Am I just old or is the manic editing on MTV really freaking annoying?

I like that show Cribs, but I can't watch it for long with all the quick cuts and fast zooms. I'd like to be able to focus on the pads for more than a split second but the damn caffeinated cameras won't allow it. I get so irritated after a few minutes that I finally turn it off.
So I got to thinking, is this just because I'm *gasp* in my thirties now, or is it just damn irritating period?

Don't feel too bad. I'm so crotchety that I won't even watch that dingbat channel. The vapid morons that they parade before us aren't any more physically attractive than tons of people (some of whom are intelligent and nice) that see each day as I go about my life and fame doesn't impress me at all.
I guess the wondrous world of today's youth culture just doesn't do it for me.
Oh yeah. The methamphetamine film making technique does get old.

It's a poor way to cater to the ADD kids, pretending that something is happening when nothing actually is. Example: guy talking for 2 minutes. Well, we can't just let him talk. We have to switch angles several times, including "behind the scenes" angles that show the camera and bits of the set, one angle that is in black and white, and one where the camera tilts back and forth. If things get really tedious, we can play with the editing by stretching the picture around like the guy is made of silly putty.

(Sigh)...I miss the days when MTV actually showed VIDEOS, instead of all of these shows.
I want to see "Mr. Roboto" by Styx and "I Know What Boys Like" by the Waitresses!

But on the upside, Jerry Stackhouse has the nicest house I have ever seen!
Groucho, right on....you are so right its funny.
Good thing the only glimpses I get of MTV is when I surf from channel 28 to 30 and am to lazy to punch in "3" and "0"

This is nothing new, and it's only getting worse. How do you explain the rise of directors like Michael Bay and Simon West? The mass audience's entire vocabulary for what constitutes a 'shot' and a 'sequence' has effectively been ruined.

Well the rise of Michael Bay/Simon West/David Fincher (people seem to "forget" him when they want to trash mouth video to feature directors) is quite simple.
Shooting videos has become like shooting short movies, they're effects heavy, highly choreographed multi-day and multi-million dollar productions. If I had to pick a director and was given the choice between a guy who just graduated film school or a video director, I'd choose a video director, they have the experience for the job.
And that's my rant.....sorry, had to get that out.

I hate the rapid cutting, especially during interviews as mentioned above. I'm only 27 and find most everything concerning today's youth is annoying and dumbed-down. This "film" technique is the same reason I will never watch Moulin Rouge.

The spastic hamster editing of cribs is especially annoying, because it's dern near impossible to SEE that Ms. Pacman game the gold-toothed rapper is so proud of.

All videos, all the time with nothing made after the early 90's. No shows, no VJ's and no damn commercials

It's bad enough on MTV, but it's starting to creep onto other channels.
TechTV has a show called Future Fighting Machines that features some of the most pointless editing I've ever seen. Why do you need to change from one shaky, hand held camera angle to another one less than 10 degrees away within the same sentence?

FOX is worse, with that horrible "Madden" award show. They can't just show the players and some cut scenes of action from the field, there was this CONSTANT flashing, flash, flash, flash - lucky I don't have seizure disorder because that would have triggered a friggin coma.
Flash - player, flash - player from another angle, flash - player running the ball upfield, flash - player catching the ball...
flash flash flash!
