TNG: Neutral Zone

I had nitpickers but I'm gonna do it anyway.

in the episode data and the others say its been over 50 years since the Federation has had contact with Romulans.

Worf's parents are killed by Romulans...if he over 50 years old?

Tasha is kidnapped by them and then has a daughter, lets say she waited like 10 years after she was kidnapped to have a daughter, when we see the daughter she is probably in her 30s that would give us 40 years, i guess you could push her age to 40 then it could equal out to 50 years if that was the last contact with Romulans.

There is also no mention in there of the peace treaty between the two empires they just make it out like Romulans are evil.

It just seems like the got the time span wrong, but it doesnt really have any impact on the rest of the series, but i was bored and decided to be picky

I think that they mean there has been no formal contact with the Romulans. And only from the perspective of the Federation.

Worf's family was killed by the Romulans, but that was the Klingon Empire. The Federation and the Klingons were not exactly friends back then.

In addition, when Tasha goes back in time, they were fighting the Romulans that were attacking a Klingon outpost. Again, not technically formal contact and since the Enterprise C was destroyed, they say that they aren't entirely sure that the Romulans were to blame right?

another question since i havent seen these episodes in a while.

i'm assuming the thing that destroyed the outposts was the Borg, right? its not mentioned again till Best of Both worlds, right?

why would the Bord destroy the outposts instead of assimilating them?

It sickens me that I know this, but here is the answer to your question. The borg first assimilate the people, then assimilate the technology by "scooping" up all the stuctures on a planet. Hence the reason why all the cities are destroyed. They assimilate alien technologies into their collective as well as the people.

And yes, it is the Borg that destoryed the outposts in "The Nuetral Zone"

I'll go back to my parent's basement now.

then why is earth assimilated in first contact instead of scooped up?

i guess you could argue that its bigger and more complex than a simple outpost.

oh well, i'll stop asking geeky questions as well. thanks for the info

I never really thought about the First Contact question. The answer is I have no idea. Maybe they felt they needed to establish some kind of homeworld in the Alpha quadrant.

Earth's position in the Alpha Quadrant is key for the Borg and worth making into an outpost. At that time, they have absolutely no presence there. Plus, despite their drone collective, they're not big fans of humans. I'm sure buried within the collective, there's a sense of satisfaction associated with assimilating Picard's home planet.

In the first Borg appearance (the one with Q), they most defintely scooped up cities, and seeme dto have little interest in life forms. In fact I think Q even says that they're only interested in technology. Note also that Q describes the Borg as "drones," and strongly indicates Borg are one sex.

By the time of the next Borg appearance (Best of Both Worlds), the Borg's agenda seems to have changed, and now they want to assimilate cultures, and "add their distinctiveness to their collective."

By the time of the First Contact movie, we now have a Borg Queen, which seems and odd thing for a collective to have, and under her command, the Borg seem driven more by power and revenge. Note that a Borg Queen would seem to conflict with Q's asexual drone statement.

And by the time of Voyager, we meet 7 of 9, whose presence and appearance kills, mutilates, and buries and salts the earth the notion that Borg are asexual drones.

So the Borg act pretty much however they need them to act to fit the current storyline. And yes, I too am ashamed I know things like this.

Up until that 4th series started tinkering with things, everything pretty much works for me. The idea of individuality was addressed through Hugh's involvement on Enterprise in 'I, Borg' and later with Lore's involvement in 'Descent I & II'. I really don't have too much problem with the Borg Queen idea.

but in First Contact we see the queen existed in Best of Both Worlds.

i've missed most of the later seasons of Voyager so I dont know how much its perverted the borg storyline but i'm guessing they probably did.

oh and another thing, how can a single race like the Klingon Empire or Romulan Empire or Ferengi Alliance, really pose that great of a threat to an alliance of races like the Federation.

but then again, its probably supposed to mimick the Allies vs. Germany or something like that.... anyhoo, just some thoughts i had while watching the show

From: Bartertown due to it having a better economy than where I really live.
I think the klingons and romulans have as many planets as the federation, or close to it, and have some minor races that have been conquered and are part of their empires

I don't think that the Borg being one sex was ever implied. It wouldn't really make sense since from the beginning they were described as assimilating people into their collective, including babies.

That first episode where the borg hit the outposts was supposed to lead to a Federation/Romulan war against the Borg. A writers' strike prevented that from coming to fruition.

The Borg queen, in First Contact, wasn't the leader of the Borg. She was the Borg's vessel. She was their speaker. She was the Borg. She was on a revenge trip because the Borg, as a whole collective would be on a revenege trip. They're all of one big mind, and that one big mind was pissed. Individual drones of course dont' show it... but the big collective (which is in the vessel of the Queen) sure as hell would.

In Voyager they turned her into the leader though. Someone who barked orders at her drones. In First Contact she never orders drones to do anything... because she IS the drones. Remember her line saying she was the Borg? well she was telling the truth. In Voyager though, she talks to her drones. God I hate Voyager.

As for why they didn't assimilate the outposts, I always assumed that a borg scout ship came in, whipped out the bases, took some of the crew and equipment. They then found there was nothing there really worth taking the quadrant over for.

Until of course, the second season. When guess what should happen but the Enterprise showing up and then disappering again. Of course, the reason was Q's powers, but the Borg didn't know that.

They don't "turn things over" like a virus or something. They take things then make them their own. That's why there aren't federation ships out there under the control of the borg... they would take the bloody ship apart and use it's technology in their own ships.

Oh wait, didn't they assimilate one ship in Voyager? God I hate Voyager.

As for why the Federation, made up of hundred of worlds, can be threatened by just one empire... well, those empires have some worlds too. Plus they're a lot more focused! most worlds in the Federation are devoted to science or just devoted to living. They don't each have their own fleets and such. Their resources of course belong to the Federation... but that's all they really add.

Biz - anyone with an ounce of common sense or intellect realizes how badly Voyager sucked. It was the worst of the shows.

The Borg are part technology and part organic. The Borg Queen was their CPU.
