It's the final episode of last season "Two Cathedrals" and also the best episode of the whole series IMHO. Bartlett is still reeling after Mrs. Landingham's traffic death. Everyone else is concerned about the fallout over his admission of having MS and whether he'll run for reelection again. In one of the greatest dramatic scenes ever filmed Bartlett begins to curse god at the National Cathedral after Mrs. Landingham's funeral service. He asks god what he's done to deserve that loss and reels off a list of things he's improved during his term. He also lights a cigarette and throws it on the church floor out of deliberate disrespect, alluding to a scene in an earlier flashback where his father scolded him for doing the same as a college student. The episode shows his formative years during college and both the strained relationship he had with his father and the good relationship he had with Mrs. Landingham who began as his father's secretary. Meanwhile, Toby gets a job offer from a friend of Leo's in case the administration doesn't run for reelection. In the end Bartlett has a "hallucination" of sorts where he sees Mrs. Landingham and she makes him truly realize all the good he's done and convinces him to run again. Then as a tropical storm moves up past Washington and Bartlett walks thru the rain they cue up "Brother in Arms" (a fantastic Dire Straits song) and Bartlett goes to the final press conference where everyone anxiously awaits his decision, despite him having earlier told Leo that he wouldn't run again. The final scene shows him putting his hands in his pockets and staring off to his side, smiling; another allusion to a flashback where he did the same thing as a young man and Mrs. Landingham knew then that he had decided to help her. A brilliant episode.
