Interesting article on WS TVs / films

Found an interesting article discussing the merits of WS television and films in today's (July 25) Cleveland Plain Dealer:

The world needs more reporters like him.

Good article for the widescreen novices.

As widescreen TVs get more popular, more movies on DVD and videotape will be released in widescreen only.
I sure hope so. The trend seems to be the opposite (more FF/P&S), but hopefully it will go back in the other direction as HDTV takes over. Then again, people will still complain about 2.35:1 and 1.33:1 programs not filling the screen, so we'll have to watch out for 16:9 P&S.

Viewers have their own preferences, and these sets allow them to pick how they want to deal with aspect ratio configurations until the industry ends up more or less standardized at 16-to-9.
Letterboxing will always be with us, as long as our display devices have fixed dimensions. People are just going to have to accept the fact that not every film or program is going to fill their screens.

"It's a reality check, but that's the way it is," Kono said. "You're not going to change the whole movie industry because you don't like the black bars."
WELL SAID!
