Color me confused. Regarding the cable channel AMC

Okay..

So, from my past knowledge, AMC cable channel (American Movie Classics) used to show classic movies from the past. Things like Cleopatra, Ben Hur, and such. I havent actually watched anything on AMC recently.

Also, they had no commercials during the movie. Afterall, it was a cable channel.

Well.. last night I was flipping through the tv channels and stumbled across Speed.. Settling in to watch a mindless popcorn flick before bed is always fun.. But what blew my mind is that it was on AMC. and it had commercials during it.

When did AMC turn into just another old cable channel showing the same movies?

We had a thread about this a few months back.

AMC has decided that consumers don't really want classic movies without commericials, so they've created a specialty cable channel for thet AMC Classic or some such jazz....

AMC itself will start showing more "contemporary" movies which even the biggest fanboy wouldn't dare call classic in the same sense of Hitchcock movies. Essentially rendering it the same as a TNT or any other bland cable channel.

My cable company doesn't have TCM....

I kind of wish it did. I saw it once at a friends house, and I liked it a lot.

TCM is still one of the best channels around. I love flipping over to some wonderful, yet somehow forgotten, gem.

Actually John Burke is one of the only good things AMC has going for them now.

I occasionally watch AMC for some of the Universal "Monster" movies, Abbott & Costello, and a few other B&W horror flicks. Other than that, they've basically gone the way of TNN...I'll stick with TCM.

I was flipping through as well, today.

I started watching the 1951 version of The Red Badge of Courage.

Excellent. I have read the novel, and this film was pretty close to it.

TCM has such awesome films that I would probably never have seen if it were not for the station.

The LA Times just ran an article on the dreaded AMC, and they're threatening to run even more ad space by the end of the year. Their alibi is "compared to TNT and USA we have less commercials". This company Rainbow Media that owns AMC also owns Bravo (which also used to be commercial free) and IFC, which to date still doesn't run ads for the Vegematic or the George Foreman Grill.

I dont' want to speak for everyone here, but in what universe is "Predator" considered an American movie classic? They run it constantly, so much that I've taken to calling AMC "The Predator Channel". Even if the only movies in the world were those directed by John McTiernan, "Predator" would still not be a classic.

Compared to Class Action, however, Predator is a masterpiece.

Yeah, the Predator and Speed deal also has a conveinant tie-in with their new 'Behind The Scenes' series. Its too funny though that they will do a 'Behind the Scenes' on something modern like Broadcast News (which by all means is a good example of a modern classic) but not show the movie. Instead they run some other piece of garbage.

TCM is the best. I just recently caught a great double feature of the two Edward Arnold Duncan Maclain detective films, Eyes in the Night and the Hidden Eye. Where else are you going to find that?

I didn't really believe they would show the Exorcist, but it's true. I would be suprised if it was really uncut...I rented it a few weeks ago and I would imagine some scenes would have to be edited for TV.

i think it will be uncut, since it starts at 2:35 in the morning and all the kids are in bed by that time. it seems like that they are also gonna play the movie a clockwork orenge which is also very contraversial.

also, for some reason, i do not know why all of you liked logans run so much. plus there was hardly any nudity that i saw (the wierd slo mo techno club has a little and the scene in the pool or lake). plus the movie imo was really bad too.

AMC showed The Deer Hunter OAR a few weeks ago. I don't know if they edited it at all, but the first few minutes that I saw had the s-word and guy-butt, so I'm guessing they didn't.

And, strangely enough, I was flipping around and saw something letterboxed on The Movie Channel the other day.

Also, I've always assumed that TCM showed everything uncut, but I may be wrong.

I watched The Deer Hunter on AMC a few weeks ago and it had some of the more violent scenes edited down.

I too am under the assumption the TCM plays all their movies uncut but I've never seen anything over a PG film on TCM so I don't know what they'll do for R rated movies.

Oh, and just to assure you that AMC is serioulsy falling these days, I saw the definintion of American Movie Classic: Bachelor Party on the other night.

Last time watched AMC they only had one commercial break about half way through the film. Have they added more breaks to their movies recently?

Yeah, whenever I watch TV I enjoy a good woman's hygene or Dell commercial. I find myself avoiding channels that don't have any ads just so I can enjoy a hearty chuckle at the marketing department's latest endeavor.

And Rainbow Media is, in turn, owned by Cablevision, whose stock price is slumping and who just announced plans to shut down 26 of their 43 The Wiz electronics stores in the NYC area. Between the beating their stores are taking, the stock collapsing, the defection of their cable customers to DirectTV (because Cablevision won't carry the YES network - The Yankees baseball channel - in the NYC area) and the failures of their professional sports teams, the Rangers and Knicks, don't be surprised when Cablevision completely flounders and sells off AMC, Bravo and IFC.

Well, I thought I'd resurrect this thread again because the inevitable has finally happened. I was watching an Abbott and Costello movie and there were eight commercial breaks for a movie that runs 79 minutes. And if you haven't heard - they're now they're calling themselves the "new" AMC. Sound familiar?

Anyway, I sent them a little feedback of my own and suggest everyone do the same:
