Match Game. And I doubt CBS would have wanted to mention another network's show.

Yeah Kirstie was on Password as a contestant, as well.
I saw that episode of Math Game with the 3's _________.
I, as you, said Company. That particular episode must have aired before Three's Company was put on the air.
But I would have said Three's Company, even if I had never heard of the show, anyway. So...who am I to say anything.
I also noticed "Jamie" on the show as well. Jamie Lee Curtis that is...she was hot.

The Match Game is interesting to watch to see how popular phrases change over time. I saw one episode where the clue was something like "So-and-so never thought her husband would get so into gardening, but right now he's upstairs __*blanking*__ the begonias."
The contestant said "making love" and one of the stars said "sleeping with" - it wasn't a match, and the alternate meaning of "sleeping" wasn't even debated.
That show also drives me crazy when I think of the "perfect" answer (in my mind at least) and no one on the panel even comes close to my way of thinking.

So if you had never heard of the show, would you really think "3's company"?

I love the Match Game. I wish I'd caught that Kirstie Alley episode.

No, really. I have heard of both "Two's company, three's a crowd."
And "three's company." (not because of the show)
Menage a trios anyone?
BTW - I can say whatever I want.
