Just how popular is Dragon Ball Z in North America?!?

I'm referring to the TV series. Is this a popular show in North America? My friend and I were playing hoops the other day. Some African-American guys were playing with us and they started calling my friend, who's Asian, "Kruin" when he pulled off some nice moves! Kruin (sp?) is the monk guy from DBZ. Later they said something like "yea, i'm all charged up now, super saiyin'". And I know of another time where a guy was nicknamed Goku for his skills. So funny!

So is this show a big mainstream hit??

It's shown almost as much as Scooby Doo on Cartoon Network.

My husband loves the show. I've tried to figure out why he likes it, but I just can't get past the huge foreheads and bizarre hairstyles.

It's definately gots its fans but it hasn't really thoroughly broken into the mainstream or been the out and out phenomenon that (say what you will of it) that Pokemon is. That may just be cause its on cable and not network though.

Considering the ratings indicate that at least 2 million people watch it everyday, it's doing very well for a basic cable only series.

The show was a hit in Japan with over 500 episodes and 20 movies, so it's just a matter of time before it's shown on network t.v. and becomes even bigger.

The Toonami programming of teen/older animation cartoons, Batman Beyond, Samurai Jack, Gundam and such, is Cartoon Networks most popular broadcast, and essentailly Dragonball and Dragonball Z are the signature Toonami shows. Cartoon Network has defintely helped its popularity. I've been a long time fan, and I am a regular viewer.

By the way, the name the guys were saying is 'Krillin', my favorite character by the way.

DBZ

Krillin is cool, but kinda on the weak side. Trunks and Picolo are my favorites.

Trunks is da man! I try and watch DB & DBZ every day, although I usually get to see only 2-3 a week - it's a great show and quite a lot of my friends watch it too, so I'd say it's pretty popular.

With people who are my nephew, this is the #1 show of all time. From reading posts here it looks like the show is gaining popularity with people who are in the 'not my nephew' category as well.

It's really freaky for me, because I was REALLY into this show when i was like 16!@$ Back then.. we had to scrounge for episodes, mostly like 8th generation copies from japanese tv, with or without subtitles.. it didn't matter to us, we just wanted to see people beating each other up.. haha..

And now.. 6 years later it's all over the place..

Dragon Ball

I remember first watching the american premiere on syndication, I beleive, when I was in the 6th grade for "Dragon Ball." It was shown around 11:00 AM or so on Sunday mornings in Washington because that is when my dad usually made me turn the channel to watch the New England game. It seemed like they didn't show it long but I loved it while it lasted. Then in 8th grade I went to this cheap clothing place and they had a Dragon Ball Z shirt and it had Goku all grown up and I was shocked and I had to pick it up. I remember I was teased because everyone said I had Dragon Balls. Then I think the Cartoon Network picked Dragon Ball Z in my Junior year and now I am a freshman in College. The Story of my life.
