the Practice 05.19.2002

Yawn.

Actually, i turned ABC on at 10p [after the X-Files] and was surprised to see the credits. I thought ABC had started it at 8 instead of 9.

Too bad they hadn't. It would've spared me from this bore of an episode. Did they save all the good stuff for the first hour?

madcougar 05-20-02 01:13 AM

Wow. No posts. I wonder if anyone watched this.

PacMan2006 05-20-02 01:49 AM

I just watched it (I taped it, among a couple other shows).

I thought it was pretty solid. The other plot line involving Rebecca's client went totally nowhere though. The performance by the actress who plays Lindsey made the show good. But, two hours is a little long for a "been there, done that" type of storyline (Bobby was, afterall, on trial for conspiracy murder this time last year).

Interesting verdict, though.

hahn 05-20-02 02:01 AM

what happened? i thought they were repeats? or was it a 2 hour season finale?

WarriorPrincess 05-20-02 07:27 AM

It was a two hour season finale. And boy oh boy was it ever predictable.

Spoiler:
Lindsay, whatever you do, don't tell them you said "you first" to the serial killer before you shot him. Remember, don't say it!!! Lindsay's reply: I know, I KNOW! I know what I said before and I won't give them any ammunition by using my words against me! You worry about your own testimony - I KNOW WHAT TO SAY! And gee, what do you know, she says the most damaging thing she could - and on the stand, no less.

And do they introduce evidence of just how dangerous the guy was without a weapon? No. They just said in closing that he needed to be muzzled and tied. Any mention of him practically biting off the nose of his prior attorney? (Whom he didn't even bother to threaten and presumably liked) No. Why would they? That would have been realistic. How about calling other witnesses from the civil commitment trial who heard the threats and fixation he had on Lindsay? Nope. Again, too realistic. How about testimony that her voice on the tape was in fact shaky and stressed - she didn't sound calm to me at all. Or how about explaining to the jury that while Bobby didn't tell the police operator about the shooter, that was because he was in shock, too. His instinct was to not shoot off at the mouth. If I were on a jury, I'd think that was plausible. How about redirect to the doctor who testified about battered women's syndrome to counteract the statistics of "more murderers than battered women" have amnesia after? Nope - let's leave the jury with the word "murder" on their mind after hearing from our own witness. After all, it never helps to have an expert clarify that in their expert opinion this case was one of a battered woman and not a cold calculated murder.

Also, Bobby is WAY too good of an attorney and he loves Lindsay far too much to have made such horrible mistakes on the witness stand. He came off like he was hiding something. And except for the one statement Lindsay made he was telling the truth. His passion when speaking on behalf of his clients would have naturally come out here for his wife, but no, of course he messed up. Otherwise there would have been very little excuse for the guilty verdict - and it's so thin as it is. Please. No jury would have convicted her for first degree murder. At worst it would have been manslaughter, and if the DA didn't include that count or any other lesser included offenses as alternative verdict choices, then she would have been acquitted. I mean good lord - they expect me to believe that last week a jury was stupid enough to vote a mass murdering psychopathic cannibal not guilty (and not by reason of insanity - a straight not guilty, yeah right) and then this week convict Lindsay of first degree murder? Please. How stupid do they think juries are? And how stupid do they think their audience is?

Now keep in mind that I am a master at suspending disbelief and I'm willing to swallow most of what passes for the practice of law on tv, but The Practice has reached an extremely low point. And I doubt I'll be back for next season, even though I have never missed an episode - I watched from day one.

But I knew the outcome was one of two very predictable paths, and for that matter I pretty much guessed every "twist" without even trying to guess them. In fact I actively surpress my analytical skills while watching my shows because it takes the surprise away and I truly love the feeling of discovery as a show unfolds. But even I was unable to avoid the forgone conclusion that
Spoiler:
either Lindsay would be found guilty as "cliffhanger" (like they won't get it overturned in the first 3 episodes of next season) or they would leave the verdict itself as the cliffhanger and the jury would reach the logical conclusion and acquit. Frankly I thought a guilty verdict far more likely because the quality of writing has declined so drastically, and because Bobby was found innocent last year. God forbid they repeat themselves.

Because of their need to force "twist" endings every single episode, this is easily the most predictable show on television, and tonight's finale was no different. Kelli Williams is an excellent actress and did an incredible job with the material, but it was too forced. I was a little confused with the Laroquette thing. He gave them a wink-wink defense, and they didn't use (nor acknowledge) it.

Meh.. I kind of knew it would be
Spoiler:
guilty.
I thought the verdict would be renedered and she would go crazy and get killed by the police or something. I just figured a twist was coming, but I guess the twist was a peaceful ending without someone dying.

I stopped watching The Practice around '99. I'm glad that I did. I have a question though - how many in the firm have now been on trial for something?

Jamezuva 05-20-02 10:59 AM

geez guys...does anyone on this board like this show. I still consider the best show on now if not the best show ever made. yes, it definitely has flaws here and there and it is unrealistic when everything is taken together, but I still think the individual storylines are extremely well written and done that way to try and cover as many possible ethical and other dilemmas as possible. I was pretty offended when TV guide totally ignored it when they ranked the top 50 shows of all time. Please don't get me wrong, this show has flaws, but i think every show does (even the West Wing..which has won how many Emmys). I hope this series never ends.

I just got done watching it on tape and I thought it was pretty good. What the Practice does best is presents the characters and viewers with very hard moral and ethical questions. The moment when Rebecca had to decide whether or not to give Helen her client's friend's name is a great "The Practice" moment. As for that sub-plot not going anywhere, it seemed clear to me that this "two hour" season finale was written to be two seperate episodes, the first ending with everyone prepared for Linsey's trial and the 'resolution' of Rebecca's case.

As for the final verdict, they clearly revealed (at least to me) that it was going to be guilty with the ominous music they had playing while everyone was sitting waiting for the verdict to be read. I saw no "twist" like every one is talking about here. (though, to be honest, when I saw Laroquette's name in the list of guest stars thought the twist would be he'd show up at the end and imply he was "the other man". I'm very glad that sort of twist didn't happen.)

I had a long response to type up... but it basically repeats all of the points that WarriorPrincess makes.

As with most of the season, the writing on the finale was weak and the story was predictable. This show was interesting and fun when it started, but (like most David Kelley shows) after a few years it is now spiraling out of control. The performances are strong, but the scripts are just phoned in. Waste of time.

I think I'll probably be dropping this show (and possibly Enterprise) for next season.

JohnPhoenix 05-21-02 09:25 PM

I love The Practice, but agree the scripts have been pretty weak lately. David E. Kelley might want to focus on one show instead of juggling three. I would also type alot, but...just read WarriorPrincess' reply. Guess I'm just phoning it in now too...
