WTF happened tonight, America?

Simon is pissed.

jhansla 08-07-02 09:04 PM

Never mind simon I'm pissed

outcastja 08-07-02 09:14 PM

Who got voted off tonight?

jhansla 08-07-02 09:17 PM

Christina :0

ravan 08-07-02 11:05 PM

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!

She's so cuuuuuuuute.

RJ was the one to go clearly in my mind.

I wonder if that was the reason somehow she wasnt there - instant hospitalization sounds weird.

das Monkey 08-08-02 03:45 AM

Hospitalization doesn't sound that odd to me. She probably got sick a few days ago and hid it so she could perform last night, and now it's caught up with her. She's probably just dehydrated or something simple.

I think a lot of us here felt R.J. was the worst, but that Christina wasn't anything too special either. I imagine there's a lot of truth in what the Princess said about gender breakdown. First, I would imagine more women are voting than men, probably significantly more. You split those men among Tamyra and Kelly and Kelly and Nikki and Kelly, and there are probably not as many votes left for Christina.

I'll miss her pretty face, but really it was a toss-up between her and R.J. for me. The judges are full of crap to say she was great last night. She was better than R.J., but really, she was just O.K.

I will note one amazing thing about this show. I didn't think it was possible for anything to make a Monkey born and raised in the ATL to hate both Ford and Coca-Cola with such a passion. Truly amazing.

I found it odd that someone would comment on her weight but not on Kelly's.

Now that's just stupid. She's not talented enough to be the American Idol, but there's nothing wrong with her caboose or neighboring cars. Kelly's definitely carrying more weight if they want to use that as any relevant piece of information. Of course, all of that is jibber jabber. Industry people suck. I accept that someone's "look" is important in this contest, but none of them has anything wrong with his/her appearance. Talk about superficial.

das

Well das, we *are* talking about Enter-lame-ment Weakly here. The biggest piece of s-h-*-t magazine on the stands. Don't get me started on them.

No, I haven't noticed that. What channel are *you* watching?? I want to switch over right away. ;)

I'm not at all impressed by any of the male singers (then again, I can't stand falsettos for the most parts). I don't get the Sideshow Bob "talent" unless it's on par with the Tom Jones hook (at least Tom Jones has a way of owning songs he sings). RJ does nothing for me either.

Nikki is okay, definitely won't win if people judge her only on talent (vocally thick, reminds me of Joan Jett). Kelly is a strange mix in singing style/voice vs. her ethnicity (but I think her voice has the most presence out of the remaining finalists and commands the most attention). Tamyra does have the Whitney Houston vibe to her. I wonder if it'll come down to Tamyra/Kelly/Sideshow Bob. Makes you wonder if EW got it right when they put Kelly and Sideshow Bob on their cover last week.

My thoughts exactly.

I couldn't believe a no talent ass clown like RJ is still in the contest. Fox or the people in charge probably rigged the votes so that Christina was eliminated because she was hospitalized and might not come back. So instead of taking a chance that she'll back, they just got rid of her to make sure that they'll have their 5 contestants next week.

Jlbkwrm 08-08-02 10:14 PM

The best theory I've yet read for Christina's untimely booting is this:

Christina, after this week's performance, clearly established her place as fourth. She wasn't awe-inspiring, but her performance was the best of the bottom three (Nikki murdered the last note, and RJ was RJ). So, after the Tuesday show, it looks like either Nikki or RJ is gone. Their fanbases come out, en force, to save them. This wouldn't have been so bad, except people who don't particularly care for either get involved.

People who want RJ gone decide to vote for Nikki, to get rid of him.

Good idea, in theory, but people who want Nikki gone vote for RJ. As a result, Nikki and RJ rack up a ton of votes that aren't votes for their talent, but votes against their opponent. The people voting 'against' RJ or Nikki are most likely also voting for their favorite--Kelly, Tamyra, or Justin.

Christina doesn't even enter into the equation. She gets her normal amount of votes, and people just figure that she'll come in fourth, like she should. Problem is, the inflated vote totals for Nikki and RJ leave her short.

The scariest concept of all is that this could actually happen again, next week. Everyone's assuming that the top 3 are safe, and the showdown between the anti-Nikki and the anti-RJ group could get worse... I will be so very, very pissed off if Kelly or Tamyra goes because of the attempted voting against.

Da Thrilla 08-08-02 10:23 PM

Wow. I am still shocked she got booted off. Didn't see Tuesday's show but last Tuesday her "Ain't No Sunshine" performance was the best I've seen on American Idol.

I'm pulling for Kelly ever since Sideshow Bob's crappy performance a couple weeks back. She is the total package. -other-

Well.. in the Big Band show he looked directly into the camera twice at the most. I was shocked.

I think RJ is learning from him because he was very Sidesh....I mean Justinesque in his performance.

From E! or Yahoo! or Somewhere!:
Quote:

The 21-year-old American Idol contestant was taken to a Los Angeles hospital Wednesday night just hours before she was voted out of Fox's pop-wannabe competition.

Christian was a no-show on the series after suffering from what was described as "dehydration" caused by stress. Christian was out of doctors' care in time to join her friends and family as they watched her lose the viewer call-in vote.

The Florida college student is expected to make a full recovery.

