David Blaine's Vertigo

It's amazing what passes for drama these days...

If it's not a reality show, it's the test of "human endurance" by standing on a platform [with handles] -- then diving into a 12 foot high row of cardboard boxes.

Don't get me wrong...some of the slight of hand stuff he does is cool, but the "Scott Sapp christ ego" he's got is disturbing.

Mister Beefhead 05-23-02 12:40 AM

Bah. That guy is the biggest hack of all time. Illusionist my ass.

PaperStreetSoapCo 05-23-02 12:50 AM

They've been advertising this as if he were jumping from a REAL building onto concrete or something. Then I turn it on, and it's from a high platform onto a pile of cardboard boxes. It looked freaky, but this isn't magic at all. He's turning into a frickin daredevil, if anything.

AJW 05-23-02 01:34 AM

I found the Fear Factor episode where the contestants had to drive a car off a building into cardboard boxes more entertaining :)

matrixrok9 05-23-02 02:19 AM

I think you guys are missing the point. His gimmick was standing on that ledge for more than 30 hours.

Morf 05-23-02 07:54 AM

The handles were only there to steady himself in the case of strong winds. For the majority of his 34 hour perch, the handles were only ankle-high. Only at the end, when he prepared to jump, did they raise the handles.

Personally, I enjoy his illusions much more. Several of the ones he showed had me really gaping at the screen:

- where he took the empty (and semi-crushed) beer can from the guy, and turned it into a full beer can right before his (and our) eyes. Unless the entire thing was staged, I can't figure out for the life of me how he did that.

- where he took the cup from the hobo and turned it into cup full of change (again, right before our eyes). Truly amazing.

but they kept saying it was supposed to be 35. It was only 34 and some change. :D

yeah that so neat.... howd he do it? And howd he get that woman's watch into that store, and stick his hand thru the glass to get her watch???

Canis Firebrand 05-23-02 09:22 AM

I think the only "trick" that needs to be explained is how he gets so many people to watch him perform.

He's not that entertaining, and not that great a "magician"

Last nights show wasn't even magic. Ohh.. so he stood on a pillar for 34 hours and jumped onto some boxes.

But people watch him and like him. More power to them. If they enjoy his stuff, thats their thing. I just don't care for him.

Different strokes...

If you looked at the can after the guy drank from it, the crush in the can was exactly the same as the crush of the can when David first started the trick and was emptying the can. I'm sure it was staged. Full can...drink from can...empty can...full can.

I can't figure out the watch trick though.

Just speculation mind you, but I'd say: If you remember, at the start of the trick, he said keep your eye on her watch. As they played around with the cards, he took her watch off her wrist (I think we all saw that).

Next, an "everyday New Yorker" drinking a cup of coffee walks by behind them, and says something like, "The Queen of Hearts. Yeah, that was in The Manchurian Candidate." (Great movie by the way.) DB watches him go down the street and comments, "Weird guy."

Then DB moves the couple down the street, forgetting the card trick he had been doing. They stop in front of a jewelry store, and he starts talking about the watches in the window. He then points out the woman's watch, then reaches through the glass (using a newspaper to cover the glass) and retrieves her watch.

How'd he do it? Watch the Masked Magician:
Spoiler:
DB passed the watch to the weird guy as he passed behind the woman. The weird guy proceeded down the street and went into the supposedly closed jewelry store (which had been set up for this trick) and placed the watch in the window. The glass in the window is actually a few feet longer than necessary and is specially built into a track that goes into the walls on either side. At one end of the pane (hidden within the wall) is a small hole. The window was slid down its track (by DB's assistants inside the store) just as he picked up the conveniently discarded piece of newspaper and placed it against the glass. He reached through this hole, pulled out the watch, and the glass was slid back into its original position, giving the illusion that he had put his arm through the glass. With the hole in the glass safely hidden within the wall, the window now appears perfectly normal on close-up inspection. The spectators ooh and ahh over how magical "Mr. Personality" is. End of trick.

ha! cool, nonetheless. And I did notice that guy walk behind that lady, and I did notice his hand on that lady's watch, afterall, they (the tv people) had pointed it out anyway on the screen. But yeah, that makes sense. :) Can you explain the beer can??

well yeah, but that doesnt explain the trick :p howd he get it closed again? and you saw it "explode" when he reopened it.

They started with a full un-opened beer can. Then pretty much went backwards on filming. When he put his finger on top it didn't seal the can it opened it.

Can I explain the beer can trick (or as I like to call it resurrecting the dead soldier)? I have a few ideas on this one, but none that I feel are definitive.

Works for me. He has used film tricks in the past.

Deftones 05-23-02 10:50 AM

not very impressed with this special. i like it when he goes out and does street "magic" for people. they had very little of that this time.

coffin_booth 05-23-02 01:39 PM

I thought his past specials were better. He must be running low on tricks because this one had far fewer and even showed tricks from past specials... Some of his slight of hand and street stuff is great, but the 'bite the quarter' bit is a trick you can buy at any old magic shop.

Actually, he doesnt claim to be a magician or illusioinist or stunt daredevil. He said he just thinks of himself as an "entertainer", using all of the three combined.

I think the tower edurance stunt wasnt that neat because I think around a month ago he said he was doing it for 62 hours and much higher, but they had to change it. Originally he wanted to have a board/plank suspended over a New York street, like 30 stories up and that was going to be the endurance test.

I thought he was a "performance artist."

What was up with the Ministry of Funny Walks bit on the bridge, and falling down on the sidewalk only to get up and walk away after he drew a few onlookers?

ZakVTA 05-23-02 03:50 PM

Did anyone see him on Carson Daly's late night show? At the end of the show he, for some reason or another, stuck his fingers into his chest and pulled out his heart. He then collapsed and it went to commercial.

I laughed pretty hard. It was almost a scene out of Indiana Jones. Now if he had only done it to Carson Daly instead.

Yeah I saw that. He is trying to take his act a little to far. Does he think we are going to believe that he could actually do that? It was so unreal that I lost a lot of respect for his entire act. He should have tried to make his chest look a little less fake before he try to pull his "heart" out.

Did you see the look of absolute horror and disgust on Carson's face??

According to the NY papers, that really freaked Carson out. And what they didn't show was Blaine's "assistants" dragging his "heartless" body off the stage. It totally freaked Carson out.

Priceless.

It's pretty well known that David Blaine is 95% film tricks. That's why he's so hated by "real" illusionists. You should hear Penn Gillette go off about him sometime. It's hilarious.

Kube 05-24-02 11:15 PM

How did he do ice trick?

What was the gimmick behind that?

Looook Ma! Howd hee do dat???

Must be Magic!

LavaLamp27 05-25-02 08:53 PM

actually...it is "magic". Everything he does is an illusion masked to look like an endurance stunt. FOX exposed how he did his "trapped in ice" stunt and I'm sure we will see how he did this too.
