Dear FOX and Gracie Films,
We, the undersigned, are writing in regards to the release of a Moe's Tavern interior playset in The Simpsons World of Springfield Interactive action figure toy line by Playmates Toys. It has been reported that Playmates was denied the approval to produce this item. We don't know why, but we assume there is some concern over marketing this setting in toy form. We feel this concern is well-intentioned but misguided. As dedicated Simpsons fans and collectors, we believe this product should be released.
Playmates' Simpsons action figures have become a huge success in a short time thanks in large part to demand from adult action figure collectors. Figures geared to adults have been common since the early '90s when such lines as Playmates' Star Trek first became successful. Many toys based on more mature or controversial themes than those represented by Moe's have been produced in recent years. Hasbro sold a "Cantina" bar playset as part of their Star Wars toy line. McFarlane Toys sold a figure posed in an electric chair as well as "dirty" talking Austin Powers figures for exclusive release to collector shops. Companies are gearing action figures to the adult demographic more than ever because it can often make or break a toy line's success.
That being said, we don't believe this toy would be a bad thing for children to be exposed to at all. Displaying the flaws of humanity in a humorous way is what The Simpsons TV series is all about. When the show portrays alcohol consumption it is not to promote it but to sharply criticize it. Playmates' voice chip technology could capture that spirit in Moe's Tavern with quotes like, "Hey, Barney, I think you've had enough," "Give me your keys, you're too drunk to drive," and "My name is Hans. Drinking has ruined my life. I'm 31 years old." The recent Simpsons beer mugs and shot glasses seem much more questionable in terms of influencing children negatively. It doesn't make sense that Simpsons images can appear on a product that is used for alcohol consumption but not on a toy that could actually promote the show's anti-drinking message.
Even though we believe it would be good for children to hear these statements in a toy, nowadays toy companies frequently use more restricted methods of distribution to market a product just to adults. Playmates has already produced items sold exclusively through mail order, collectibles shops, or other specific stores. We would have no objection to them releasing an item like Moe's this way.
Playmates was an excellent choice to be the new manufacturer of Simpsons action figures. They are one of the most experienced, innovative, and informed toy companies around. They would not release a product that would result in negative consequences. Their intention to produce Moe's Tavern only convinces Simpsons fans more that they know exactly what their customers want. We are simply asking that FOX and Gracie Films trust Playmates' judgment. Moe's Tavern, like so many of Playmates' ideas, is absolutely necessary to make sure the terrific World of Springfield action figure series remains the most complete, accurate, and entertaining Simpsons product line on the market.