Seeing how she was judge Simon Cowell's personal crush, the decision was controversial. Christian actually performed well during Tuesday night's show, and the judges were more critical of contestants Nikki McKibbin and especially R.J. Helton, who flubbed the lyrics during his performance of "I Won't Dance."

Admitted Helton on Wednesday's show: "Christina did amazing last night, and I struggled."

Christian, meanwhile, earned praise for her rendition of "Glory of Love." Said Cowell: "I think America voted wrong, and R.J., I think you're incredibly lucky."

Of course, devout Christian fans also weren't too pleased with the decision.

"Christina got robbed," said one fan, Viva, on the Fox message boards. "Good luck, Christina--you're too good a singer for the superficial, stupid audience."

Superficial or not, the viewers have now whittled down the finalists to five: Justin Guarini, Kelly Clarkson, Tamyra Gray, McKibbin and Helton. The finale for Fox's summer hit is set for September 4 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Wednesday night's episode also kept Fox's winning streak going in the ratings, notching a preliminary 8.5 household rating and 13 share for first place in its 9:30 p.m. time period. Idol also pushed Fox into second place behind NBC for the night.
Monkey wise. ;)

Thanks for the article, das. :)

And on a sidenote - I keep finding myself listening to Tamyra's Minnie the Moocher and Kelly's Stuff Like that There. Two amazing renditions of two amazing songs - I just can't pick a favorite between these two.

I'm almost scared for either of them to win, though - I don't want either singer's amazing range (in genre and voice) altered and smooshed into a pigeonhole of music or appearance that will inevitably happen in popstardom. :(

You know we'll never get these kind of songs from a "pop star" - and these are the songs that have moved me. I dread hearing a mariah carey scream. :(

Absolutely correct.

I'm afraid if Tamyra wins she will definitely fall into the "Britney Spears" catagory or the awful R&B scene.

I'm not so sure about Kelly because she doesn't really fit the "Britney" Spears catagory and definitely doesn't needs to waste away in R&B. She could do a lot of different things which is what makes her great. Hell I would love to work with her...I have some songs she would be perfect for...but anyway.

I would like to see Kelly win now...but if it's a pop idol we are looking for Tamyra is the clear choice.

The other thing that will "pigeonhole" them is the fact that they are not songwriters, so they will have a team of writers doing it for them, singing their melodies, and fitting into their mold.

Patman 08-12-02 08:33 PM

I had to chuckle when I heard that folks like Diane Warren were writing original songs for the final sing-off. This will encapsulate their entire career unless they get more into the song creation aspect of their music career.

I am glad that I am not the only one! I amleaning more on Kelly's side. Something about Tamyra's enunciation throws me off. It isn't Minnie the Moocher a real Hochie Coocher...it's Minne the Moocha..a real hoochie coocha! :-)

Comparing the Kelly version of Stuff Like That There to Bette Midler's...I prefer Kelly's. I love Bette but I just like Kelly's version better. She gave it her own style. Bette sounds like Bette doing 50's music while Kelly sounded like she was from that time. SHe was a good miz of Bette and Betty Hutton's version with her own cuteness thrown in.

I guess youcan tell who gets my vote! :-)

So is this Tuesday night Burt Bacharach night?

I heard that Bacharach was working with the contestants and choosing one of his songs for each of them--they do not get to choose.

I would give just about anything to hear Justin sing "God Give Me Strength." He could use his falsetto on that one and it's a real humble, heart-breaking song.

Great. Enjoy this quote I once ran across:

Quote:

Where would we be without hired gun songwriters to give us those timeless, impersonal love songs that form the unwanted soundtrack to our lives? Diane Warren, the ultimate professional songwriter; if there's a horrible Hallmark Moment love song topping the charts, odds are it's one of hers.

Just as a sidebar, one of those ABC 20/20 special did one on Diane Warren, and the woman has never been truly in love, she's just this weird idiot savant when it comes to being able to churn out pop love songs that show up soundtracks and top 40 stations. Even her mom laments how Diane needs to find some guy and settle down with.

The only thing more impersonal than singing someone else's music is singing the love song of one who's never been in love. Sadly, I must admit she's written a few pieces of music that I like (maybe it's just the performers), but the proliferation of generic MTV video soundtrack love songs makes it easy to understand how she'd have trouble meeting a man, or at least one who doesn't want to smack her.

das

Patman 08-13-02 08:49 AM

I think if you're a guy aware of her songwriting, you'd be wary of being the inspiration of the next song from her.

Okay, enough digression, let's talk about songs that each one of the remaining finalist should sing to bring out the best in their abilities.

And after that, she'd probably never write another hit record! :)

I remember joking in the 80's about Lionel Richie's perennially happy love life-- all his hit songs were such happy love songs. It was ironic after his wife beat him up he wasn't able to write hit songs any more.

So did anyone see Simon Cowell yesterday on Regis? It was entertaining. I made note of his height-- I was wondering just how short he is since Paula always commented on it and they never showed him standing up. I noticed that he was taller than Regis but he did have slight heels on.

He said a reporter actually accused him of being the reason that Christina Christian went to the hospital. That she couldn't stand the strain of his "crush".

Speaking of which, Christina will be on Regis tomorrow morning. Interesting. I didn't think the booted Idols were making the talk show rounds.
