That '80s Show

Well we knew it was bound to happen and Fox just ran the promo tonight.

That '70s Show is great because its just a typical sitcom that just happens to take place in the '70s, its not necessarily about the '70s.

If they can pull off the same thing That '80s Show might do good too. If they try to copy '70s it won't work. I'll give it a chance though. I assume many people will considering the popularity of the '80s now with the '80s nights on radio and the all '80s stations and movies like wedding singer and all

Chad 12-05-01 12:00 AM

Only on FOX...I'll give it a shot though.

Venusian 12-05-01 12:40 AM

the miniseries The '60s was a hit but The '70s flopped. then again they were using the same characters and all.

kevin75 12-05-01 07:22 AM

so to clarify....is this the same series just moving forward in time to the 80's or is it totally new with new characters and everything set in the 80's?

New characters in the 80's

Groucho 12-05-01 09:42 AM

What's the premise? Any known actors in it?

Venusian 12-05-01 10:01 AM

it was a short promo....from the creators of That '70s Show, didnt really show much except that alot of the characters had flamboyant '80s hairstyles

Tesiae 12-05-01 12:09 PM

I would think that That 70's Show would eventually lead into the 1980's, I mean it started in 1976 and it's still in 1977 I think.

Groucho 12-05-01 12:11 PM

That 70's Show is currently on 1979. You can tell this by the references within the show itself, as well as by the Wisconson license plate in the credits.

Their hang-out just got a Space Invaders, so I think that was '78?

Tesiae 12-05-01 12:14 PM

Red Dog: Yeah, you're right it is 1978. Hey shouldn't the kids be out of high school by now? I mean it's not Arkansas. ;-)

WarriorPrincess 12-05-01 05:02 PM

I'd give this show a chance, but personally I'd rather see the 70's Show cast shift into the 80's - I love the chemistry between the actors. How could they top Kelso, Jackie, Hyde, Eric, Donna and Fez?!? Not to mention Red and Kitty. :)

Venusian 12-05-01 05:29 PM

but the characters would then be out of high school. i dont think the show follows a timeline. the first few shows used to show the date, but then they jumped forward with the star wars show

Jackskeleton 12-16-01 04:03 AM

that 80's show is just a bad idea..

Mister Beefhead 12-16-01 02:52 PM

The concept of the 80's is just not as funny as the 70's...it just seems kinda sad. Things in the 80's are either funny on their own or can't really be made funny.

Granted, I was 6 by the time that the 80's ended, but I think that The Wedding Singer did a pretty good job of making fun of the 80's (granted, there's a major difference between a 90 minute movie, and an episodic sitcom) I'll give it a chance

Apocrypha 12-16-01 10:40 PM

The ads for this don't look very promising

They certainly don't.

I just hope that if That '80s Show flops, it doesn't bring That '70s Show down with it due to association.

I'll definitely give it a chance, but I don't see it having the dynamic that makes That '70s Show so great.

GatorDeb 12-17-01 02:04 AM

They are not planning on cancelling That 70's Show though, right?

Why would they start in 1977 and not 1971, in case the show took off they had more than a three year run?

Jackskeleton 12-17-01 03:13 AM

You folks realize that a TV show can cover the time span of 3 years extended over the time span of 10 years in television. Look at the simpsons, bart and lisa havn't gotten out of the same grade they have been. sure they are cartoon characters but still.. a tv show can extend the whole time factor so that 70's show has way more then just 3 years to carry on its show.

as for that 80's show.. the thing doesn't look like it will last long

big whoppa 12-23-01 11:39 PM

From the ads, the 80's show is shot differently. Looks more comedy/drama than sitcom like the 70's show. I'd give it a chance. They've got an Asian guy on this show.

I agree that they should transfer the current cast, however, I'm still going to give it a chance!

True, but it becomes a problem when your actors get to the point where they're in their mid-20's, but we're still supposed to believe they're high school kids. At least with animation, the characters always look the same.

I agree... this show looks pretty sucky. The 80s have already been spoofed in so many movies; I haven't seen anything in the commercials all that funny or original.

Gizmo 12-24-01 04:04 PM

I'll watch it... I just hope they didn't sign a deal with Fox saying that if they canceled That 80's Show, they would stop That 70's Show...Kinda like X-files with the Lone Gunmen

Tesiae 12-24-01 04:33 PM

Is it just my ears or did a character in the promo ask, "Hey, is my nose bleeding?" How can they get away with that? Unlike the mostly inoffensive weed smoking on That 70's Show, coke is a hardcore drug.

Different people have different standards of what's offensive. You call jokes about pot "inoffensive" while I don't like them. So, whatever.

Tesiae 12-24-01 05:18 PM

tor_greg: Is it the mission of your life to disagree on everything?

Making jokes about marijuana isn't really bad because it's not a destructive drug. Cocaine is another matter entirely. This show is supposed to be a sitcom in the same vein as That 70's Show and I don't see how you can make light of snorting coke.

While I Agree that tor disagrees with everything ;) I must say that the way they get away with the pot reference in that 70's show is they are (from my memory) never actually smoking it infront of the camera) they are always in the circle going around from the after effects.

Now for the coke reference.. that is a very risky step. because what can you actually say they were doing other then sniffing coke? with the group you could say they were just doing something else and it just refers to the pot/smoking

in either case its a odd middle ground

monkeyboy 12-25-01 04:10 PM

do they actually show a guy sniffing a huge rail, or is it just implied? coke was a big part of the 80's and i don't really see any problem making a joke out of it. some people choose to turn a blind eye to the fact that drugs are a part of our world and will continue to be. with all the blood, guns and violence on tv, a few jokes about coke seem pretty mild to me. if anything, they'll let kids know that doing a lot of coke will make you act stupid and get bloody noses, so where's the harm in that?

in any case, this show looks pretty bad. that 70's show was funny because it didn't seem forced. the 80's show looks like they're trying a little too hard.

tor_greg 12-25-01 11:25 PM

You're right, I'm just another vegan sXe'r who doesn't know anything.

big whoppa 12-26-01 10:26 PM

If there are drugs, adults rather than kids should be the ones using them on the show. And no, I don't advocate pot or coke.

WarriorPrincess 12-28-01 04:06 AM

I've finally seen a few ads for this new show, and I think it looks funny. The dynasty shots especially cracked me up. Oh, and the madonna dancing. :D Looking forward to it starting.

The Antipodean 12-28-01 04:49 PM

Dumb as hell. The '80s weren't particularly cool when I was living in them, the last thing I want to do is watch some crappy sitcom that emphasizes it.

atifman 12-29-01 10:24 AM

i think the reason this show doesn't seem great is because the promo doesn't show any funny well-thought-out jokes. they just seem stupid.

Geofferson 12-31-01 12:00 AM

This sounds like a great premise. I know I'll tune in.
