So finally BP gets around to the N-word. Danny's class has some scuffles from a white kid trying to "get down with the homies" and finds that white folks just aren't allowed to use the N-word...ever. This doesn't quite sit well with Danny, who almost gets fired from pushing the N-velope so to speak. Anyhow, and nice divisive topic where everyone is pretty N-trenched in their views. They even discuss the new Kennedy book on the N-word. Stephen ends up teaching the class since only a black person can use the N-word and discuss such ramifications of it.
Ronny finds out a student of hers is homeless, trying to take care of her whacked out mom. Ronnie's interference almost gets the mom sent away for being an unfit mother, and the kid is almost sent to a foster home, but Ronnie fronts them the money to get back on their feet. Ronnie tells Harry that she's not really making a difference, and just then, the student comes by to tell her they'll get back on their feet and they'll repay her and that she wants to be just like Ronnie when she grows up. Aww....
Lipshitz gave one of his students a bad recommendation which prevented the student from getting into Amhearst and the parents tried using a lawyer to apply some pressure on the school to get Lipshitz to take back his recommendation. Scott decided to stand behind Lipshitz, though he did tell Amhearst his true opinion of Lipshitz when they came and asked about Lipshitz's "mental fitness".
Hey, no hook lady!

Good episode tonight! Although all these saintly teachers are becoming a little too much. If I ever saw one of my HS teachers write a personal check for one of his/her students I would have fallen over dead from shock...and don't even get me started about postponing mid-terms so we could have a "chat session"
You gotta love that magical school though, Danny pulls the name of a book out of his a$$ and within hours he has several dozen copies to hand out for the kids. Magic I tell ya! Back in my day (late nineties) we were still using old ratty textbooks from decades past
Ronnie needs to butt out of people's business, she does more harm than good.
And I don't care if she did have a good point tonight, someone needs to b*tch-slap Marla...HARD!

Hopefully, they will fire her for beating that kid with her hook.

Okay, that book is currently #458 at Amazon. I wonder if sales will go up thanks to tonight's show?
That was a huge tie-in, I wonder if the publisher had anything to do with that? Usually you have to be an Oprah pick to get that much attention for a new book.
I can't believe he played Chris Rock in the classroom. Too cool.
When he was talking to his class I was thinking it would be cool if he showed them Spike Lee's Bamboozled, but then I realized he can't because he's in that movie.
And it was pretty ironic Chi McBride lecturing on racial sensitivity after he starred in the "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer" which supposedly was the inspiration for the minstrel show in Bamboozled.

I guess I'm just glad that we weren't subjected to any singing tonight. No Marla and her band joining hands and belting out "We Shall Overcome". That would've been just too cheesy.

Randall Kennedy's book is now ranked number 4. Wow. I wonder if half the people purchasing it will even be at a literary level of reading to understand half of what it talks about. I've read plenty of books by law profs and they typically don't read like Steven King.

Harry was so laughing (on the inside) at Ronnie.
Danny nailed it when he told Stephen that Stephen didn't have the power to eradicate the power of the N-word, no matter how hurtful it sounds when it is spoken aloud.
I found it interesting that they set up Marla to be the hysterical one, while Marilyn was the more rational one, but in the end, it still remains a hurtful topic to each "side'.

That's the second time this has happened. Do we honestly expect teachers to buy 25 copies of a book out of their own paycheck? That's stupid...

I assume Danny called Randall Kennedy, introduced himself and explained the circumstances, and Kennedy sent him 25 comp copies. Seems as plausible an explanation as any.

I assume he told Randall Kennedy that if he comped the class the books, then his sales would go up 17,000% on Amazon.com.

I had a tough time reconciling Hanson with the character Rapaport played in Higher Learning. I kept expecting Omar Epps and Ice Cube to run into the class and beat Hanson up.

People are stupid idiots that follow whatever pop culture tells them
I'm glad that pop culture pointed to someone who is (haven't read anything by Kennedy) probably very intelligent. Hopefully some of these people will be interested enough to read through the material.
I remember the first time I heard about Laurence Tribe. People were discussing how oft cited he is on constitutional matters, so I purchased one of his books. Such dense material, yet I persisted in reading and came to really enjoy what he was saying.

Normally, I would say this statement is redundant, but I firmly believe it could use the double emphasis.

I must have been lucky to have teachers that really cared. You know... there are some of those types left. Heck, that is why I want to teach now. A teacher who will go out of their way for a student stands out in the mind of the students.
