Reactions to the ROBIN WILLIAMS HBO Concert
It's on in about 20 minutes...
Any word on how raunchy, raw, and topical it was?
Does anyone here dislike him cause he's so frantic and over-the-top?
Me, I personally think he's the most entertaining and gifted comedian there is,
'cept his movies tend to be too sappy.

I'm liking it a lot so far. I had never seen any of his stand-up stuff before, didn't realize how frantic he is Wonder how much of this is ad-lib, and if any of it is planned

I'm enjoying it. The man is as frantic as they come. Sometimes, it's annoying, but his stand-up always entertains me. Loved the "71 Virginians" joke and all the Biblical and French humor. Good show overall.

Yawn. Didn't like it much. A few funny bits. For a live show a lot of the material felt dated. The Winter Olympics? Yeah, that's cutting edge. And you think George W. is a dummy? Wow, how original and biting
I did like how he pointed out that John Ashcroft lost his senate seat to a dead guy "because the dead guy's less scary".

Funny stuff. I agree the Olympics stuff was a little stale but he got going stronger in the second half, and the oral sex/Viagra stuff at the end practically gave me a stroke, it was so funny.

Isn't this the tail end of his tour? I imagine he's been performing the same act since the Olympics ended. Poor timing for the HBO show I guess, but not that unsurprising for his material.

he had about 15-20 bottles of water behind him. did he piss his pants by the end of the show?

I think a lot of his routine is ad-libbed but I did notice he froze for a second (forgot what his next line was) so I'm guessing it's more planned than I originally thought.
Anyone who's ever seen him on Comic Relief pretty much knows what to expect from him. Only tonight he didn't have Billy Crystal or Whoopi Goldberg to hold him back.

Loved it
good to see Robin winning over hearts and minds with his rapid fire manic standup. Seemed to go on forever but I enjoyed it.
Best joke
" The French don't have baseball, if they did there would only be a left field and no one would be safe"...

I thought it was very good. I was wondering how many bottles of water he was going to go thru. Must have been hot in there, did u see how bad he was sweating?

Um, I'm thinking the man has seen (and studied) Eddie Izzard's recent "history of the world" act. A lot of those biblical jokes read like Izzard-isms.
Don't get me wrong, I love Robin. He's one of the few stand-up comedians I actually went out and paid good money (lots of good money) to see. But he certainly wasn't hitting on all cylinders last night. Lots of moderately amusing material, very little that was truly hysterical.

Got to admit, I am a bit curious about his choice of material. Some of his stuff seemed dated back in April and now it seems like really old. Though the Enron, Winter Olympic and anthrax jokes were a bit old. Although I love any joke that points out Dubya is an idiot. Can't ever get tired of those.
Overall the special was pretty good although I kinda wish I had saved my $120 for two tickets back in April and just watched this instead. Was about the same and I got a better view on television. Of course, at least now i can say I have seem him perform live. Who wants to touch me?? I said WHO WANTS TO TOUCH ME?!?!!?

I thought his making fun of Bush and those around him(read non-liberals) was lame and tired. Come on stand ups. Let's keep it balanced or just stick to talking about your mental issues.
But I had an assfull of Robin's stand up act 10 years ago...so I might be biased.
