Favorite Sopranos characters?

this post is spoiler free - subsequent posts might contain spoilers

I've rented all of season 1 and I'm finishing up season 2 on dvd. There are a lot of terrific characters. But, lately the two that stand out for me are Silvio (Stevie Van Zandt) and Richie Aprile (David Proval) - Richie Aprile is an amazing character and the actor has such a unique way of speaking - he looks dangerous.

Silvio cracks me up. Does he remind anyone else of Ed Sullivan? I can't tell if that's all affectation or if the actor really has bad posture and his lip sticks out like that. But he's great.

All the characters are great, the writing in the show is great, but these are the 2 characters that stand out (for me).

Who are your favorites?

As far as bang for the buck goes, Livia Sopranos is by far the best character on the show. I could watch Marchand's scenes all day - such a hoot! ("Go on, go into the ham and take the carving knife and stab me here! Here! I would hurt me less than what you just said!", "Ooooh, poor you!")

Since she is no longer with us, I'd have to say I always enjoy scenes that include Dr. Melfi or Carmella. "What kind of animal smokes marijuana at his own confirmation!"

...and let's not forget Anthony Junior with his own panic attacks. Why is he always swatting that fly in his room with a baseball mitt? "What? No ****in' ziti?!"

Man if Richie is one of your favorite characters and you've yet to finish Season 2 - you're going to be really, really disappointed.

For me, Tony, Big P ussy and Christopher are like the Kirk, Spock and McCoy of the Sopranos. (Not necessarily in that order, mind you.)

Seriously, I think the best character on the show is Carmella.

Paulie by far. His description of Purgatory to Christopher in Season 2 is priceless.

And of course, the now classic Season 3 ep where both of these knuckleheads get lost in the woods.

I just started watching this show a few months ago, luckily my brother loaned me his soprano dvds. I really think Christopher is a great character! "You're a D-Girl!" or something like that...classic!
I really, really, really hate Livia though. I guess the actress playing her is great because I really want to talk back to the tv when she is being such a manipulative *itch!
Junior rocks too.

I'd just love to see an entire episode dedicated to the exploits of Tony's father and young Uncle Junior.

Furio's easily tied with Richie Aprile (imo) for scary/dangerous mob characters. Seems like Furio's capable and willing to doing anything to anyone. -yikes-

yep - how about poor Robert Patrick, too - sheesh-

And it's kinda nice that the Sopranos takes a little detour from The Godfather-type mob representations in that Sopranos attempts to show some of the destruction done to innocent people by these guys.

Sopranos isn't a completely un-romanticized view of mob life but it is a couple steps closer to objectivity.

Stinky: Oh right, "Bustout." Robert Patrick is completely wasted on The X-Files. Man, I just felt so sorry for the guy. What really got my goat is when he shows up again near the end of Season 2 for his kid's high school graduation and he's obvously fallen on really hard times. Tony sees him and greets him, and he shows ZERO, nothing, nada, of an inkling of remorse.

You'll forgive me if I root for Agent Harris. ;-) BTW, does the "B" in FBI stand for "bumbling?"

Yep, Tony Soprano definitely has his complete slimeball moments -and Robert Patrick looks devestated in the scene you mentioned.

Agent Harris is... the short stocky red-headed guy? Season 2 spoiler:
Spoiler:
- the FBI field agent that ***** bonds to?

You're right, the FBI don't come across as particularly adept. And I had a hard time accepting the Harris actor for that part

Question for anybody:

I'm not real clear on this. Do the Sopranos consider their house to be bugged? (I know they realize their phones are tapped)

and, if so...

Season 2 spoiler question:
Spoiler:
How come in the next to the last episode of Season 2 "Knight in White Satin Armor" when Janice shoots Richie Aprile, Tony cleans up the mess and comes home to find Carmela waiting up - Tony gives her a lot of information.

Tony doesn't come out and say what just happend. But he does say something like "I don't want to make you an accessory after the fact."

To an FBI person listening in isn't that useleful info? It seems to me that the FBI can learn a lot from that convrsation as far as what just happened to Richie.

Did the director assume that this exchange was necessary to tell the story and that the audience wouldn't consider it incriminating?

Or is Tony just tired or maybe just not in the habit of worrying about giving the FBI little scraps of information?

... just wondering

Paulie and Tony.

To answer Big Stinky's Question
Season 3 spoiler:
Spoiler:
In the first episode of the season, The feds put a bug in one of Tony's lamps in the basement (where they usually talk business). I don't think the house was bugged until then.

Tony IS a monster. He is not a nice guy, and that's why this show is so clever, you have such a hard time knowing if you should like him or not. On one hand he's doing something that a lot of people would do if they thought they could get away with it. He's got troubles with his family that we can all relate too, he's a sad guy a lot of the time... but on the other side of the coin, he's a total monster, and what he does, and how he makes his money, is bascially by exploiting others. I think this quote sums it up...

Meadow : Are you in the Mafia?
Tony : Am I in the what?!
Meadow Soprano: Whatever you want to call it. Organized crime.
Tony : That's total crap, who told you that?
Meadow : Dad, I've lived in the house all my life. I've seen the police come with warrants. I've seen you going out at three in the morning.
Tony : So you never seen Doc Cusamano going out at three in the morning on a call?
Meadow : Did the Cusamano kids ever find $50,000 in krugerrandts and a .45 automatic while they were hunting for Easter eggs?
Tony : I'm in the waste management business. Everybody immediately assumes you're mobbed up. It's a stereotype. And it's offensive. And you're the last person I would want to perpetuate it.
Meadow : Fine. There is no Mafia.
Tony : Alright look, Mead, you're a grown woman, almost. Some of my money comes from illegal gambling and whatnot. How does that make you feel?
Meadow : At least you don't keep denying it, like Mom. Kids in school think it's actually kinda neat.
Tony : They seen The Godfather, right?
Meadow: Not really. "Casino" we like, Sharon Stone, the 70's clothes, pills --
Tony : I'm not asking about those bums. I'm asking about you.
Meadow : Sometimes I wish you were like other dads. But then, like... Mr. Scangarelo for example? An advertising executive for big tobacco. Or lawyers? So many dads are full of ****.
Who are my favorites? Well, I like them all really. I like the guy, forget his name right now, maybe it's Paulie, who swipped the trophey from the fancy coffee shop because he was mad they were exploiting an italian idea. That was hilarious. Who else? Christopher and Adriana are hilarious. They're all good characters really.

As for bugs...

Spoiler:
I think the general idea is that when he can, Tony will always go to a payphone to talk, just in case the house is bugged... and they generally talk not in context while in the house. They bugged his lamp later on in the season, but then Meadow took it to college... there are also privacy laws that Tony takes advantage of.
