Soppranos run time?

A question on the Sopprano's runtime, I have season 2 on DVD I'm curious how the run time can vary, so much episode 9 is 43 minutes, episode 10 is 58 minutes. I know they all air on HBO with no commerials don't they need to fill an hour?

Nope. They're as long as they need to be. You'll also notice they're not shot with commerical pacing in mind ... no obvious swells of action or dialogue to cliffhanger into the break.

That's what makes this show so great. The episodes are written the way the creater wants it. Unlike network TV, when they need something special to happen on the minute every 15 minutes.

Many HBO series do this. Sex and the City's finale last year was well over 30 min. long. There is also one episode of Sopranos that went over an hour if I remember correctly and one that was really short but very powerful.

tis the beauty of HBO that they can fill 10 minutes with previews for the upcoming shows or only 2 minutes and thus a show can be as long as it needs to be w/o breaks for comercials. The only downside is for those of us w/o Tivo that can't pause live tv to go to the loo.
